Whatever happened to The Division?

Huh? Hard to take your post seriously.

Because I don't spend $60 to just play for an hour and give up. Waste of money, besides I gave the game a chance. Plenty of games are boring to start then get better, not Division.

You more than gave the game a chance if you took the time to get the plat trophy. I guess you don't find your time valuable. To each their own.

Wow - I think people are being way too hard on this game.

The base game, which you can play through on singleplayer in around 30 hours or so (or run through much faster by grouping up), has interesting missions and an interesting progression system in which you unlock/advance the three main parts of the base-of-operations to support your player's skills. You also had to fight to reach and unlock a safehouse in every neighborhood in Manhattan

I did every mission, side mission solo and unlocked every safehouse solo. It was a great game to play solo.

The endgame is a mixed bag, but what I have liked about the development team is that they are really making an effort to fix things and try new things. The released in April (?), and they have already had 3 major updates (1.1, 1.2 and 1.3) and released the Underground DLC. They admit that the endgame is a work in progress and have a second DLC (Survival) that is scheduled to be released at the end of the summer, with a third major DLC scheduled for Winter 2017. There are likely to be additional major updates as well.

For me though, the added bonus in this game is that I play on PS4 and have found several dozen great people who enjoy the game and like to play as a team. So, even though the endgame is still a work in progress, the fact that the developers are regularly offering updates really keeps our attention.

It feels like a high budget F2P game... most people dont last

Hardcore players went back to Destiny and casuals went to Overwatch

getting good loot took a lot of grinding and a lot of luck. too much focus on rng mods with too high a cost for crafting items. maybe i could have stomached it if the gameplay was better

I played the game for about 12 hrs, up to the point where I did not have the level required to do a main story level and had to do side stuff. Running inside buildings also had me motion sick within 20 mins. Thirdly some of the boss battles were crap. Most of them were overpowered and u could cheese them with a single tactic.

The graphics and the dark zone were the best thing about the game unfortunately I wasn't good enough to enjoy the dark zone.

No end game besides Dark Zone, which was a fucking terrible idea from the word "go."

I play it regularly and theres always alot of people around.

I've reached 300hrs ingame (pc version).

Underground brought some life on it, actually it's fun to matchmake or go in groups just for the sake of the challenge; doing 3 or more phases with all the directives its really hard, but also satisfying until the game totally fucks up at certain point.

There are still huge issues plaguing this game, with Massive being one of them. They cannot get themselves around the balancing of the new sets, plus the DZ pvp system is totally broken (theres always a new Meta, nerfing the previous ones doesn't help).

The enemies in Heroic are lvl35 and they're basically bullet sponges, also shotgunners are basically the No.1 enemy in this game, even at low levels they can pretty much one shot you (if you dont have a good gear with good rolls) or in 2 hits.

Which is totally normal because a shotgun in the face should supposedly kill you right-on, but you do expect at least to down them in the same time, but NO.

Those fuckers have around 17million of health, a full armor, so basically it takes a team of 4 to down them. And they come always in 2.

The RNG is broken. The scavenging is broken. The loot - after a long, hard session - is for the most part broken.

But still, it's fun. I don't play it anymore for loot or to best my actual sets, i do play it because the challenge in heroics incursions and underground is satisfying enough to keep myself going until a new patch/expansion drops.

In the end UG is the best thing happened to this game. It's not dead, nor much alive, it's like a Zombie-game.

Aside from the graphics and co-op factor lets face it - it's a dreadful game. So many mind boggling balance and design issues. Combine that with the generic looking player aesthetics, terrible RNG loot and barebones end game...

Spent almost a month in total game hours. Haven't touch it since clear sky update. The underground came late on PS4 too.

Great idea, great setting, badly implemented, clueless dev team when it comes to playing to the strengths of their game. DZ was utter enfuriating shit. Wasted opportunity due to lack of devs understanding of their target audience

I stopped playing after a month or so due to the insane amount of glitches.

