What's next for Naughty Dog; New IP or Uncharted PS4?

They will make Uncharted 4 for PS4, and my money's on it being revealed at this E3 for a release not too far behind the PS4's. Sony will want to avoid their past mistake of launching the PS3 with lackluster games. After Uncharted 4, I wouldn't be surprised if they came up with another new franchise besides The Last of Us.

Bend stated that they don't want to expand and so working on the portables is what they can do with a small team like theirs. They're pretty much Sony's top portable studio considering Uncharted GA and R:R. I'd say Sony is full aware of their importance and strength, given that they were chosen to make pretty much the biggest Sony Vita title.

You're right, sorry I'm just having a moan. Huge Syphon Filter fan here and I know the series is more or less dead, I just have trouble accepting it :( Oh well as long as they are all still together making games that's good.

I think they're working on Uncharted 4 right now as a PS4 exclusive. It'll be released within possibly the first year of the console's release, two years max. After that Naughty Dog will wipe their hands clean of the Uncharted franchise and move on to something new.

They're already launching one new IP basically now, so I don't think you'd see their next big title for another 2 years.

However, you have to go with the pattern. 3 Crashes, then a Crash racing. 3 Jaks, then a Jak racing.

Unkarted is coming. Believe.

Here is another thought that I would kill for, if you know Legacy of Kain then you know that for the most part Amy was the writer for the franchise.

I would love if Naughty Dog next IP is a vampire game, something really brutal, dark and filled with twists like how Legacy of Kain was, a game where I control a Vampire and fight demons or other vampires in a hack n slash HUB based open world game or something

I thought the general tradition for Naughty Dog was 3 games in a newfranchise then sort of a spin off entry (lol unkarted) each generation, however replacing unkarted with The last of Us kind of leaves that in arms.

I will be disappointed if their next game is Uncharted, especially since they abandoned poor old Jak.

Now the way I've always seen it, is that Naughty Dog's games have maturer over time and accompanied players with them. I just hope it doesn't reach Heavy Rain levels by their game following the last of us.

Since Knack is coming as the PS4's first platformer, I guess it would be ideal to make a Uncharted 4 for PS4, but I don't see any announcements at E3. Maybe at the Spike VGA awards they could release the bomb.

I'm more interested if or when they release info on the next premier SCEW title. I'm really curious who will unveil their title at E3, and hopefully I won't be disappointed.

You should know that there aren't two "distinct" teams within ND.

Yes there are.

“The idea has always been to create two fully independent teams so that they can operate independently of one other and nobody has to be flopping back and forth from week to week or servicing two different games,” explains Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells. This way, the teams could focus all of their energy into individual projects. But before it could expand, Naughty Dog needed additional resources, and that’s where publisher and parent company Sony comes in.

However, they do share tech. Also:

"We do something very spatial at the office," he explains. "We didn't want to have a team A and a team B, so all the designers sit together, no matter what project they're working on. So it's all inter-mingled - the programmers the same thing, the animators and the environment artists also.

tl;dr :

There are two teams. If you are on one team you won't cross-over or flip-flop between projects. Tech is shared. Furthermore, each department sits together. (All artists sit together etc. independent of team to create unified culture, working space is shared.)

Isn't the A-team the one making The Last of Us? At least that was my impression.

There is no 'A' or 'B' team. Just two teams. Uncharted 3 suffered from time-constraints. The Last of Us has been in development for three and a half years.

New ip hopefully. The uncharted 3 team will portably do uncharted 4 while the last of us team will do the new ip.

They made Last of Us as a new IP, so Uncharted 4 is their next game on PS4.

I think they will show it next June.

You're expecting them to reveal their next game in June 2014? I can't see that happening. Sony are going to be dogging them furiously to get some sort of tease out this year to inspire people to adopt the PS4.

It'll likely release at the end of next year, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's initially given a summer launch window (that slips).

No company is ever going to admit they have an A and B team.

Uncharted 4 is already in development. It will becoming out for the PS4 and it will be their first game for it. Lead by the same people behind Uncharted 3. Its Sony's big IP now.

TLOU was revealed around the time UC3 released.

