What's the Best Metroid Tune?

uncleslappy

nethack is my favorite dark souls clone
Metroid is my favorite series, and the music is a huge part of what makes it great. The first game especially would not have been able to sell its creepy, sci-fi world without the creepy sci-fi tunes.

Below are what I consider the best in the series. What is your favorite?

Metroid NES:
Title Theme:
Brinstar
Kraid's Lair
Ending/Credits

Super Metroid:
Title Theme
Brinstar
Norfair

Metroid Fusion:
Title Theme
Neo Ridley Boss Theme

Metroid Prime:
Title Theme
Menu Select Theme
Phendrana Drifts

Metroid Prime 2:
Title Theme
Temple Grounds

Other M
Title Theme

My absolute favorite is Kraid's Lair from the original Metroid. Not only is it an excellent piece of music, but it serves to severely differentiate what is essentially level 2 from level 1. It's in a different time signature - 3/4 vs Brinstar's 4/4. It's in a minor key and the beep-boop style makes it feel like you're in a computer fortress compared to the cold, bold, major key adventure music of the previous level. It's a brilliant piece of music that fits like a glove where it sits in the game.

That and the Metroid Prime Title theme. 'Cause that just plain rocks.

Phendrana gets a lot of love and deserves it all but Tallon Overworld is something really special, it sets the mood in a incredible way.

Kraid's Lair deserves the honorable mention on how with a 8 bit console they managed to make such good music.

I can't choose, but Jungle Floor gets me hype every single time. The game starts so eerie and ambient, and then dat Jungle Floor beat fades in and you can't wait to blow space porcupines the fuck up.

Metroid series has some of the best, most atmospheric music in gaming. I love the title themes especially for Metroid, Super Metroid and Metroid Prime. I am a also huge fan of the more ambient and atmospheric tracks like Item Room, Phendrana Drifts and Chozo Ruins. Then there is the classics like Brinstar and my overall favourite Kraid's Lair.

SNES Lower Norfair.

The Prime remix was bad. It was much less dramatic and was used very early in the game. In Super Metroid it was near the end of the game, in the hardest area of the game, it was much more dramatic and made you feel like shit hits the fan.

Phazon Mines - Haunting, ambient, and encapsulating of what the mines are all about. The cold, industrial sound prevailing over the entire game really nails the harsh, unforgiving nature of this area.

Parasite Queen - This song immediately lets you know what Metroid Prime is bringing to the table. Again, the harsh, calculating tone of the music is such a powerful transition from the previous entries, especially when you consider how well it fits the theme of Prime seeming like a huge departure for the series, but retaining so much of what makes Metroid what it is.

Frigate Orpheon - A total inverse of what Parasite Queen and a lot of the other songs in Prime are going for. I always feel at peace when moving through the Crashed Frigate. It's so calming and serene. This is actually one of my favorite Metroid tracks, full-stop.

Phendrana Drifts - It's motherfucking Phendrana Drifts.

Emperor Ing Phase 1 and Phase 2 - The Prime trilogy's music definitely evolved over the course of the three games, moving slowly away from the cold, industrial sound to something much more alien. Prime 2 is the perfect blend of both, and it comes through so well in the boss themes. This one is a great example of a final boss theme. Intense as fuck.

Quadraxis - It's motherfucking Quadraxis

There's plenty more but now I'm just sitting here listening to it all.

Metroid II has an amazing ambient soundtrack for something that was produced on the OG Game Boy in 1991. It uses the GB sound hardware in interesting ways, and gets a bit experimental and weird. There is also a build up with each track as the game continues.

I will say that, low key, Sawken is really, really good. The continuous backing melody keeps a very good pace and maintains interest, much like Serris as I posted above, and the theme overall is very well layered.
