Scylla always creeped me out

Cthulhu has nothing on her

Good answer. I would also nominate them and the top half of a nice mermaid.

Werewolves are great too. The humanoid ones that is. They used to scare when I was a kid when I saw them in movies like the one from the Howling series. The full on wolf ones (as seen in True Blood and Twilight) are a joke.

Also Dragons. Wise, majestic and packing top tier power.

I like that beast that is a beautiful naked maiden but she divides into 7 dogs from the waist down. I forgot her name.

If not that then the Basilisk. Is like a Rooster cross with a snake that kills you if you look at it. They steal the energy from kids on their sleep by swallowing their breath. The only way to get rid of them is to put mirrors all over your house or actually burning your house down

the basilisk is a serpent-like creature, you´re thinking of the cockatrice

I saw the Harry Potter movie on TV last night that had the Basilisk in it.
I also vaguely remember them from the original Baldurs Gate and that they could perma-death your chars. I think?

#1 Kraken
A terrifying force from the deep, massive and awesome when in action. Just imagining some monstrosity rising up from the unknown depths raising its massive tentacles to drag anything down there = Wow. In a way they represent the overwhelming scale of the ocean, and its fearsome power. The fact that they have a beak just makes them cooler.

#2 Dragons
The variety found here is insane. They're some of the most aesthetically impressive creatures around. Multiple headeds, gaping stomach-mouths filled with needle teeth, etc... There's a type of dragon out there for you.

#3 Werewolves
A hulking monstrosity more than the sum of its parts. If it doesn't turn you into meat confetti, you're damned to become one of them on a regular basis. You're either robbed of your life or your humanity, not to mention you become a danger to your family and friends. So you also have an element of tragedy there, especially if a child becomes one of them. Werewolves are horror layered upon horror. My favorite type are the musclebound wrecking machines rather than wolves that talk.

Wish I had this book with me right now. I don't know how many nights I spent growing up reading this thing while I went to bed. Cover to cover dozens of times at least.

Most of the ones mentioned here are pretty awesome.

For me, I guess I'd have to say dragons.... I know it's boring but i really like them.

The mare from Nordic/German mythologies.

This one scares me. I've had sleep paralysis quite a few times before but I don't usually open my eyes because I know these crazy things that people usually see like the shadow person or this. They say it's just all in your head though.
