What the hell is 'butt rock'?

This.

This thread is proof that Gaf's music enthusiasts certainly aren't aficionados. Folks calling crotch rock butt rock, butt rock nu metal, and claiming that GnR is the same type of music as Poison; absofuckinglutely nonsense. Guns N Roses was a late 80's hard rock band that became something of an antithesis of the prevailing pop friendly and excess driven hair metal of the time. Guns N Roses was so popular because they were much more grounded and real when rock had become so theatrical.

And those calling Guilty Gear's soundtrack butt rock? Get some help or at the very least read a bit on the subject before showing your ass.

Well, someone needs a nap.

also, AC/DC, Van Halen, Aerosmith. Basically any shitty rock band from the 70s/80s that have t-shirts in Walmart. Typically focus on guitar-wankery and shrill voices; the subject of their lyrics is how much they're going to rawk. They often show up on VH1 specials like "I Love the 80s" or whatever. Can often be heard in American drinking establishments, probably because it's best digested after a few pints.

hope this clears things up.

Ac/dc, Van Halen and Aerosmith all had great albums. What the he'll are you talking about? I don't even like rock that much, but I know those bands are not butt rock. Poison, Winger and Warrant were examples of 80s butt rock. POD, Nickel back and Staind are examples late 90s early 2000s butt rock.

I always thought of buttrock as grinding, lyric-less guitar riffs that are omnipresent in shallow action movies/games. They have a dull, heavy sound with little variety. Pro Wrestling has a lot of buttrock, especially if you are early in your career or a jobber, but hell even top tier guys also have buttrock themes.

If anything, this thread proves there's no real definition to it.

If you ask me, it's the kinda stuff you hear in Dynasty Warriors. Not a lot of substance to it, just a lot of harmonized lead guitar parts and relatively high tempo drums.

I think the patterns seems to be "cheesy mainstream rock" - depending on your age that might mean Poison/Motley Crue/Warrant or that might mean Nickelback/Creed/Seether.

I've always known "butt rock" to be hair bands (I'm 36) but I think there's a solid argument to be made to brand bands like Nickelback with that label, because if it was 1989 Nickelback would absolutely have been a hair band.

Butt rock (or cock rock) is a term that game from the 80'd era of pop-metal hair bands that wore tight leather and spandex pants.

Many times it was alleged these band members would stuff their crotch and have ass implants.

I used to think it was Nu Metal but apparently it's anything you want it to be! :D

Pretty much any rock that makes you say, think or feel "bleh".

Disturbed would be my example.

That's not fair to nu-metal. There were totally like 2, maybe 3 nu-metal bands around the turn of the century that weren't completely awful.

Slipknot wasn't one of them tho.

Deftones?

Deftones.

Originally, an interchangeable term with hair metal. Now encompassing rock bands that are of a similar vapid nature. Beer and lifestyle rock.
