What were your impressions of Mario 64 when it was released?

Worst post or all time? You need to read some more threads.

Crash 1 was always better. I played Mario 64 when it came out (Europe) and it was a huge turd compared the Crash 1 that I had already been playing. People keep saying how they were amazed by it being in 3D. Well when you've been playing Crash 1 for a couple of months and then play Mario 64 for the first time Mario 64 came off as complete "meh".

Your position is just uncomprehendible to me. Crash was so much smaller, cruder and clunkier than mario in all areas of gameplay and presentation.

I love Crash Bandicoot as much as the next guy, but the transition wasn't mind-blowing to me with it. Crash Bandicoot is 3D, but it plays mostly like a linear 2D game, with very narrow paths and only one direction to go in. Mario 64 was completely open, a massive departure from the series' side-scrolling roots.

While I can relate to the jealousy (didn't get to properly play Mario 64 till on an emulator in 2004) I still agree with him that Crash outshone Mario 64 is many areas, the graphics of it still hold up today. As a pure platformer Crash is superior. Look at the new Mario on WiiU, much more Crash than Mario 64.

What a garbage comment.

90% of the comments are saying it was one of their greatest if not the greatest gaming experience they ever had, and you come in here saying you played it ....on a fucking emulator in 2004.

I don't need to say more, I fucking pity you, that missed out on the experience.

"What the hell is this? How am I supposed to control it? Is this controller for giants with three hands? Why am I jumping through paintings? Why am I spinning turtles around and throwing them into mines?"

I was 9 months old when the game came out.

Though when I was old enough to understand everything, it quickly became my favourite game of all time. Still is.

No words can describe how floored I was when I experienced SM64 back in 1996.

I used to play Mario 64 with my Dad literally every single day.
It was probably our favorite game on N64
(until We got Star Fox).
I'll never forget the day we beat bowser. It was truly a mind blowing moment at the time.
The giant eel still creeps me out though...

I was around 11 years old at the time Mario 64 commercials and news started coming out. I honestly didn't know what to think about it. I liked video games a lot, but I wasn't subscribed to nintendo power at the time and I wasn't obsessed about video games as I am now. I was still pretty happy with my Super NES. I saw commercials and was I was like "Ok That looks cool I guess."

It was actually a friend of my older brother and sister's that got my hyped about the game. He was super impressed by the 3D graphics and controller and talked a lot about how innovative it was. Talking to him about the N64 and Super Mario 64 actually got me into gaming now that I think about it. I started consuming as much information as I could about the N64 and Super Mario 64. Did anyone else read those free pamphlets about games from Walmart obsessively like I did as a child?

I eventually saved allowances, birthday money, and money from mowing my grandmother's yard to buy an N64 with Super Mario 64. Saving that much money took a long time for me as an eleven year old. I do not have the kind of parents that run out and buy their kids anything they want, or go crazy at Christmas. It was worth the time and effort to be able play it on my 13 inch television in my room though.

Amazed beyond belief, from the original shoshinkai trailer to actually playing the game. The versatility they gave mario was unmatched before and after. Long jumps, triple jumps, backflips....it was so much fun it was unreal.

Such a peerless 2d->3d transition.

To expand upon my first experience of playing this game, it was a demo unit in Blockbuster. I was glued to the screen. I was really amazed from top to bottom. The graphics, the controls, the freedom, the level design, it was just incredible. I had never played or seen something like it. We truly will probably never see something that moved the industry forward in such a manner ever again.

Dude, no. Crash has smoother, cartoon-like animation and maybe more detail in its decidedly narrow and limited scenery, but those are the only good things I can say about it compared to Mario 64. SM64's level were bigger, more diverse and way more original. The game is jampacked with content. After playing Crash 1 recently I can categorically say that it's inarguably an intensely repetitive and simple game. And the controls are not "tight". There's a sense of weight to everything you do in Super Mario 64, just moving and jumping felt right and a massive leap forward compared to anything before it. Crash feels very dated in comparison.

