What's an extremely obscure computer game you played back in the day?

vVhdWRi.jpg

Got it as part of the like 50 disk bundles you got with a PC. Still no idea what the hell I'm doing.

I don't know if that counts but Elasto Mania (aka "Elma").

Back in the day, it was an awesome indie game.

Played this as well. Not really that old though.

Games created by the Federal Ministry of the Interior to fight racism in the internet back in the mid 90's.

Also, good old Hugo games.

I used to play a lot of C64 games. One of them was about a droid who could should webs or something, it was a sidescroller/metroidish. It looked pretty good graphically. Have never been able to find the title of that game.

Here's an oldie: Bozo's Night Out for the Commodore 64.

The entire point of the game was to get as drunk as possible and safely return home from the pub.
The more drunk you got, the harder it became to control Bozo.
Eventually you'd be seeing pink elephants!
Also, if you managed to complete the game, a 'rotten liver' award would be yours...

I enjoyed a game called 'The Surgeon' on the Amiga a fait bit. A forerunner of the relatively recent Surgeon Simulator, but more serious with sensible controls.

A Math learning game starring an alien named Addy :D A lot of my friends played it back in the days.

Ahh, I had this one as well. I think the premise is really awesome, you get to play fun little mini games and learn stuff about everything. My parents bought me a few of those, as I believe there were other games from the IP where you would learn about geography and other stuff and not just math (or maybe I'm mixing that up).

A game that I also remember playing back in the days (was a young kid when I played this) is this one:

Point n' Click adventure and I have absolutely no idea what the plot was about. I just remember the main character having to deal with the bald guy and the blonde woman either being his GF or his crush.

Did anyone else play that weird stop motion game blackout from deadline games? You kept getting blackouts. I don't remember it that well, but it was a game all about choices and story, just remember it being really cool.

It was fantastic.

Thanks for this! Even looking through all the lists of clones I could find for both games, I still couldn't find Mr. Mack. I wonder if any of them have the signature "Ohh Nooooo" Game Over cry....

The key mechanical difference between Boulderdash and Repton is whether you can outrun a falling boulder - in Repton, they fall instantly, whereas in Boulderdash, they fall one tile for one game tick, and therefore you can potentially outrun them until you can get to a place you can dodge to the side.

Maybe someone can help with this one.

Back in probably the mid eighties, late at the most, my mate's dad has a business computer. It had a green screen and I'm pretty sure the monitor and keyboard were all one unit. I remember the screen being relatively small too.

There was a game I used to play on it and I think it was called "Intruder". I don't really remember much about the game except for one small thing: dogs were represented using the pi character. This leads me to believe this computer had no graphical capabilities and this "Intruder" game used the character map to display the game world.

I think it was a top-down view of rooms and you had to get from room to room without being caught.

A Google search hasn't really revealed much. Anyone else got any ideas?

There was one game I played at a friends house. Forgot the name, but I am pretty sure it was via Snes Emulator. You were a drug dealer, moving trough the City in first person, selling drugs and shooting guys while Gangsters Paradise was in the background the whole time.
Street life or something like this.

Nox.

A very cool game that had the misfortune of being overshadowed by Diablo. Still very playable as these types of games tend to hold up pretty well over time.

Don't know if it's considered obscure. played this a bunch though

This is the first C64 game I ever owned, back when it was new. Didn't beat it until a year or two ago, finally. No way I ever would've sorted out the end when I was a kid.

Strangely enough, there are quite a few completely different versions of cartridge art for this game:

I like how they just stole the art for Crystal Castles, hah

I'm trying to Google and Bing search it and it's not even coming up. It was probably my first game ever predating Super Mario World.

It's called "Xangar" or something to that effect. It was a 2D side scrolling action game that I first played at 4 or 5 years old when a friends Dad introduced it to me and my buddy on my families first Windows 95 PC way back in the day.

Had 2D sprites of a blonde dude IIRC where you had to platform and use fireballs etc. to make it past levels.

Not sure if anyone answered this, but probably Xargon?

I was thinking maybe it was a game on the Kaypro, but the list of games is short and doesn't include one called intruder. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Kaypro_games

I'm having a good time looking at footage of all these games.
Most of them are rather crummy, but that's part of the charm.
Probably this adventure game for kids based off a bunch of fairy tales thrown together with shitty music.
Oh, that's Mixed Up Mothergoose isn't it? I loved the early DOS version

The game's short midi rendition of 'Jack be nimble' still pops up in my head from time to time :P

Okay, I've mentioned some pretty obscure games so far, but there's a series of Commodore 64 games I'm 99.9999% sure nobody on GAF has ever played:

cassette_6403_01.jpg

Courbois Software, a Dutch developer, released various compilations of their own games, all packaged in a very simplistic manner like the example above. The games were very primitive as well, but I still had some fun with them. I have about four of those tapes at my parents' place.

It would probably be obscure in relation to some other stuff in this thread, I think. But I've played it. Super tough game, even on beginner. Gemstone Healer looks like it's even tougher.

You're seriously the only other person that knows about it that I've seen.

I was midway through my terrible Diablo addiction when I realized it was probably precipitated by Gemstone Warrior. It was probably my first true game obsession, aside from my Sinistar and Frogger compulsions. But I didn't have anything to play those on. I had Gemstone Warrior, and I lived in that game for so long.

Jazz Jackrabbit 2 anyone?
Played it so much as a kid. Still have the disc somewhere.
The red guy is called Spaz. Need I say more.

Made by Epic! Never knew that.

It's actually a game about being an adult; trying to attain happiness and money. Don't remember why I loved it but now i'm watching youtube videos about it.

There was a game I remember playing in the mid to late 80s on I think the Commodore 64. It was at my friends house and it was like an adventure game, with a Pit Fall Harry-like character. I think the action was on a single screen at a time. The one thing I distinctly remember was that when you made a jump that was too big, the character would stop in mid air shake their head "no" and fall. I'm pretty sure that was a desert area and a cave area. I have no idea what it was called, anyone know what I'm talking about?

I loved that game. Never completed it, though.

I've been trying to find it again for 20+ years now , to no avail.

Amiga game.

All I remember is a weird combination of Darklands Ultima VI and Realms of Arkania.
It might have even been a demo floppy that played on it's own.

The game started with 2 knights (top down view or isometric) that walk on a green field with rivers and encounter a dragon. Then one knight is attacking the tail while the other one's attacking the head maybe.

Haven't found it so far but I'll never stop asking :P

I played the Swedish strategy game "Svea Rike", about the historical Swedish Empire.

Heh, apparently Svea Rike was inspiration for the Crusader Kings series.

One of the greats, for sure, dunno how obscure it is, but what I do know is that the menu theme is bangin, Y'all ready for this?

Ever beat it? It gets pretty intense for a game from such a simpler era.
