What should be the maximum time between saves?

My sister was playing Star Wars Battlefront 2 on the PS2 recently and she said that the last mission lasted something like an hour and you couldn't save properly in that time. Once she had died the requisite number of times she had to start again. The length between saves became something I though about since Dragon Age 2 after it took like half an hour to defeat a dragon. It wasn't interesting just annoying and I was concerned that I might become complacent and get killed only having to start all over again.

In general I would prefer the games gameplay to be harder but allow you to keep having a go at the same part rather than going back for thirty minutes of gameplay only for you to have one go and die at the hard bit. I haven't tested it but it seems like 10 mins max between saves would probably the limit in my view. Longer than that I lose motivation to have another go.

What think ye all?

Games should only save when you die or when you beat them.

I save whenever I can.

Like with new RE games I save basically every time I walk past a typewriter. I also anxiety save every time I save before quitting aka I save twice in a row so my brain is sure I actually saved.

I hate that games dictate my playtime. It's like comparing normal TV Vs. Netflix, Prime, whatever. I prefer streaming platforms because I can stop watching and resume it when I want, not when the TV show wants. So, for the same reason, I prefer consoles over PC because all of them have a Quick resume function for at least one game. So I can approach my playtime in same way I consume TV or cinema: being the owner of my time.

Zero seconds - There's no reason I shouldn't be able to instantly start at any point I left off

Plus I should be able to manually save at any time, and on different profiles

This! This right here!!!

God bless the X Box quick resume feature. It doesn't get nearly as much love as it should for how revolutionary it is.

If you don't let me save when I want to, outside of battle or major events, then you are an asshole. Shit happens in life and I shouldn't have to leave the game on for hours because I can't save if I have something come up with my kids/wife/dogs/friends/whatever.

Definitely not before a huge-ass unskipabble cutscene!

But seriously, saves should be done every time you enter a new area.

With the power of the PS5 ssd the time between saves will be so short that you'll be transported into the future every time you die

Whenever I press start - options - save game. Or start - exit "do you want to save?".

I paid for the funking game. I choose how much time I have spare to play. It ain't playing me!

Let me save when and where I want even in a cut scene. Even though I do appreciate what Dark Souls did for gaming.

Based on some of the replies here, you guys might get annoyed with SMT Nocturne.

Depends on the game.

Games that are well tuned where the gameplay is the focus the checkpoints should have some level of punishment as it's what makes the challenge exciting. Even if something is extremely hard if you can just save scum it there is no feeling of accomplishment or adrenaline.

Games where the gameplay is the padding saving should be at the discretion of the player like elder scrolls type games.

Every 500 milliseconds. Aww, you made an error and can't go back because the save system is so fast and frequent? Fuck you.
Every 500ms with overwrite but keep one for every hour up to say 10 saves?

I mean I've never had a problem with saves ever (except Doom 3 where I saved with low health and die just after load and didn't complete the game because of it) they are usually checkpoint/location based now anyway rather than time.

Do people who think you should be able to save anywhere think you should be able to save mid battle?
Yes. I would have like it is on emulators, where you can hit a button and it creates a save 'snapshot' of that exact moment, hit another button and it loads that same exact moment.

And remember though, just because you saved mid battle, doesn't mean there aren't checkpoints, or manual saves earlier etc.

Depends on the context. Modded Skyrim, where a crash could be at any moment? I'm saving every room and wishing I saved more often.

Resident Evil? I'm fine with how the 2/3 Remakes did it: checkpoints and automatic saves on normal difficulties, classic manual ink ribbon saves for higher difficulties.

25-30 mins

If it's a short game, no saves at all

3 unfortunately didn't have ink ribbons, even on hardcore.

Really wish Village had some sort of limited save function. But hey, the game's still amazing as is.

every game should allow for save anywhere. If people savescum then so what? let them play how they want to play.

I had a feeling it didn't. Shows how memorable it was.
