What's like Colony Wars ?

Can any of my fellow Gafees recommend a space shooter that's like Colony Wars? I have Dreamcast , PS2 , Xbox , Wii , XBOX 360 , PSP and DS. Sorry for such a simple question.
Star Trek Invasion is your game if you haven't played it already. It's made by the same people that made the Colony Wars games and was released on the PS1. Since you have a PS2 you could easily play it.

"WHEN I WAS VERY YOUNG..."

Great series. Too bad Sony will never chance a resurrection. Of all the arcade space combat games, nobody did room-shaking explosions like Colony Wars. Seriously, when you blew a cap ship up, it was like the universe cracked in two.

I wouldn't be so sure that they won't resurrect it. Warhawk only had 1 game before the recent PS3 version, it went through most of the PSone generation and all of the PS2 generation without a sequel. So it could happen. Sony's got many franchises that should be brought back.

One of the first games I rented for the PSX was Colony Wars, after finding a "secret" demo on the demo disc that came with the system. I love this series (though I never did play 3... the bad reviews scared me off).

Which was weird, as there's no oxygen in space nor would you hear anything.[/git]

Hmm... no, I don't know what game you mean. There were a few 3d space games for DOS PC as late as 1997, but 'also on PSX' and 'not that good'? Not sure. There were PSX versions of Wing Commander 3 and 4 and MechWarrior 2 (though an arcadified version), but those games were good to great on the PC. G-Police? That's about the only other one I know of...
Darklight Conflict was the name of the game I was referring to.

both vids are from the PSX version

Ah, I didn't know there was a PSX version of that game... it was okay, on the PC at least.

Freesapce 2 is without peer in this genre. TIE Fighter is a pretty distant second, though still a great game.

Probably agreed... if you switch TIE Fighter and Freespace 2's positions, that is. :) TIE Fighter is the best space sim ever.

I was wondering why they were so similar... I thought they just did a good job of copying Colony Wars......I was young......

so this Warthog team also did the Battlestar Galactica game huh....... I might try to pick it up....

Speaking of Colony Wars....thinking of a PS3 version.. I can think of two routes Sony could take.....

If for some reason the original team is not working on the game I can see....

1. Factor Five working on the game..... stating the obvious...... Epic title, strong single player campaign, great music, unbelievable graphics....yada yada.... would be a true Colony Wars title for the PS3
it has to be 60fps Factor 5!!

2. If it is true that Microsoft is trying to nab the StarWars License......there would not be a BF game for the PS3... I can see Sony countering this with a Colony Wars game that uses the Warhawk engine..... that has Space dogfights...and allows you to land in an enemy ship and duke it out Battle Front style........

I would personally prefer a Mass Effect style game but with true space exploration and action based around the Colony Wars Universe......

none of this will probably happen and we should be fortunate to even get the PSX Colony Wars on PSN

I never did get to play the PC lucas space sim games...have always wanted to but at the time I didn't have a flight stick and my PC couldn't handle it...so I'd have to go with Freespace just due to the fact that I have actually played those games

Darklight Conflict was an awesome looking game, and I loved the gameplay...but it wasn't close to being a "Best of the genre" type of deal. I particularly loved the manual docking you had to do after every mission. The game, as I previously said, was one of the last advanced DOS games before gaming moved onto Windows...and IIRC it was entirely software based rendering as well. The PC version had great controls and the PSX version (that I later purchased) was not the best port IIRC (controls took a hit and visuals had a low framerate, worse textures, game lost the almost voxel-like quality of the visuals and was cluttered with tons of low polygon models with obvious seams...if memory serves correctly). To be honest, I don't remember the music...so I'm unsure if the music in those videos was added by the person who posted them or if those western tunes are actually from the game.

When I was playing this game, I was also playing through Wing Commander Prophecy...which was another awesome space flight game...and I was basically in space sim bliss...nearly a week after I finished Wing Commander Prophecy, Freespace came out...and I was absolutely floored. Later on, I bought Colony Wars and didn't see what any of the fuss was about. So...meh...

edit: Outside of Factor 5's first GC game (Rogue Leader?), I haven't enjoyed any of their flight games...they all have a same-y feel to them...I'd hope they stay out of the Space Flight genre, personally.

Tarr Chronicles looks fantastic but from what I've heard it's supposed to be pretty bad gameplay-wise, which is a shame.

I like all the Colony Wars love in this thread. It is definitely one of my favorite PS1 games. The closest thing to it that I've played is TIE Fighter, which I like even more, although it's less arcadey.

Rogue Leader on GameCube is also similar to Colony Wars, though less epic.

Colony Wars was too freakin' difficult for me to enjoy after the first slew of missions.

Man up!

Although it's far from the greatest game i've ever played, X-Wing Alliance is still the most i've EVER enjoyed playing through a game, something about my Star Wars nerdiness at that time coupled with buying a new PC just to play it just made me lap up every single moment of it.