What about it makes you think it was terrible? It didn't have the flashy setpieces of the console games, but I found the actual gunplay and encounter design to be much better in GA than it was in UC3.
Personally, it felt like a claustrophobic shooting gallery that had no deviation in gameplay and mechanically every moment felt like the last. The story was frankly just massively disappointing and kinda stupid. It just felt like a third person shooter, non of the console titles ever seemed to "just feel like a shooter." Finally, it was a slave to the early gimics. Say what people will about the similar implantation of the six axis for Drake's Fortune, the first Uncharted never felt as hollow as GA. It was the reason I bought a Vita and also my biggest disappoint of 2012.

If any other studio other then ND makes Uncharted 4, sales will die by probably 30%-50%.
I am sure their next game is U4. But then is Amy getting tired of it? Neil and Bruce were tired of Uncharted after the second game, and for ND to keep these guys they had to let them do a new IP. I know Uncharted is her baby but at some point I guess she will want to make something new.

Funny, I felt the exact same way about Super Mario 3D land when I got my 3DS. It didn't live up to any of the previous console line entries and I walked out disappointed.

I realized my expectations were too high (but of course the mixture with NSMB series infuriated me which should have stayed far away from my 3D series).

As for uncharted, I never finished a single game besides owning all of them. The farthest I ever got was in Golden Abyss but I never was too connected with the series.

I would be happy for you guys if the series returned on the PS4, but I want more 3D platformers for the next playstation.

Hopefully, Insomniac comes in with a new Ratchet and Clank that brings in fresh new ideas while staying true to the main series.

I would hope they have begun some work on Uncharted 4 so they can get it out close to the 1st year of PS4, then they can think about The Last of US sequel or a new IP. I would like an Elena or Chloe spin off game maybe on Vita, but not so sure that would be a great financial risk.

Prediction:

Uncharted and Last of Us alternated until near the end of the generation, with the possible exception of one series bombing or a digital title.

We'll get a Uncharted 4 where Elena is even more plastified?

I would love to see a new IP from ND, but with TLOU on the stairs, I think it'll be too early to launch a third franchise. Uncharted 4 fits nicely with PS4 as well.

If the playstation 4 announcement is an indicator they will probably be making a new uncharted of The last of us 2. I was kinda baffled they didn't ditch killzone and have guerrilla release a new ip. It seems like the beginning of playstation will be the same old stuff and some 3rd party new ip.

I stand corrected, thanks.

I would have guessed that that lower level (programmers, artists etc) employees will be in separate teams but the heads responsible for oversight may be shared. For example, their lead programmer, Travis Mcintosh, was featured in the behind scenes from Uncharted 3 and now in TLoU.

Haven't they already expressed that they are not interested in being a studio that just churns out Uncharted games? I'm convinced they'll end up with a new IP next to Uncharted and The Last of Us.
Sony also isn't really the type of publisher that will force a developer to milk a franchise dry. They have been quite receptive and supportive to any good pitch of a new IP, if the last generation is any indication.

They're confirmed to be working on a new IP. It's been in development since 2010 they even started a new studio to build it.

ND changed the whole new IP at the start of a new PlayStation by giving us the new IP now. I expect Uncharted 4 to be announced this year for PS4. Sony is going with the opposite approach they did with PS3; instead of new IP's like Motorstorm and Resistance SCE is giving us sequels with a touch of new IP's. Yoshida mentioned growing studios (2-3 teams), I think that's really smart. Plus Ready at Dawn is make a new IP and their like the next Naughty Dog anyways. Hype!

I'd imagine Uncharted '4' (I can't imagine it being called that, more like 'Uncharted: Something Something Something') will be timed for Christmas 2014. PS4 will be popular enough in 2013 without Uncharted, but the next game arriving for late 2014 would be perfect timing. That would mean they would be working on it now in some capacity. I can see a new IP following that, but not before. That might depend on how TLoU does though.

EDIT: Alternatively, maybe they go with new IP, get their heads around PS4 then bring Drake back in a few years with a full refresh. I could live with that.

Sony will probably expand ND into a megastudio or outsource Uncharted over time. They can't afford to lose top talent there (which is why TLoU exists at all). Build a third team. They are efficient enough and their games sell enough to warrant it. Build until you dilute the games.
so they must be working on Uncharted PS4 and a new IP