I would even say the Crash games are pretty friggin' mediocre at best, and not even worth playing.

I was fifteen y.o. and in Naples (Italy) there was a shop that imported n64 jap version with rgb mod. I saw Mario 64 on a newsmagazine (Mega Console) and in 1996 I saw the game at that shop.

It's impossible to explain my emotions, really impossibile.

I have to say only one thing, my n64 emotions are also strict bounded with the age. I was a teenager, I had spare time to play with friends that had n64 too (Wcw Vs Nwo revenge was the key to stay awake in the night :D)

At that time was really impossible to study for the high school, I remember I was studying, in the afternoon, latin traduction and the courier buzzs the door. He delivered to me an envelope. It was Killer Instinct Gold. That afternoon never saw me studying.

Having a jap/usa n64 was a problem regarding the cost of the games.

n64 was the best console for me.

It was the reason why I bought a N64, I couldn't wait so I bought a Japanese set with the game, still have the Japanese game and box in great condition. Best 2D to 3D transition in gaming for me hands down, I was 16 at the time.

I had a SNES but never heard of the N64 before. I had previous experience with 3D games, since I played Star Fox and Duke Nukem 3D, but that didn't stop me from enjoying jumping around the outskirts of the castle for hours before finaly entering the Bob-Omb Battlefield. It was an incredible experience.

Worst post of all time.

Crash 2 is one of my favourite psx games, but even that doesn't hold a candle to Mario 64 let alone the rough first iteration of Crash. Heck, I didn't even own a N64 when Mario 64 came out, but I was so jealous of it.

The platforming in the Crash Bandicoot games utterly destroys Mario 64. In Mario 64 you were never really faced with any challenges that required you to move and jump with precision. The only "obstacle" that provided any real threat to the player's safety was the pisspoor camera. Other than that, the game was mostly a dull, empty sandbox. Crash Bandicoot is the quintessential example of how to do platforming in 3D. It had perfect controls, focused level design and classic platforming setpieces that required skill on the part of the player to navigate.

I played it when it was new but only round friends houses or on demo units. When I played it on an emulator was when I properly sat down and got all 120 stars.

Have these people 100%'d all the Crashes and Mario 64? Because I have and I know which one is better.

It blew my mind, but not as much as the fact that there are people in 2013 who actually think Crash Bandicoot was even worthy of being compared to Super Mario 64.

I remember watching an episode of Bad Influence in the UK as they did an N64 Japan launch thing and it looked awesome. It was probably Mario Kart 64 and Goldeneye that really impressed me later on.

Blew the shit out of me.
Actually, the whole N64 experience blew me away. I was (and I'm still) annoyed by loading times. The controller was out of space (and amazing).
I was 12. The game still amazes me to this day...

Crash Bandicoot better than Mario 64? how is this even worthy of conversation... Mario 64 brought 3D platforming to the next level, we're all playing the same games right?

The first freaking level in Crash Bandicoot has more complex platforming than the entirety of Mario 64.

Exactly.

I agree with the Mario 64ists that it has better 3D environments (explorable) and more adventuring and variety in missions.

But actual pure platforming and sweaty hand moments are not as common with Mario 64 as they are with Crash. And the graphics of Crash and artstyle still holds today, Mario 64 not so much.

And as I said before the proof is in the pudding. The latest 3D Mario games are moving towards that narrow, focused and optimised platforming akin to Crash.

The game blew my fucking mind like everyone else.

The first time I saw/played it was at one of those Diehard GameFan stores in Naperville IL I believe it was. They had the Japanese version running for the public to play months before the US release. It was 5 bucks to play for 10 minutes, the line went out the door lol.

Really?

The one time in human history where we actually got "flying cars". It absolutely obliterated any wild hope I could have had for next gen graphics and gameplay.

