He puts fresh material out there night after night you jaded ****s! Conan wishes he could just suck the sweat of his taint to get the fraction of the talent Leno posesses!

did you know Bill Clinton got a blowjob?

The Illusionist looks like crap compared to The Prestige. I just hope it doesn't affect The Prestige's chance at success.

leno is pretty awesome, despite not being funny in any way
Yeah, actually; the Tonight Show is terrible, but I like Leno and he's great in interviews.

The Illusionist (2006)
Director Neil Burger's screen adaptation of Steven Millhauser's short story 'Eisenheim the Illusionist'. Eisenheim (Edward Norton) is a magician in early 1900's Vienna, who falls in love with a woman well above his social standing. When she becomes engaged to a Crown Prince, Eisenheim uses his powers to win her back and undermine the stability of the royal house of Vienna.
(with Jessica Biel, Paul Giamatti)

I have high hopes for this, after reading jonathan strange and mr norrel and watching carnivale I really really really want to see a movie about magic.

To put this back on-topic...

I'm not surprised to hear Edward Norton's an asshole. The guy seems very demanding and a bit of a perfectionist. I remember there was this whole drama back when The Italian Job remake was being made, he didn't want to be in it, but he had to because he had a contract with the studio (Paramount?). He made a big stink about it. Not to mention the whole thing with his getting into the editing room in American History X to give himself more screen time.

That said, the guy is a hell of an actor. American History X, 25th Hour, Primal Fear - these are amazing performances. Hell, the work he did on The Score was great, and the movie itself had a very neat heist sequence at the end, and that's what counts in that genre (see Rififi for one of the best heist sequences ever).

wow i did not know that the leaper king in kindome of heaven was played by edward norton, his voice was even diffrent!

All throughout the film I could swear he was trying to do a Brando accent.

Is there anywhere I can read more about the whole American History X editing scandal? I know Tony Kaye tried to get his name taken off the movie because of the editing done to it. It's such an amazing movie, I'm curious as to how different the final product was from Kaye's original vision and what exactly Norton changed and how he did it.

Well, here's his upcoming slate:

Down in the Valley (2005)
Set in the present-day San Fernando Valley, the project revolves around a delusional man who believes he's a cowboy and the relationship that he starts with a rebellious young woman.
(with Evan Rachel Wood, Bruce Dern, David Morse, Rory Culkin)

The Illusionist (2006)
Director Neil Burger's screen adaptation of Steven Millhauser's short story 'Eisenheim the Illusionist'. Eisenheim (Edward Norton) is a magician in early 1900's Vienna, who falls in love with a woman well above his social standing. (with Jessica Biel, Paul Giamatti)

The Painted Veil (2006)
A woman becomes dissatisfied with her marriage, as her husband favors of his research over time with her. An affair leads her on a journey of self-discovery, and her new dedication to fighting cholera brings her to the Far East.
(with Naomi Watts)

Motherless Brooklyn (2006)
"Motherless Brooklyn" is about Lionel Essrog, a detective with Tourette's Syndrome. When his mentor is murdered, he must go and find the killer.
(Norton is directing and adapting the novel)

I like Norton, but he seems to play the same kind of guy in most of his well-known stuff: the harmless-looking white guy with a chip on his shoulder or truly disturbed on the inside.

Looks like the trend may continue here.

There's a documentary on Alan Smithee (the fake director name that directors who feel their work has been compromised use) that deals extensively with the whole American History X scandal. The documentary is titled 'Who is Alan Smithee?' and is available on DVD.

I'll summarize from what I remember...basically, Tony Kaye was taking way, WAY too long with the film - he was demanding final cut of the film (something that's given only to a select few veteran directors, and certainly not to someone as untested as Kaye), he wanted to go back and re-shoot, he kept editing and editing with no end in sight...at one point the studio requested a meeting and as a joke he brought along a buddhist monk, a rabbi, and a priest (or some other combination of spiritual counsel), which pissed the suits off to no end.

The studio proceeded to allow Norton into the editing room to mess around with the film, which is pretty much unheard of and which really REALLY pissed off Kaye. He made a big stink about it and then asked to have his name taken off the movie - but since he had made his grievances with the studio so public, he wasn't allowed to use a pseudonym and the movie ended up being released under his name.

Kaye claims that part of it was the studio and part of it was Norton backstabbing him, because he was unhappy that Kaye had decided to cut a LOT of Norton's scenes out and focus more on the Furlong character.

Whytemyke you obviously haven't seen many films with DeNiro. Go watch The King of Comedy, Mean Streets, Once Upon a Time in America, and Raging Bull. All very different.

Deniro now is just taking roles that are easy. Sadly.

Hell, he's not even playing the same roles in the three examples provided. DeNiro's characters in Heat, Casino, and Meet the Parents aren't even similar. He should've said Casino, Goodfellas, and Analyze This, and he'd still be wrong.

Once you start throwing in the stuff you listed along with Midnight Run, The Deer Hunter, and Taxi Driver (especially the last two), the original point goes out the window.

edit: Just had to say that, hope I'm not derailing page 2.

editx2: Oh hey, don't forget Backdraft, Cape Fear, A Bronx Tale, Wag the Dog, Awakenings, the Mission, and Brazil. How the **** could anyone call him narrow?

You could rent the "Who is Alan Smithee?" documentary http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0279641/ . It details a lot of the shennanigans that went on in the production of AHX.

edit: aw snap I should've read the rest of the thread. :P

Anyway, what Tony Kaye did was really ****ing stupid, he pretty much got himself blacklisted in Hollywood. Too bad cause AHX is a really freaking good movie. I believe he wanted his pseudonym in the movie be "Humpty Dumpty", haha.

The prestige and the illusionist have both sated my demand for magic movies. They both look ****ing awesome.

Sorry to bring up such an old thread, but what the hell is the deal with Norton? Gives two of the best performances I have ever seen in both Fight Club and (especially) American History X, but other than that his films seem mostly 'meh', not to mention he seems to have a really low turn over of films.

Seems like a real wasted talent to me, shame.

He was in an episode of Modern Family but that's the last I've seen of him.

He was magnificent in Fight Club.

Holy necro-bump batman.

He really is one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood, I wish he was in more stuff.

Although The Prestige>The Illusionist, I watched both back to back with an Edward Norton bias and The Prestige still kicked so much ass, I think it's my favorite Chris Nolan movie.

It's funny how 5 years gone by, and we are still saying the same thing lol.

How the fuck can Nicholas Cage get work, yet this guy can't?

i wanna say i recall him being salty he had to do the Italian Job out of some contractual obligation or something, and then years later, he's playing a much better Hulk, but some link somewhere said Marvel said he was too difficult to work with, and they wouldn't be casting him again.

is it possible dude's let his acting chops go to his head and getting a rep like Jack Nicholson but way earlier or something? like others here, i cant logically come up with a lot of other reasons why a great actor is so scarce.

IrishNinja is pretty much on the ball, I've also read reports that he lets his ego get the better of him and that he can be an incredibly hard guy to work with.

With regards to TIH, I'd love to see the 3 hour cut. Something tells me it'd be the best ever comic book movie ever. :(

From what I have read, he is a royal pain in the ass to work with. An extremely talented actor, but directors and studios don't want the headache of dealing with him.
