What should I buy for a 10yo a Ps3 or Ps4 or Wii U ?

Wii U or PS3. both have their advantages and disadvantages. The WiiU has Nintendo games. The PS3 has a large library of games that can be purchased for cheap. The PS4 is a few years before it will be relevant to a 10 y/o, i.e. appropriate games.

Totally right.

Wrong where? I don't see kids frothing at the mouth for DK:TF anywhere. Do you?
I see these kids lined up with parents at midnight launches of Modern Warfare 3.

I see them fighting each other to play it at my store, yes. They run to Skylanders, they run to Super Mario 3D World, and to Donkey Kong Country. I just had a parent return today in fact, to thank me for the recommendation of Wii U over PS4. Her kids loved it. I have too many returning PS4-customers asking for when more kids games will arrive to not try and explain that difference before each sale.

A few kids in line for Call of Duty doesn't mean that OTHER kids don't like to play quality kids games. Gamer parents and older siblings influence kids of a far too young age to play 18/M-rated games, nothing's more sad than a 12 year old refusing to play anything that's not 18/M. Let kids stay kids for as long as possible. It's not bad for a 10 year old to enjoy a Mario or Donkey Kong game.

so why isn't the wii u selling ?

That doesn't mean it's right that they should be playing Modern Warfare 3 or that it should be pushed on a ten year old right away. I'm not saying the parents should default to DK but I wouldn't praise a parent buying MW for their kid.

Based on experience with my daughter and her friends, you could buy a ghetto PC, buy Minecraft for $20, and call it a day. It could literally boot directly into Minecraft, allowing nothing else to be executed, and the kid will be entertained for a year.

edit: I can't believe some people are suggesting Modern Warfare for a ten-year-old, or that normal ten-year-olds are "lining up" to buy it.

It's obvious a lot of these posters don't know any 10 year olds. I work in an elementary school and kids don't care about COD. They like Nintendo, Minecraft, Angry Birds. They don't care about Sony or Second Son.

Some of you are completely clueless and will be the types of parents I shake my head at on a daily basis.

Straight-up PS3. Minecraft, Ratchet & Clank, "T-Rated" Uncharted games, Skylanders, a strong backlog and moderate software support moving forward, and just as importantly: cheaper. Cool/weird downloadable games.

Im calling bs on this.

Im calling bs on this.

Calling BS on what? Sony and COD? The kids at my school don't care about either. They're elementary school kids, the exact age of the OPs brother. I'm sorry not everyone is a Sony fanboy, but Sony just doesn't make a dent with kids. I've never heard a kid talk about Sackboy like they do Angry Birds, Mario, or even Donkey Kong. They don't know Ratchet and Clank, it's just not a thing. Get over it.

On COD, I think it depends on the community and types of kids other kids hang around. But elementary school aged? Nah, the kids at my school don't care. COD is terrible anyway, there are better shooters out there.

Are you seriously trying to tell me kids don't care about playstation or cod ? c'mon man

And kids don't know ratchet and clank ?

You said in this thread you don't even know, man. I know FIRST HAND experience. I heard more about Xbox One than PS4 during the launches in November. Not that I care for Xbox One, but the thing is... more kids are into Xbox and Nintendo.

You can call BS on what I have to say, but the fact is I have first hand experience and people on GAF know me personally and can vouch for my shit.

Not only do they not know about Ratchet and Clank, but most of them have no clue who Sly Cooper and Jak and Daxter are. Why are you so surprised about this?

Pretty much. I always see kids take their parents to the Nintendo section at stores.

Besides all that, Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. will keep most people busy for years until they want the newest one that is.

WiiU

I'm getting married in July and my fiance is already talking about kids. All I know is that you want to give your kids zero chance of playing a FPS till they're older. The WiiU has zero chance of ever getting a big FPS franchise (beyond the early gen ports). Perfect.

Yeah the experince is real. Seriously the kids around my area have always been more into Xbox. Nintendo for Smash and stuff and just didnt care about Ratchet and clank. I STILL stand by that COD shouldnt be celebrated as a "choice" for a ten year old.

I think he's calling bs on that you make it sound not a single kid likes cod. Kids in general? Sure, but the average kid prolly doesn't take gaming seriously.

A lot of my extended family and their friends are gamers through and through and like games of all kinds.

Makes me think of the mascot thread we had earlier. Of course most kids know Mario, Nintendo, Angry Birds, even if they don't play the games.

From my personal experience, kids also seem to like xbox more than ps3.

why isn't the wiiu selling if all these kids care about is nintendo ? since all these kids don't care about playstation.

I find more kids have a 3DS than a Wii U at my school and currently, you can get a better Nintendo experience on the 3DS for less than a Wii U. I know a good handfull of kids that do have a Wii U and they seem to be well aware of the games coming out. I just had a conversation about Donkey Kong and how I myself was going to be purchasing it this weekend. Wii U is a hard sell because of marketing issues and the way Nintendo handled the end of the life cycle with the Wii. It's not because the lack of quality software that would appeal to kids.

PlayStation 4... no question.

You have NOW some games for kids like:

* Skylanders: Swap Force
* Rayman Legends (awesome)
* LEGO The Movie
* LEGO Marvel
* Knack

And others enjoyable for kids like:
* Escape Plan
* Flower
* Tiny Brains
* Trine 2
* Sound Shapes

And other my son (12 years old) enjoyed:
* Don't Starve
* Strider

And there is A LOT of games announced for the machine your brother will enjoy now and in the next years...

