We now live in a world where Justin Bieber has released an excellent pop album. I'm as shocked as anyone. The first clue that this might be in the cards was almost 2 years ago when Kanye and RZA demised his song Runaway Love. Then last fall it started coming out that he was working with almost every top flight producer (Timbaland, Kanye, Darkchild). Then "Boyfriend" dropped and it became nearly everyone's guilty pleasure, terrible verses and all. But nothing could have prepared me for the album. It is nearly perfect pop/R&B. The are a bunch of standout tracks (Take You, Thought of You, As Long As You Love Me, She Don't Like The Lights), but the highlight, for me, is the final track of the Deluxe Edition, Maria. It is one of the finest Michael Jackson impressions you will ever hear. From the Tabloid Junkie-esque montage of sound clips from news shows about the woman who claimed he fathered her child, to "leave me alone" appearing in the very first line of the song, and finishing up with a delivery of the line "she's not my girl" so eerily MJ like you may actually think it is the late King of Pop at first blush. The production is Darkchild at his absolute finest, conjuring up some of the same magic he used on the MJ track You Rock My World.

Maria

solid front to back, and even the more mellow tracks (like violet rays) grew on me with subsequent listens

metric - synthetica
pretty good, but wanderlust doesn't belong here!

fiona apple - the idler wheel...
for me, not as good as extroardinary machine, but a few standout tracks (every single night, werewolf)

Not really into the new Twin Shadow. Somehow manages to be way more of a straight up pop record than his first album, while also being way less catchy. It's sort of boring really.

We're even into the same genre right now, are you me?
Think you have me beat as far as diversity goes.

Should pop in to the EDM thread more. Also, the non Pop-GAF Pop-GAF thread could use some updating/additions. Keep trying to bump it and nothing sticks.

Be sure to check that Darling Farah album though, good rec on that one.

Fucking awesome album

Playing this got me through a lot of late night highway drives back in 2008. I hope Billy releases more with this band in the future.

Apparently i'm a year late on this album. Still love it though.

It doesn't matter it's still a great follow up for Florence.

Yeah, it doesn't fit in, but I still appreciate it because it sounds like something A-ha would have made in the 80's.

Paging Des.

They kind of grate me sometimes but there are some ridiculously catchy songs on here.

Anna Sun for the uninitiated. My brother's ex-girlfriend is in the video.

These guys are set to blow up. The next FUN.? Probably.
