What should I pick ? PS Vita or Wii U ?

The Wii U has the best games out now on any current gen system and that may not even change come next year even with Uncharted, MGS, Bloodborne, etc since the system is already stacked with so many good exclusives (Pikmin, SSB, MK, Bayonetta, Toad, 3D World, Monster Hunter, W101, DK: Tropical Freeze, Luigi U) and will have plenty more exclusives next year (Zelda, Star Fox, Yoshi, Kirby, Xenoblade, Splatoon).

The Vita is the definition of a niche console. Most of the good games can be found on the PS3 in some form and the exclusives (a lot of ports/spin offs) don't warrant the purchase of the console imo. Indies aren't my idea of a good time but if that's your thing you can always play those on a PC.

I think its better to get a Wii U asap, because if Pikmin 3 is a hint of things to come, you really wouldn't want to wait out too long to buy Wii U games. Many of them wont be restocked once they are sold out on retails.

Similarly, the Vita doesn't have a future even if you don't factor in the 3DS or the smartphones, while Nintendo is pumping out GOTY quality exclusive games for the Wii U.

Not to mention that most of Vita's indies can be played on other consoles too

If anything I expect the wii u's support to die off faster than Vita's. Once there's a new Nintendo console Nintendo will be gone, and that's really the only game in town. If you're interested in a Vita it's probably for the indie and japanese games and those will keep coming for years.

nintendo will probably drop support in 2016, but sony's already positioned the vita as 'ps4 peripheral.' the difference being, nintendo will give the wii u a higher profile until its demise, which should attract indie games as it has done so far. the vita on the other hand will basically get downports from ps4 games (especially on the japanese side of things). 2015 is sort of a last hurrah for both systems, but the wii u's will be a lot louder.

this is from an american perspective.

Except that by buying a Vita, you get the PS1 and PSP collection of games. If you have a PS3, then you can transfer pretty much an unrestricted number of PS1/PSP games to your Vita. I shouldn't have to mention how huge the library of JRPGs on the PS1 is.

Grandia and Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky look great on the Vita's screen. Also, SUIKODEN 2 is on PSN now.

Well, if you buying a Wii U, you are getting every Nintendo home console since NES, with the exception of GameCube (at least if we are talking only about official methods and catalogues), as well as GBA games and, in the future, DS ones. Of course there are not so many JRPGs as on PS Vita with BC, but Nintendo library does have its quality JRPG titles, and, as far as I see an evolution of a handheld Wii U Virtual Console selection, things will definitely be better. I have very high hopes for DS VC, and GBA VC already achieved my expectations.

I recently bought a Vita because of the amazon.de deal (99€). Got a Wii U since early this year.

I'm glad I didn't pay more for the vita. So far the experience is mediocre at best, Wii U on the other hand delivers must have titles on a monthly basis.

Easy decision: Wii U

Sony is already done making any exclusives/AAA for it.

Nintendo is still going, with a good schedule ready for 2015.

Go for a Wii U OP. Vita 2nd.

RER 2 is coming to the Vita and not WiiU and that is a AAA game. Vita has more games coming for it, and Nintendo most likely to launch new console 2016. Vita will last longer especially when it is getting Japanese of which plenty of getting localized, and indie support.

Lol ok.

Besides if one wants JRPG the Vita is a no brainer.

At first I want to purchase a Wii U because I want to play Zelda, Smash, Xenoblade X, Bayonetta and Mario Cart but I do not if I will like Nintendo game or not. Actually, my last Mario that I have played is Super Mario Bros on Famicom when I was very young. Anyway, I really want to play Smash and Mario cart but I have no one to play with. Those games seem like a super fun family/party games but I do not know many one who have Wii U and play those games.

When I cannot find someone with Wii U to play with I think about PS vita. I'm a fan of novel game and (old)JRPG. I think PS vita is a good choice for that. I have a lot of unfinished JRPG on PSP and I want to play it again on PS vita. I also want to try Danganronpa(I like this kind of game very much.). However, PS Vita's future seem so dark for me.

Definitely, I will buy both of them in the future but what should I pick first ?

Vita is dead in the water, has been for a bunch of years. The Wii U at least is heavily supported by Nintendo.

Bayonetta and Mario 3D World are totally fine as single player games, you don't need a friend to enjoy them. Smash and Mario Kart have a solid online component, we also have tournaments and events for GAF members in both games.