...If it were to happen today, it would be like the PS4 rendering at 4k in Occulus 3D with a first person Resident Evil game.

edit: And I feel so much sympathy for rjc751, not ever having played the game.

Crash Bandicoot. heh, so cute.

I didn't care for it, honestly, and still feel it's one of the weakest Mario titles. But I've made my opinion known about when Mario and Zelda went 3D for a while now, so ... *shrugs*

You're not wrong. The Crash Bandicoot games are essentially something like Donkey Kong Country in 3D which is good, but Mario 64 was so much more than that. I finished all the Crash games and got 120 stars in Mario 64 but while Crash Bandicoot 2 was fun and I finished it in a couple days, Mario 64 consumed me for months and worked my brain and my imagination so much more. If we're going to compare platform games, I'd say the Spyro series had more in common with SM64, the environments were bigger and more exploratory.

Yes and Jak&Daxter after that.

Dare I say it GTA3 might be more comparable to Mario 64 than Crash can be.

It was the most mind blowing thing I had ever experienced in my young life. I knew almost immediately I could never go back to 2D sidescrollers. It was the next big evolution of the industry, like movies getting sound.

Different strokes for different folks... I found the first Crash pretty mediocre when it first came out, played it for a while to be honest since it was a lot of trial and error going through the levels.

I was 11 and when my friend showed me how pressing the analog stick gently would make him tiptoe, I lost it.

i liked the 3D, but that time i was already playing Ridge racer,Tekken, Final Fantasy VII and Wipeout, so the graphics did not really appeal to me. They were too triangular

When I got my N64 for Christmas I had wished for Mario Kart 64 as that was the only game I knew of that existed on the console having played it at a friend's. I had a NES and had played an SNES prior so I was pretty versed in the Mario platformers, but my knowledge of games outside of that was insular.

When I got the game for Christmas and found myself at first disappointed seeing that it wasn't Mario Kart 64, I was incredibly curious about what this "Super Mario 64 thing" was.

The only reaction I can truly remember that it had on me the first time I started the game was "holy crap, no timer?"

Everything else that followed was just straight up magical, to climbing the Bob-Omb mountain, to discovering that you can surf on Koopa Shells, getting to the first Bowser stage, enjoying the tranquility of Jolly Roger Bay and finally the god damn Wing Cap.

I had read about the N64 in Nintendo Power (of course), but I will never forget the day a demo version showed up in Toys R Us. I must've spent the better part of an hour running in cicrcles around the castle, swimming in the moat, and flipping off trees. My impressions: gamechanger + must have.

All I am taking from this thread is that opinions don't matter and it's impossible to like Crash more than Mario 64.

I don't think its impossible, but I would say that Crash had to have hit some very particular buttons in a person's head to have it leap over Mario. But then, who am I to judge? I didn't like either game.

Heh funny thing is I never played the original version until recently. I played the DS version first, and enjoyed it quite a lot.

I tried out the VC version on the Wii, but the controls just feel like a massive hurdle for me. Maybe the game just doesn't play well with a GC controller.

Amazing game, when i first played it i was in disbelif of how a game could be done like this (had a ps1 & saturn at the time). the n64 has so many amazing games for its time(m64, oot, waverace, f zero, Mk and on and on).

I think the best way to understand how good these games were is to look how games are made now and before the n64 and you will see how the n64 changed things. platform games are still make like m64, adventure games like oot.

Smb, mario64, oot.

All of these games blew my mind away. It was an unbelievable feeling to play these games back in the day. I never experienced something like that before.

Maybe gravity rush could be something like mario 64 but it still feels a bit unfinished....

No game came ever close to these.

I will remember them forever.

Seal of quality.

Legend has it that three games stunned thewhitehawk and left him glued to the screen where all reality around him faded and where his attention was devoted solely, completely, to the games themselves.

The three legendary games were Sonic of the first, Fantasies of Final the seventh, and Mario, the Super, of the Sixty Four.
