What's Next for Naughty Dog?

Now that Uncharted 4 is getting it's stand alone DLC and Last of Us is getting a second act for Ellie and Joel. I can see The Last of Us Part II being their last game for the PS4, then maybe a stand alone DLC akin to Left Behind. By the time they are released it can be safe to say that the PS5 will be right around the corner.

As much as I love Uncharted and The Last of Us, I really want to see another IP from them. Maybe branch out a little. Yes the studio has changed dramatically over the years. PS1 era focusing on platforming (Crash Trilogy) and multiplayer games such as Crash Bash and CTR, PS2 era blending open worlds, platforming, and collecting with Jak and Daxter. The PS3 and PS4 have focused on wide-linear story driven games. Personally I would love to see a game with the graphics and art style of their PS3/PS4 era games but with a vast world to explore. Let the story take a back seat for a bit.

What do you think is next for Naughty Dog? What do you want to see from the in the future?

I think they will continue with these narrative focused games. I can't see them go back to mascot platformers ever again. They actually said no.

I'd love a futuristic sci-fi setting of sorts. Or something in the deep past.

I think they will leave UC behind after the DLC and will focus on a new ip. I dont know how realistic it is for that game to be for the PS4, however.

There was a slight mention at some point that they considered a fantasy game. I would love a fantasy story that is as carefully crafted as a TLOU is.

There's enough open world games elsewhere. Sony have like three or more of them internally alone (Horizon, Days Gone, inFamous).

Naughty Dog should keep with wide-linear. I prefer the gameplay loop of TLOU to Uncharted as the former is richer, that should be their focus going forward (and making 60fps the new standard come next-gen). I love that God of War is being done as one long un-cut camera-take that lasts XX hours, maybe ND should jump on that.
Though it seems like 'as-a-service' titles are grabbing more and more ground these days.

Finally Ewan McGregor and Zoe Saldana's ticket into video games.

Methinks that TLoU2 will really be the last game, at least at Naughty Dog. Neil is going to definitively end the story of Joel and Ellie so they can't go back to them, even if they wanted to. Definitive end.

What is next I don't know, they've just announced 2 projects in development, one very early, shipped a huge game half a year ago. I think they're busy as it is.

What I want is the exact opposite of what you suggest. Preferably cold war era, covert agent behind the iron curtain setting.

I wouldn't say for certain TLOU pt2 DLC is going to be their last game on PS4, after all they weren't afraid to release TLOU on PS3 months before the PS4 launched when Sony could have easily held the game back and made it a PS4 launch title.

That said maybe a change in setting like Sci fi would be nice, go crazy with their imagination instead of being grounded.

I could see them doing something small quick and fun next just to take a quick break from all these epic heavy games. Thinking of something like a rockstar table tennis.

For as busy as they are, you know damn well they have people behind the scene working on what's next even if they have two projects working. I can see them shifting the group working on The Lost Legacy to "their next project" after that wraps up.

This is Naughty Dog, they are always busy but manage to work on a secret side project.

They should do like guerilla and try some other genre, the 3rd person adventure is done for.

I don't really consider the recent ND games adventure games. They're 3rd person shooters with stealth and light environmental puzzles and I mean light.

I doubt it. Not until after The Lost Legacy I think.

There may be ideas floating around but I'd be surprised if there is something in active development.

The smaller team will finish the expansion and get split between TLoU 2 and pre-production for a new game.

That's what I'm saying.

When I say they are working on a their next project I don't mean active development. Brain storming is what I was getting at.

They are now a two party studio, so active development after The Lost Legacy is a given. That doesn't stop them from conceptualizing their potential new game. The Last of Us was being thought of after Uncharted 2 while Uncharted 3 was handed to someone else.

They need to try out their hand at Action RPG's. With their story-telling prowess and phenomenal character development, they'd be perfect.

Since they are starting to focus more with Open areas with Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy, they should go open world with their next game while they are at it as well.

This industry needs more Naughty Dog. A lot more.

After TLOU Part II, I am sure we will get a new IP.

Sci-Fi? Fantasy? Whatever it is it will be amazing so... Bring it on!

Edit: I would love an Action RPG by them.

I'll eat whatever ND dishes up.

But if I could choose, I'd like something without a 2, 3, 4 or 5 (or their Roman equivalents) at the end of the title.
