What's the best cover based shooter?

Gears certainly brought the genre to the masses but who has perfected the mechanic?

I imagine vanquish is going to get spoke about a lot in this thread and although I think it's a good game I personally think other games have been better. I personally don't enjoy the shooting in vanquish

For me personally I think it's the TLOU. I absolutely love the fact there is no cover button in that game. You can can really flank and out manoeuvre the enemies in that game which is all driven by the excellent cover mechanic. Some people are going to disagree as I know people take issue to the shooting in that game, but personally I really love the deliberately weighty shooting.

Gears of War has perfected the formula. It's the definitive version, like Call of Duty is for FPS.

(Gears of War is really good, though)

Gears of War by an enormous distance.

Don't muddy the argument though. Is it the best TPS? That's up for debate.

But is it the best cover-shooter? Yes, by a huge distance.

Gears, it's perfected the cover-shooter. I'm really happy movement has became far more encouraged with shooters now though, as I find the former really boring after nearly every shooter last gen being a cover-shooter.

Edit: actually Rainbow Six: Siege is the best, forgot how good of a cover-shooter it is. Gears is still king of TPS cover-shooters though.

Gears of War, simply because no other game integrates cover into the movement as well as it does. It almost always feels stiff and clunky, or completely unimportant. If you say Mass Effect is a better game, that's your opinion and I might agree. But the cover is a little stiff feeling and isn't required for all class builds. Vanquish? Cover isn't needed nearly as much.

I really wish more cover shooters did cover as well as Gears. Though I could do with less wall bouncing in MP.

Gears is really clunky and basic IMO. There are games that do more with the formula and have more interesting mechanics, like Vanquish, TLOU, Max Payne 3, etc.

Everything is built around cover in Gears of War.

You've enemies you can pick up and use as cover, shields you can plant to erect cover, constantly shifting cover, monsters that force you into cover, adversaries that bypass cover, weapons that go underneath or above cover, you can pull people over cover, seemleslly mantle over cover to be aggressive and attack enemies in cover...

And most importantly, it's movement mechanics are completely built around cover... with wall-cancels and bounces becoming staples of the series.

Vanquish isn't really about playing it like a typical cover shooter, so that could have something to do with you not enjoying it as much. Personally, I've yet to play a better TPS.

Gears was amazing at the time but its too damn slow for its own good these days. Even the modern ones are still rely to much on "stop and pop"

I think its a RE4 situation where games that came after it learned lessons from it and make the originator hard to go back to.

Cover is the gimmick in Gears but I prefer shooters where cover is just part of a bigger combat picture that relies on mobility and positioning. Uncharted 4, Tomb Raider, Vanquish, Division etc...

What even defines a cover based shooter? Is it a game where you have a "glue yourself to cover" mechanic? I like Vanquish and MGSV a lot but I don't know if I'd call them "cover-based shooters."

It weirds me out to break the genre down in those terms. It'd be like going "What's the best fighting game with OTG juggles?"

Gears 4 is the best one so far for me. The controls seems a lot snappier than past Gears, which makes the experience seem a lot more fluid.

Did you just suggest that Call of Duty perfected the FPS? Joke post? There are ALOT of FPS games which have done shooting MILES better than CoD.

I see it as any tps that utilises cover as a core mechanic to its game play.

Gears doesn't rely on mobility now?

In terms of mechanics and general "feel" of the combat imo Mafia 3 had some of the best.

The animations/physics and feeling of its combat is top notch.

50 Cent Blood on the Sands.

...though I can't remember much of the Covering and should've to use Fiddy Time more.

Gears of War 3. It's just PERFECT. The King of TPS. Gears is the game every other TPS based their gameplay.

If you want pure cover based shooting I honestly don't think any series does it better than Gears.I honestly forgot how good the shooting/cover in those games feel until I played through 4 a couple months ago.
