What would you say are the best indie games on PC?

Pretty broad question with too many diverse answers to be of any help.

So I'll throw a nod in for an underdog. VCD is an OCD's nightmare / dream come true.

It dares to ask the question, "After 30+ years of sci/fi corridor shooters, what really happens when the smoke clears?" Someone's gotta clean it up, right?

It's a Zen gameplay loop with an incredible sense of humor. Tons of diverse maps as well.

Excellent lists here already. I'll add these three on the side scrolling genre. They were very satisfying to play and master.

+1. This game is amazing.

For me the very best are:

Legend of Grimrock 2
Spelunky
Toki Tori 2+
Divinity: Original Sin
Axiom Verge
La-Mulana
and The Witness

In no particular order.
Actually Spelunky first.

Everyone has listed some of the best games out there, love a lot of those and there's a lot more I have that I still haven't gotten to!

Here's three I recommend big time. Two are similar, but they are all addictive as hell:

Luftrausers
Enter the Gungeon
Nuclear Throne

So many hours eaten up by them!!

Recettear. An excellent JRPG that is similar in some ways like Atelier games. Time management, resource management, and of course, dungeon crawler.

Capitalism Oh!

Dunno if Shadowrun games are indies but they are also great.

This is in fact easily one my top 5 of the year so far. Really great game all around, both in presentation and gameplay.

Definitely at the top for me too. This and Thea The Awakening just kind of came out of no where and surprised me with how awesome they were.

Out of curiousity what would be your other 4?

Some of my faves:

Risk of Rain
Spelunky
Undertale
Bastion
Rampage Knights
Stardew Valley
Binding of Isaac
Darkest Dungeon

Gonna have to bookmark this page for when I get out of work. Been looking for some less graphically intense games to mess with on my Surface Pro 3. Been playing Legend of Dungeon and while I really like it I'm looking for something with progression rather than dying and starting over. Good game though.

It never really got much attention, but Iji handles the whole pacifist/killer gimmick better than any other game I've played in my opinion, and yes that includes Undertale.

One thing I found annoying about this game is that for all the Dark Souls inspiration it has, it doesn't save item collection or other progress between deaths, and death takes you to a menu rather than immediately restarting you at the last this-isn't-a-bonfire-but-it's-a-bonfire. The game is challenging with bosses needing a few tries to get down, so these feel like waste of time nuisances.

At this point, probably The Witness, Dark Souls 3, N++ and Raw Data.

Iji got a lot of attention back in the day. I remember playng it when I was younger. It was very highly praised for a freeware game

Oh really? I guess I was never really involved with that scene back then. I stumbled on it at one point and never really saw it come up in conversation the way that stuff like Cave Story or Aquaria did.

Here's a list taken from my "favorites" section in my Steam library.

Risk of Rain is an incredible Platforming Rogue-like with a great co-op mechanic. I've logged hundreds of hours playing this game.

Nuclear Throne is a wonderful top-down-shooter Rogue-like-like. It's hard, but it's great.

header.jpg

Super Crate Box scratches the arcade itch I need to be scratched from time to time. And it's free.

Undertale is Undertale. Its reputation precedes it, and with good reason. It's got a great soundtrack, memorable characters, and a fantastic narrative.

Cave Story is the game that got me into game development and showed me that one person can indeed make a game. It's on my top ten list of games of all time, and the only "metroidvania" that I've ever completed. The original is free, but I recommend paying for the + version.

FTL has a great soundtrack and I've put 27 hours into it and never beat it. I should do that sometime.

THOTH is my favorite horror/souls game of 2016. Sure it may not be a typical one of either of those, but the it's-all-there-in-front-of-you gameplay and the horrifying soundscape makes for an unforgettable experience.

Amazing list, Hektor. You even got Expeditions: Conquistador! I salute you.

Now, I should have looked closer at OP's games, it reminded me of some good indie titles well worth mentioning for anyone interested:

Adventure games by Wadjet Eye
. Be it developed or published by them, you can rest assured they're great.
So:
  • Blackwell Quintology (Play them in order)
  • Technobabylon
  • Gemini Rue
  • Resonance
  • Primordia
  • +more I haven't played.

and in the same vein of "anything touching this dev," the throwback RPGs by Spiderweb Software. Avadon and Avernum chiefly, but I'm sure the others are just as good.

Holy shit you guys.

Amazing lists, including ones not quoted here.

There are so many I wanna check out, but FTL, Divinity, Transistor, Momodora, and holy crap Thumper all look great.

More_Badass and Hektor, those are some magnificent posts/lists, thanks! Many other great posts as well, makes you happy that there is so much great stuff left to play.

I can mainly/only reiterate:
80 Days
Abzû
Braid
Factorio
FEZ
Firewatch
Gone Home
Guacamelee!
Her Story
Hotline Miami
Inside
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
Papers, Please
Quadrilateral Cowboy
Starbound
Super Meat Boy
The Swapper
The Witness
TIS-100

...and the game that will be given a permanent honorary mention by me:

I guess I might add Shenzhen I/O in a while, haven't started it yet. (I want to mention Black Mesa as well, but I guess it is supposed to be disqualified due to being a mod.)

Amazing list of games. I cant keep up anymore though, with work + school, i cant find time. But so many are on my wishlist. PC gaming has changed so much focus with indies, it's no longer about top of the line graphics with powerful GPUs. In fact, i'm thinking of just having a HTPC with a 1050ti in the nearby future under my HDTV for all these indie games. I'll keep a robust desktop for the fps (mouse+keyboard) & space sims (hotas).