That said, I've just reinstalled the game a couple days ago. I'm planning to jump back in after I'm finished with my Human Revolution replay. The wait for Mankind Divided is agonizing.

How has the DLC been for the game? I remember almost buying the season pass at a discount, but held off to wait for more concrete details. But I never really got too interested in going back to the game, though I enjoyed it at the time.

Underground has been okay. it's essentially for folks who don't like Dark Zone or want to try something different... basically the game's answer to Diablo rifts. if you liked the game there's worse things to spend $15 on

Shooting bad guys with thick sweaters doing thousands of points of damage to them until the real big bad guy with a sweater knitted by his mom who has 1 million hp shows up so I can get a different coloured gun that does a little bit more damage *GASPS FOR AIR* is kinda boring and sterile. Dark Zone isn't even fun because everyone shoots everyone on sight for no reason, no one even picks up the dropped items. The game really nailed the atmosphere but since the rest of the game has the trademark ultra sterile souless feeling to it I had no reason to stay. Dark Zone honestly looked amazing and the game should be rebranded as Raccoon City: The Division so that way 95% of the games environment is more than just trash blowing in the wind.

The one thing that i think is wrong and they refuse to acknowledge is how the darkzone works...you look at successful open world games like gtav and they have a passive mode....the division instead rewards assholes and because of this many people left.

The absurd amount of hacking killed it for me. By the sounds of it the problem is still ongoing. It's a shame, because I did actually enjoy the game for what it was.

Hmm interesting might have to check this out.

I remember now that the DLC was time exclusive to xbox one, and I played the game on PC. They may have caused more harm than good since it looks like player interest dropped quite rapidly - when I checked and saw the exclusivity at the time I was playing the game I laughed, realizing I would probably have moved on by the time it was launching and thats what happened.

I was extremely hyped for this game, and got a lot of mileage out of the single player campaign. But mostly because of the atmosphere and the city. The missions themselves were ultra repetitive and by the time I had worked my way through half the map's territories I couldn't care less about another supply drop or arms deal.

The Darkzone is a total goatfuck. A meatgrinder where any lone traveler gets destroyed by gankers. I'm not sure why Massive keeps acting like this was intended, when it both clearly wasn't and deters any solo player from ever entering the Darkzone. But hey, let's put the best loot in there as an extra "fuck you" to players who prefer playing solo.

Finally I think the way they handled DLC was a catastrophic mistake. Timed exclusivity, mediocre output in vanity items [if any]. I have a season pass but I absolutely regret getting it. By the time the first DLC dropped for PS4 I already moved on long ago.

i think the crux off the game's problems is it doesn't know if it wants to be strictly squad-based or not

i mean it *can* be fun solo. even DZ solo can be fun on a good server and it'll play like advertised, not every single group is going to mow you down but you still need to be on your feet and extract with caution

thing is you hit a wall way too early and the way loot is dispersed can makes gains incremental and maddening. for example the Nomad gear set is ideal for solo players but the only way to obtain it is grinding DZ, which is just probably the worst way go about it. yeah you can get it doing HVTs or underground runs but the chances for a drop are like .0001%

unless you really luck out with matchmaking every time you really need a committed group to grind out incursions. the "fun" in playing solo is "there" but you'll only get so much mileage

Count me in as one of the people that wanted to like it. Liked the setting and premise. However, after a few hours in the open beta, I realised it wasn't for me and never made the purchase.

The whole idea of the endgame basically being a pvp gankfest wasn't terribly appealing either

The city was a complete bore as well. Everywhere looked almost exactly the same, you couldn't see any other players in the wild and somehow rain wasn't included.

..you do know what happens to rain in cold temperatures, right?

What happened? It got turned into a movie script! Looking forward to it.

