What's currently the best social network?

I use Facebook for people I know in real life, and Twitter mostly for people I don't know personally.

It's kind of sad that I generally prefer Twitter to Facebook.

So I'm trying out Twitter right now and I'm finding it pretty useless. Any news or information I see I either already read about or was about to go to that site anyway to read it. So what's the point of Twitter if I'm just gonna read the same shit on those websites?

And I just tried out Reddit...HELLLLL NO. Wall of text everywhere! And it's so dumb! People are posting the same news articles 3-4 times in a row and the subreddits aren't any better. The subreddits just post irrelevant pictures that one person thought was funny and wanted to share. And another one posted that The Price is Right debuted 42 years ago. Cool. Why am I wasting my time with this shit?

So what do I do? Maybe I should just stick to Facebook (begrudgingly) and NeoGAF. At least on GAF we post relevant information and funny stuff.

Give twitter another shot! Do you use lists? It helps up the enjoyment factor immensely for me... That and the mute option. Take control of your feed! =)

I only belong to one social network, Twitter, and it took me a while to "get" it (several weeks).

My feed of people I'm following these days looks incredibly weird. It's a mix of local news, neighborhood busybodies, Nintendo fans, Saints fans, energy/environment/science policy, and a dash of comedians. Your feed becomes what you make of it, essentially.

I don't keep-up with it very well, but one of my favorite things is that when I'm stuck at work reading it, I'm usually several hours ahead of anyone else at my workplace on current events, especially if they're of local interest. Every week brings multiple "how do you know that?" moments, haha..

What is lists and how do I use it?

You go to your profile, scroll down, and select Lists. Then you create a list, name it, and give it a description. After that, you can add twitter profiles to those lists you made and organize them however you want. When you access a list, only those accounts tweets will show up. You can add/remove people from lists anytime and you can even do it directly from their profile page by clicking on the gear icon.

Wouldn't it be easier to just stop following the accounts I don't want to show up?

Well, you may want to remove someone from a list if they aren't really fitting with the theme of your list. It's just for organization so you can customize what you want to see at that time. You may want to still follow them and see their tweets elsewhere in a different list or on your timeline. Also, the more people you follow, the more crowded and harder-to-follow your timeline becomes.

Google+ is definitely the best platform. Unfortunately, it has an unfair stigma associated with it because of Google's hamfisted approach to making people use it. If I could wave a magic wand to make Facebook disappear and everyone had to use G+ in its absence, I truly believe they'd greatly prefer it.

Yeah, I'm noticing it's pretty hard to follow my timeline as it is. And I hate that I have to manually reload my feed every time I view Twitter on my phone.

Nah. It's just a chat with friends only.

Oh. Yeah, all of my friends have iPhones and they just use iMessage for SMS messages. I'm the only one with an Android phone. Lol.

Exactly! I never liked twitter until I started making lists. Makes it a lot easier to read.

Instagram is the best social network. Straight forward, to the point and focused on photographs. WhatsApp is the best messenger. Platform agnostic and easy to use with just your phone number.

Facebook these days is better as a platform than as a social network - it not nearly as useful when it's not solely focused on college/university networks. They were smart to acquire Instagram and WhatsApp. I wouldn't be surprised if Google somehow eventually acquired Twitter.

Facebook. I stay connected to old friends while also making new ones. Sounds completely crazy, I know!

If your Facebook experience is shitty, it´s entirely your fault. Block people you don´t like, hide stuff you don´t want to see, it´s not that hard. I also visit it only once or twice a day for a couple of minutes.

I use Twitter exclusively to subscribe to nonsense accounts, I never post myself, it´s merely for entertainment.

It sounds like you're more bored with your friends then you are Facebook. I don't think changing to Twitter or Instagram is going to change anything if all you're going to do is follow the same people that bore you on Facebook.

What's wrong with some of you? Of course social media doesn't replace real life.

Anyway.
For personal stuff and keeping up with old friends and family its facebook.
For breaking news and updates its easily twitter.
For work and networking for work its LinkedIn.

So there isn't really one best social media for everything.

After all these years I still find Twitter to be one of the better social networks.

If I do should I control myself to not look at everyone's statuses/updates? If I'm not reading all of them then why would I bother posting anything on there?

Eh just make sure to use muting extensively and you won't feel so overwhelmed. Muting by source, hashtag, user, etc... I always make sure to use hashtags when I live-tweet so people don't hate me.

Also like most social networks, Twitter is what you make of it. Follow interesting people and you'll get interesting tweets.

Twitter is more about timeliness than thoroughness. People who use it heavily probably don't try to read every post from everyone they follow - they likely skim the most recent posts in their feed and maybe use search to find out more about things that catch their eye. That's what I do, anyway.
