I think you're supposed to come back regularly and check what's going on. And on the greater picture...Facebook is afraid of Snapchat, it's stealing their users.

WhatsApp I dislike because of its subtle, secret links to Facebook (if you add a contact on your phone, they will pop-up on the Facebook 'Find Friends' feed, regardless of whether you have shared contacts or not)

Ah that's sad. WhatsApp serves as a professional communication tool everywhere having replaced BB messenger after bringing in encryption.Trying hard to make it appeal to everyone and forcing redundant features will cause it fail.

Kinda liked when Instagram did it because some of my friends make amusing updates and I never used Snapchat. WhatsApp getting this feature will just fragment things for me.

I also need to mention that WhatsApp's web solution is garbage. Wish they'd make a proper client like Kakao, or at lest not have the need to keep a connection to the phone.

Hey, it's true. I don't have my status anymore. They removed my Inside Out quote, that's horrible :'(

I just checked, and the options to prevent auto-download of media are still there, under the "Data usage" section of the Settings menu.

Hell, to this day I still have no idea what Snapchat is supposed to be. Whatsapp is a messaging app, not a social network, so why would it need a status feed? It makes no sense, that's not this app's purpose.

Us Android plebs got v2.17.79 with the UI change two days ago, Apple might just take longer than Google to approve the new version.

The stuff is already included in the app, it is pushed live to you without an app update. I had no iOS app update for WhatsApp and it started to show up 2 days after their launch date.

I ended up changing to Discord to chat to some of my friends. I think thats pretty solid and the synchronization is spot on between clients.

Now I only ever use whatsapp to chat to family and a few friends who don't know what Discord is or won't ever use it.

It's not being sent to anyone. Everyone has the new Status tab they can browse (like the facebook news feed or twitter feed). You can specify who sees your status update via your privacy settings.
It's my contacts by default -> people you have in your contact list can see it (and they, in return, probably need to have you added as well to see you in the status tab).

I use Wechat too. The only complaint I've heard is that it's not secure, in that the Chinese government can spy on your chats.