The WiiU is as dead as the Vita, and the Vita is getting more games than the WiiU, both Japanese and indies. And Sony still releases games for the Vita, like the recent release of Freedom wars.

No it does not, not by a long shot.

The Vita is the definition of a JRPG machine, which the what the op was asking for. Not to mention that it plays PSP and PS1 JRPG.

The Vita is the console to get and it´s not even close.

Do you have PS3 a PS4 or PS+ if so... if you have all that great PS+ Vita backlog I'll say a Vita... if not... just buy a WiiU and think of getting also a PS+ subscription just to start getting a Vita backlog for when you buy it.

Huh.
News to me.
I have like 10 Vita games in my backlog, and I think I averaged out like buying 1 game per month this year.
I had to decrease my buying habit this year because the Vita backlog was growing faster than I can play these games.
All the Q3-4 2014 games are being pushed to Q2 2015 on my play-list. I still have a lot of stuff in the seal...I know, waste of money as a Day 1 buyer =(.
Too many games, too little time.
By the time the Vita is actually "dead", I think the system will last me through 2017 since 2015 is also a big year for the Vita.

Buy both if you can.

If you have to choose, Wii U. It's pretty clear cut for me. Besides you have like 5 games you named for Wii U and your main reason for Vita as pile up unfinished jrpg isn't really convincing.

Thank you, I have read every comment and it is still a hard decision.

Ones can consider a system as dead when they have no interesting game on that system but both Vita and WiiU are quite alive for me :/

However, all of you are very helpful. I have many more things to add in my consideration.

I kind of see the Wii U's handling of all digital titles (VC included) as taking a gamble with Lady Luck, and Lady Luck can and is often quite the bitch. >_>

WiiU lacks third party support its catalogue and good games are mostly Nintendo first party games. you should consider what do you want to play.WiiU has indies also but i can asure you the indie console for excellence is Vita. Most of the games play great with thos controls.

Also Vita has many platforms it covers for example : Psone games, PSP games, PSN cross platform games, PSN vita native games,PSM , PS3 and PS2 using PSNow. If you have PS4 it is the perfect complement to that. Also it has bunch of good exclusives yet like: Uncharted GA, Little big Planet Vita, Murasaki Baby, Muramasa Rebirth, Gravity rush, Freedom Wars, Soul Sacrifice Delta, , Demon Gaze, Senran Kagura Shinovi vs, Danganronpa 1 and 2, Persona 4 Golden etc.

You should think what do you want to play and if its in a portable way that you wanted to.

I vote for vita , just a few days with it and you will love it. But wii U is not a bad console , before WiiU i much prefer 3ds it has a much better catalogue than wii U.

Own both and meh, none is better than the other. Both mediocre really.

Just see if you really want a home console or a handheld device.

Resident Evil Revelations 2 looks like a disaster in the making and I loved Resident Evil Revelations.

Price wise, get a Vita. Wii U still has some room to go down in price.

If you're into novels and JRPGs, it's not even a contest as Wii U has pretty much none of these right now. Look for a Vita deal now, grab a WiiU for Xenoblade or Zelda next year.

In that case, absolutely pick up the Vita. I have both (Vita / Wii U) and the only reason why I bought the Wii U is out of nostalgia and to play Zelda next year. I love JRPGs and Japanese games in general, so I play quite a lot on my Vita. (and recently on my PSP as well)

I'd say go for the Vita, (maybe) pick up the Wii U later once Zelda is out...

Owning both I would recommend you to buy the Vita first since its library already has a lot of games you'll most likely want to play if you like JRPGs and Japanese games in general. It has a lot of third party support in this regard.
I waited to buy my WiiU until it finally started to get the games I was looking forward to and I would advise you to do the same (unless you find a very good deal). Specially because there's a lot of spacing between new releases.

or get it now and play windwaker HD

to be fair.. the wii u has a lot of games at this point as well (Nintendoland, Mario 3D Land, NSMBU, Donkey Kong TF, Mario Kart 8, Smash, ZombiU, Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3, W101, Toad, Zelda WWHD, Hyrule Warriors, Monster hunter 3 Ultimate, Lego City Stories).

As an owner of both, I dont think the Vita has as much exclusive content at this point. For 2015 its really no contest (Splatoon, Yarn Yoshi, Kirby, Zelda, Xenoblade X, Fire Emblem X SMT, Mario Maker).

