Whatever Happened to Penny Arcade?

They're still around, but I never see the comic referenced anywhere anymore. What happened? Did the quality decline? Have they become too public with their politics and people are avoiding them (I know they've said some questionable things in the past)?

I haven't kept up in the past few years. Their stuff in the past had always been hit or miss with me. I just feel like the name has fallen off the face of the earth except for PAX. Are they even present at PAxes?

They repeatedly and loudly put their feet in their mouths. And the art turned to shit. And they are completely irrelevant as they've slid further and further into "old men yelling at clouds" territory.

I think gamer webcomics have just had their day in the sun?

They've expanded their business into a lot of areas and seem to be doing just fine though.

Are they the guys that made a Kickstarter because they wanted to travel to some kind of convention, so another group of people made a Kickstarter so they could also go to the same convention just to beat up the penny arcade guys? I might be thinking of some other internet group.

they seemed to have found their spot on the internet. A lot of gaming related content everywhere now. They have a lot going besides to web comic so they are doing fine.

Every so often some of the comics are good, but as someone's who's never paid much attention to them there's a massive ton of weird comics in between the jokes that it's hard to even understand the tone of. Sometimes they do these weirdly serious comics or comics that have nothing at all to do with games, which is cool I guess, but not something I'm interested in.

Particularly, I really dislike their current art style. It puts me off terribly - to the point that I might even have lost cool strips due to just not reading them anymore.

Pretty much this. With Twitter and YouTube, there's more exposure to opinions and such. I felt like the early days of webcomics was a way to be entertained and get insight on other opinions of gaming... You also have a lot of memes now too that feed into this webcomic fix too..

They're still pretty great and their empire is as big as ever. They're busy running multiple conventions, making board games, doing streams of games, hosting other comics, and so on. They've become a lot more than just their strip and Tycho's news posts.

Also, this thread is funny, especially the art criticisms, considering a recent comic they did:

Still can't get over Tycho's reaction to Undertale. "I can’t abstract it enough to even look at it". Fucking ridiculous.

Dickwolves fiasco?
I have no idea what this was but my mind is conjuring up.....disturbing images.

They made a rape joke, and when they got called out on it they shit all over the floor and rolled in the shit and ate it and told everyone how good the shit was when really a simple 'my bad' would have sufficed.

I'll definitely mirror the sentiments that the art style just looks kind of bad now. I imagine they just have their base of followers and beyond that, its more about PAX these days anyhow.

I used to check the comic at least weekly until it started seeming like most of the comics were about tabletop stuff.

Meh, who cares? Used to love it, but you know, you get older and shit and tastes changes. I like that the artist actually developed his style and changed it. Not my taste, but whatever.

They do good charity work. They're using their power for good.

I used to check it out regularly but gave them up around the time of their kickstarter money grab. And I think there was something about an intern post or reality show contest that seemed pretty explorative considering they could just employ someone around that time too.

The quality declined (and tbh, was never that great to begin with)

Here is the most recent strip. You may notice there's no actual punchline.

Wow. This feels exactly like one of those PA knockoffs that appeared back in the day.

Except the joke part is just cribbed from an AVGN ad-lib.

Woah wtf happened with the art. It wasn't like this 3 years ago.

Also it's simply that, the comics have no real punchline anymore. They all became either too pseudo intellectual, lack an actual joke or just are very irrelevant to gaming as a whole for me to care.

But PAX still seems like a good convention so I'm glad they're still doing well
