What recurring GAF Gaming debate is your favorite?

Gaming Discussion here on GAF is known for a lot of things: breaking news stories, lengthy discussions on shifting trends in game development, nostalgia tripping, critiquing game critics, and other awesome activities that give gaming bloggers something to raid for their own articles. Another thing that GAF is (in)famous for is divisive issues erupting into epic debate threads. Once one of these polarizing subjects plants its seed, the debate takes on an immortal life of its own. Many times, long after the original argument has died down and the thread has receded into the dark depths of pages 5 and up, the item of contention will continue to pop up in discussions across the board.

Still not sure what the hell I mean by "recurring" GAF debates? Allow me to share my personal favorite example:

The 30fps vs 60fps Debate

250px-Fumito_Ueda.jpg
- "So, you see, locked 30fps is truer to the original vision. It's more cinematic."

I first remember noticing the divisiveness on the topic of framerates when Fumito Ueda confirmed that the Ico/SotC Collection would run at a locked 30fps rather than utilizing the more powerful hardware to run it at 60fps. Now that the game has released, we can probably admit that BluePoint games wouldn't have been able to get SotC running at 60fps on the PS3 anyway, but that initial announcement sparked a rather interesting and entertaining debate here on GAF. On one side, you had those who defended the choice, arguing that 30fps lends the games a more filmic look and feel. This, they argued, was much better suited to Fumito's cinematic presentation in both games. Others cried foul, claiming that 60fps is always better in every scenario because it means smoother gameplay and presentation.

Several framerate-related tags later, the debate eventually died down, and the Ico/SotC Collection threads moved on to discussing other aspects of the upcoming game. But the debate wasn't finished. Oh no, it was merely slinking into the shadows, waiting for other opportunities to strike. More than any other debate, the 30fps vs 60fps issue seems to pop up in other completely unrelated discussions time and time again. Every time it happens it cracks me up, because it's just one of those things where you can tell that neither side will ever change its opinion on the matter. Not that I'm saying they should. It's a matter of preference, but a lot of GAFers are obviously passionate about their point-of-view on framerates.

------

So I'll just start us off with that one. There are plenty of other divisive issues that never seem to fully die here in Gaming Discussion. What zombie debate is your favorite?

PC vs consoles is always a lot of fun. Many interesting and new arguments are brought up; we get to see gigantic screenshots from DennisK4 looking at some textures of leaves or some such; generally at the end of the debate both sides come away with a fresh new outlook on the matter.

Japan vs Western games.
This. What I especially like is that there are many ignorant people on both sides ("All western games are dudebros", "Japan only does animu moe ugu"), but those who know a lot and aren't blinded by bias give many interesting insights.

DmC vs DMC

He's the greatest of them all.

I can understand the 30FPS thing in the HD remasters. There's an interview with the studio that does them in this month's Edge, and it sounds like bloody hard work in some cases, getting games tailored to work on the PS2 over onto the PS3, these games having been developed by different studios with different ways of working.

If console gamers had been use to 60FPS like PC gamers then playing 30FPS games generally feels pretty bad and kind of janky. There is no "filmic quality" about 30FPS, its just half the framerate. It is less responsive and less fluid.

I'll pitch in the PC vs. Console debate.

wow... Games Journalism? PSN Sharing? Renting/buying Used games vs. supporting Dev's...

They are all great and keep me entertained at work when I can't play games!

30fps vs 60fps
Comfy Couch

Because if someone thinks 30 > 60, or you can't PC game on your sofa with a controller by only plugging in one lead, you know they're spastics to avoid.

All of them. But my favorites are the Game Vs Game ones where people haven't even the remotest idea of the other game, they are just blinding defending one.

Review scores - Its ironic and almost fun to watch people who appose and don't care about review scores moan and bitch about review scores.

Game Journalism - Move on already people.

Oh god, I hate them all, haha.

If I had to pick, though, it'd be the legitimacy of buying used. Some equate it with piracy, some are just like  and buy themselves a stack of cheap games.

I enjoy following the photo-realism vs art style debates, prevalent in the GT5 vs Forza 4 thread, and to a lesser extent in graphics threads involving Crysis

all games should be open world, other types of games are out of date

i prefer the x controller, the y controller is the worst

not so much enjoy, just cant help myself

A fine example of a shallow and pathetic debate.
No, it's not. If people have both systems, as thousands of GAFfers do, and only want the better version regardless of friends lists or controllers, which many of them do, they're perfectly valid.

However, the one I hate the most is fanboy system war crap. Never understood loyalties. I guess I'm lucky because growing up I had every system and it didn't matter what I used to play on.

But seriously, that shit is sickening and very immaturish. Unless you are a major stockholder, why would you even argue about it. I can't stomach going into the sales-age threads. I usually just hop in and see how the software sold and hop back out. There is nothing more annoying that people defending their purchaces of a system by bickering with others. Fuck, I don't even look at my console when the game is on... just at my TV or monitor. Do . Not. Care. for that shit.

and we're right around the corner with it starting all over with next box, ps4, wiiU ugh.

Dubs vs Subs (in JRPGS mainly, but other cases too), points by both sides are valid, but these debates sometimes get quite heated.

Also, unrelated: Perhaps in more specific cases, sprites vs 3d models.

EDIT: I remember a thread around somebody playing Uncharted 1 or 2 in some latin American region being dubbed, and that thread got a bit violent.