The game is quite decent imo. I had a blast leveling with friends. Spent about 3 days waking up, playing the whole day and then going to sleep. Played for 157 hours overall. Good times. I bought the season pass and I do regret it though. My interest in the game started to wither with the content patches like incursions, huge disappointment. Also the upcoming DLC really don't look that special, neither does "dangerous urban dungeons". My friends started to stop playing, then so did I. Ofcourse I'm going to test the DLC at some point, but at the moment I have new things to play. I can't name many games I have played as much as I have Division. Easily worth the price.

I hated that the leveling areas got abandoned and end game was restricted to Dark Zone and mission areas. The world was gorgeous and detailed. But we didn't get to spend enough time in it.

ME: Finally End Game
GAME: HAH! Farm the ever living crap out of stuff and have fun getting ganked in Darkzone huehuehuehue

ME: Okay Darkzone...

Essentially the community murdered itself by making the one place for upgrades into a noob gankzone at the gates.
Then they get all defensive about it saying it was their $60 that paid for the game... yet whine about the lack of players.
GG asswipes yall killed your own fun by gating new guys

This is exactly why I stopped playing the game and will never touch it again.

I was so disappointed with it after the Beta. The Darkzone was crazy fun in the Beta but it just didn't scale well for the full release.

The game was fun and rather enjoyable when you were leveling up but once you hit 30 there was nothing to do besides grind the dark zone. The daily "hard" missions meant to give you tokens for really good weapons were next to impossible (4-5 shot gun enemies rushing you that all one shot you and take hella fuckin bullets). And that was about it.

Dark zone was fun at first but then you realize you're leaving and loading up the same few bosses over and over. On top of that the PVP element which was very interesting, was completely broken by the fact that there was no reason for anyone to go rogue. The risks far outweighed the rewards. You were better off just helping other people kill bosses.

Then they took forever for the incursion to come out only for it to be a completely garbage horde mode.

On top of all of that, since we compare it to destiny, it just wasn't as fun to play. Destiny has arguably some of the best shooting mechanics ever to make up for its lack of content.

Edit: oh yeah, and it was supposed to be an RPG type deal but every player ended up using the same few abilities so there was no variety. At least in destiny each class had significant differences with their abilities.

I had a different experience when I was playing solo - I definitely had several lulls in the leveling progression between missions (Vanilla Destiny had one or two as well, but less pronounced) and the people I got with matchmaking were pretty damn bad in a lot of cases.

Playing cooperatively with my buddy was a completely different story, very fun.

The Incursion sucked, and then the next Incursion sucked, and the Dark Zone sucked, because it stuttered like crazy and everyone was running around with glitched loot, and the PVP combat sucks, and the PVE combat is bullet sponge suck. Basically it was the suckiest suck that ever sucked.

It probably would have worked better if they just designed it as a straight single player game.

This is exactly why I stopped playing the game and will never touch it again.

Me too.

I can understand people wanting your loot and taking you out at extraction points . But high ranking players would camp gates killing on site before i could collect anything. I think the creators of the game wanted players on 'manhunt' status to be hunted by everyone in the lobby, but how it actually worked is that everyone would run away from that symbol, because they were either so over powered that they were unstoppable or they were with another group of people that would gank you as soon as you neared.

Some of the neogaf community encouraged this type of play too. Calling low level players and relatively new players to the dark zone 'bambis'

Still play at least a couple of times a week and when I do play I enjoy my time spent. I have no troubles matchmaking (at least in terms of getting a full group) for most content even now so i don't think it is dead yet despite what seems to be the general feeling in this thread. That said, whilst it is retaining a user base, it's not getting that many new players I suspect as matchmaking whilst leveling up an alt definitely took a little longer.

I like it but appreciate it's not perfect (is any game?).

I can see and understand why it would piss off people from both the "casual" and "hardcore" populations with the way it works and the number of bugs but I still hope to see Massive continue to work on refining the current content, continuing to add more and then put everything they've learnt into a sequel.

Nothing happened. Still tons of people on regularly. I still have fun with it. I'm also not the type to rush through new content as fast as I can then scream the game is boring. Which happens a ton online.