Agreed...my 5 and 7 year olds love skylamders,and don't starve. Oddly the older one doesn't like strider much, but the little one loves it. They'll get the Lego games when they go on sale as well...I'm not a fan of the new way they do split screen.

Once minecraft gets it's ass to the ps4 I can retire the 360.

Isn't it obvious? Kids don't know what the heck a Wii U is. I have over 10 nephews and nieces and they all have 3DS's but none of them don't even know what a Wii U is nor do their parents. I'd can pretty much guarantee the situation is similar elsewhere.

Also it's true about preteens not being into Playstation, majority of Playstations sales come from males aged over 13. I remember reading an article about this topic a while back but can't remember where.

I have a kid who is almost 10, and am familiar with his tastes and those of his little buddies. So, FWIW:

Nintendo is dead. Waste of money. He has one friend with a Wii U and it's a dust magnet. We used to have a Wii U and sold it.

Minecraft is king. Get the PS3 or 360 if you gotta have it now, or PS4 if he's patient and can deal with Skylanders/Lego games for now.

The discussion is over, OP purchased a PS3, which is an excellent choise because it is inexpensive, has an extensive library, is currently still being supported and has free online gaming, has a Blu Ray drive that can also be used to watch movies, and unlike 360 (which is relatively dead as far as new releases are concerned) doesn't put any online aps behind a paywall.

I'd love to recommend a PS4, but I'll go with PS3, and these titles:

Minecraft
Skylanders since those are ones he likes already.

Sly HD Collection
Sly Thieves in Time
Ratchet HD Collection
Ratchet Tools of Destruction
Ratchet A Crack in Time
Jak HD Collection
InFAMOUS Collection - caveat; Teen rated, but the story is tame as far a language. No sexual stuff that I can recall, and it's a fun playground for superpowers.

LittleBigPlanet 1 & 2

PS+ goes without saying.

That's a killer frigging starter kit for a 10 year old. I'd have loved my brother to death if I was hooked up with those titles.

The good news is most of those can be had for less than $30. I highly recommend the Sly and Ratchet collections if you can't swing all of them.

As much as I'd love to say Wii U, I'm going to tell you to get him a PS4. Why? Because he won't be 10 forever and most of the (third party) games he be interested in a few years will be available on PS4 but more than likely not the Wii U.

Exactly what I would say.

When I was 10, I wanted the newest, most powerful system that all of the older kids were playing. If you got an SNES when the N64 came out, you were a chump. Getting an NES in 1992 meant you had missed the bandwagon. Maybe the WiiU or the PS3 are more practical choices, with larger libraries and more kid-friendly games, but if 10-year-olds are anything like I remember them, a PS4 would be more appreciated, both now and in the future.

Easy, PS3.

More game, cheaper games, same graphics, cheaper price, etc. Kids don't care about Mario.

Are you seriously trying to tell me kids don't care about playstation or cod ? c'mon man

While I completely disagree that playstation or Cod aren't relevent to kids, they are, Ratchet and Clank may as well not exist to them.

PS3 is great but it's in its last years. Wii U has some cool games but it's struggling so much I don't know how much life it has left. PS4 is more future proof but the current lineup is extremely light on content.

I don't know, toss a 3 sided coin.

edit: i guess PS3 seems like the best option if not just for Minecraft.

OP consider that a 10 year old will not know the difference in power with PS3 vs PS4...it really is a no brainer man...the PS3 has such a HUGE library...7 years worth of AAA games vs PS4 that literally came out weeks ago. Then the cost factor...the COST FACTOR...kids will be kids and discs will be scratched ..but even so, the price of used games make it so much more worth it for a 10 year old to go with PS3.

I guess Snake Eater, GTA:SA, and FEAR weren't violent or included adult subject matters.
If you go back another 10 years most of the M rated games were fairly tame compared to those, and even those may arguably be tame compared to the current ones, certainly GTAIII wasn't that big of a deal while GTA:SA went further, then GTAV went yet further.

Still, we do have some fairly soft M rated games, so it's definitely case by case, and with ESRB descriptors and Youtube there's no lack of resources to check things out for yourself.

This BS is about to change now that PS4 is ahead in US. It will be more even unlike the lopsided last gen.

You're probably underestimating a 10 year old there, at the least I figure one could understand the power difference even if they may not be as clear on PS4 vs XB1 or know the technical reasons why (hell, I doubt most of us fully understand those anyway.)

I'd go for the PS3. Has plenty of kiddie games for the short term for him to play now. Then he can break into the more mature stuff when he gets into his teens.

The PS4 doesn't have a substantial library for any age atm.....let alone a 10 yr old.

impress him. buy the ps4.

Impress with what? A 10 year old who's used to Wii and Android games does not see the difference between the PS3 and PS4 version of SwapForce. People are seriously recommending PS4 based on own personal taste, and ignoring the much larger kids library for Wii U? A 10 year old is 10 years old, and won't turn 14 over night. Recommend games that's right for him NOW, not in 2, 3, 4 years.. Don't recommend PS4 "because some kids his age play COD, he will want to as well"... GAF, you disappoint me.