I have all the consoles I sold my vita the other month. As most of what I want to play is also available on the ps4. Indie wise anyway. Wii u is the best console by far game quality wise. Pure enjoyment that reminds me why I started playing games all those many years ago in the first place. A nice break from the dark serious tone most games seem to want to have this days. Art styles also make up for the technical aspect. Most available games from.Nintendo really dont age unlike everything else that seems to be dated as soon as a sequel comes out.

Do it, get both. That way you know you wont be disappointed.

Those games seem like a super fun family/party games but I do not know many one who have Wii U and play those games.

Online or well, play with them on yours. There is not really a need for them to have it.

Anyway, since you will pick both, Vita. Its cheap and disappears from retail.

This is why you should actually read the OP and never reply to thread titles alone.

If he waits long enough to get both, one of the two items should go on sale, games will more than likely be cheaper on the vita side(Since nintendo games and sales hardly happen early in the year) and have you not seen the face of someone who got 2 consoles before? But if he has to get one first, i'd say PSV since its more likely if he wants an jrpg fix that'd be the place. PS OP do NOT GET A VITA TV(i love mine but the use of it is very very very limited and i'd only get it if you had the vita itself)
Also, wow you single me out and yet have nothing to contribute to the thread but say" READ OP" you must live an exciting life.

It's pretty hard to compare a handheld console with a home console. I wouldn't get either just looking at technical specs (why would anyone do this) but rather see the games available.

Wii U has some of the best games available released during past two years. And they are mostly exclusive games. But if you are not into Nintendo games, then I can see there's not much to look into.

Where Wii U library is lacking is sports games and realistic driving games (basically yearly EA rehashes) but shines with platformers, action/adventure games and fighting games (motherfucking Smash Bros). And there's also Mario Kart 8 for not so realistic but very fun driving games. I could make a list of 10 must have Wii U games here, but list wars are not necessary.

If you do not have friends to play local multiplayer then there's active GAF groups at least in Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros for online multiplayer.

This is btw my biased opinion as a Wii U owner. Such a great console.

tl;dr: Pick the one that has more games that interest you.

OP, you're a fan of JRPGs and novels. If you had highlighted other genres, I might say to get a Wii U. But for JRPGs? Then PS Vita is your system. You have the backcatalog of PSP, PSOne, PS Vita games. On top of that, if it gets cheaper, you'll also have the PS3 and PS4 JRPG catalog via PS Now. It's really the device for JRPGs, and I know that's what I certainly use it for!

Can't really recommend one or the other really.

WiiU has some of the best, most polished, universally loved games of the last 2 years (and you can throw in the best Wii games on top), many of which are singleplayer. But if you turn out to be one of those very few people who just don't like Nintendo games, you're burning your money.

Vita on the other hand has a never-ending bright future if you only want jrpgs, indies, and ps1/psp clasics. If you're really only look at the Vita for that, there's no real downside.

Edit: Misread the post. OP, get a WiiU and PS+

I'd say get a Vita now, get through all of those long JRPGs and VNs, and by the time you're done, the WiiU will have dropped in price and Xenoblade and Zelda might be out.

well arguably WiiU has a 2015 exclusive library. Vita doesnt unless you live in Japan (is Saga and Phantasy Star announced for the west btw?).
Vita doesn't have exclusives? I guess I won't be able to buy HtoL#NiQ, Severed, Persona 4: Dancing All Night, Atelier Ayesha Plus, Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth and Oreshika (to be fair, could move to 2016).
JK, those are 2015 titles.
Everyone knows the system doesn't have the heavy "named" first-party lineup of the Wii U, but it has exclusives even outside of Japan. And on top of that, I expect things to get localization announcements like Danganronpa: Another Episode, Soul Saga, Corpse Party: Blood Drive, IA/VT, Digimon Cyber Sleuth, Atelier Escha and Logy and SAO (whatever the new one is called) just off the top of my head

Buy a WiiU if you buy games day one. Nintendo games can be a pita to find once they are sold out in retail. Vita games are preserved in PSN for a long time. You can buy Vita games every time they are on sale in PSN. You need a WiiU to buy WiiU games in eshop if you're not a US citizen.

Get a WiiiU.

If you expect a localization for Digimon cyber sleuth I'd like whatever you're smoking.

Vita. Too many great cross buy promos to ignore. And if you're already entrenched in the network then you might have games already.

WiiU wilkbe cheaper too, if you wait.

Personally I think the Wii U is a better choice, but if you love visual novels and JRPGs then you'll definitely dig Vita, since the only future it has is in those genres (and indie ports).

Top Bottom