You need to remember that GAF and other forums are the 1%.

Story was generic and boring, end game was nearly non existent, the dark zone was always a flawed concept and the setting cut off most of the potential to fix issues with the games extremely lack of diversity in play.

The Division was great! During the initial story run. Playing through the story missions the first few times with friends, gearing up a bit, and taking down the final boss was a great feeling.

However, Division's Long tail was worse than Destiny's. Waaay worse. One of the biggest issues (and I think the issue that really caused the rest of them) is DPS Calulation. It was utterly arcane, and those who managed to figure it out (which the info is widely available, but very little of the casual playerbase bothered with it) managed to get STUPID high DPS, turning even the super hard missions, incursions and the like into a joke. That combined with some hacking on the PC side kinda screwed it.

Core gameplay is interesting enough to keep playing, atmosphere and design is top notch, endgame is completely fucked up.

Gear that is by far the best in the game can only be obtained via farming the most boring mission which you also have to start ovet if you fail at any point (it takes about half an hour to complete). The Dark Zone is a failed experiment where the meta changes every patch but in the end always comes down to people with more luck with drops obliterating everyone else, plus hackers and gank squads. The PR guys are on holidays and will come back this Tuesday with another weekly 'State of the game' stream, so we may hear some updates there, but so far the thing they say during these streams is the most is "we are aware of your issues".

I recommend watching this video, it sums up pretty well how the remaining community feels about the game. Also r/thedivision.

If they don't announce a complete overhaul similar to Diablo or Destiny soon then there will be no one left to play the remaining expansions. Pity, I bought the collector's edition and still wear the watch, but I haven't touched the game in weeks.

Playing through the campaign and completely ignoring end game except completing all max level missions is still very enjoyable, but if you want to feel like you're being rewarded by progressing your character for playing the game, you will soon find that 99.9% of the gear that drops is completely useless, because some stats or perks are completely garbage and others are overpowered.

It got seriously boring to me after hitting level 30. I have no interest in playing it again. I also got it digital lol🙄

Like I said, I don't spend $60 just to not play. I am going to get my money's worth. I do find my time valuable but like you and everybody else here, we all occasionally spend on time on things that aren't really worth it. To each their fucking own.

That's what got quite a few of us to stop posting in the OT. The backtrack was hilarious too, saying the term "could be used for anyone" to not seem like assholes. So, you made up a term with no real definition? Okay. Even funnier is that I've seen a lot of those same players doing quite the console cheerleading in multiple threads. Truly diverse. That group dominated over half of the posts and I've seen 2 of them talk about having sold the game as of late June. Just goes to show that this forum is liable to see the same bullshit as everywhere else.

Sadly, what you wrote is partly true from my experience. We definitely had the most fun when 6+ people were trying to hunt us down. A lot of servers would have absolutely no one interested in taking us down though. We would do shit like go rogue/manhunt in the middle of Bryant Park and keep extracting trying to get PvP(we didn't want to demolish people, just have fun and a good challenge), and oftentimes it would take us hopping servers 4 or 5 times to get it. There were also the really feisty servers that would have almost the whole server chasing you. I once turned a corner and saw 14 people in 1 intersection. Talk about puckering. Those servers were equal parts fun and frustrating. You had to just try to run instead of fighting.

I played the game the first month, it was fun levelling up but the dark zone was a mess and my character had the Paul Rhodes glitch so I couldn't complete my character. Don't know if they have fixed that bug yet.

Solo PVE only player here; I pick it up every now and then since I still like the gameplay and setting, and some of the new additions like Underground are fun, but it quickly gets repetitive and feels like I never actually progress my character since the loot is so bad. Despite having a higher gear score, drops are almost always terrible and it is incredibly expensive to reroll stats/bonuses to make gear worth using. Crafting is an OK alternative, but blueprints are expensive (or locked behind high underground/DZ rankings) and requires a shitload of grinding for materials.
