I'm not sure why but Hydras and other sea monsters scare the crap out of me. Snake hybrid creatures do too [like the gorgon], but I'm not afraid of real snakes.

This one scares me. I've had sleep paralysis quite a few times before but I don't usually open my eyes because I know these crazy things that people usually see like the shadow person or this. They say it's just all in your head though.

I can't say I've ever had the privilege of seeing her pretty face but I've seen my share of shadow / transparent people that disappear the longer I look at them. Sometimes they move, or just stand there, staring at me with their cold, blank eyes.

Any new theories why there are dragons in so many different cultures? I personally think its because of dinosaur fossils.

Personally its all on the Hydra.

This thing doesn't get enough screen time or love (especially in games) in my opinion, it grows back its fucking heads when you cut 'em off.
You can't get much better than that.

Runner up: Chimera

Can't just end your own thread like that, man. lol

The Ashiarai Yashiki is an extremely bizarre Japanese spirit that takes the form of a disembodied leg and foot, many times larger than a normal human and often covered in mud or blood - this frightening being was believed to literally smash its way into the homes of terrified humans and demand them to wash it.
The reason behind this attack was unknown and most likely could never really be understood as spirits such as the Ashiarai Yashiki were believed to be governed by laws far beyond human understanding, yet even by Japanese mythology standards the Ashiarai Yashiki stands out as one of the more unique monsters of folklore and despite being little more than a giant foot it was capable of human speech.

“We are as ignorant of the meaning of the dragon as we are of the meaning of the universe.”
- Borges.

Personally I think the Ink Monkey or Hochigan were always fascinating ones.

Borges also wrote a small anthology of creatures called The Book of Imaginary Beings about various monsters and the like if anybody is curious.

I don't know if I love anything more than looking at stuff like this. Like, I can read the pages of these things on wikipedia for hours.

Werewolves

Honorable mentions: Mermen & Incubi.

Bro fist for werewolves...

but fuck True Blood werewolves. They fucking suck. They're just a bunch of meth head assholes that turn into junkyard dogs.

Teen Wolf werewolves, at least the Alphas can shift into terrifying pants-shitting demon things. Well, at least the first one.

Also, I've always been haunted by the idea of the Wendigo from First Nations mythology... never was a fan of endless forests.

And endlessly hungry spirit/demon cursed to haunt the woods forever because in desperation... it had fed on human flesh. Now its hunger never ceases and it is always on the lookout for food. According to wikipedia, there's even a real (sorta) thing called 'Wendigo Psychosis'.

The term "wendigo psychosis" (also spelled many other ways, including "windigo psychosis" and "Witiko psychosis") refers to a condition in which sufferers developed an insatiable desire to eat human flesh even when other food sources were readily available,[15] often as a result of prior famine cannibalism.[16] Wendigo psychosis has traditionally been identified by Western psychologists as a culture-bound syndrome, though there is a debate over the existence of phenomenon as a genuine disorder. The theory was popular primarily among psychologists in the early 1900s, and may have resulted from a misinterpretation of northern Algonquian myths and culture.[17]

Idk, she looks rather happy to see it ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

"Oh, Great Unwashed One! How... unexpected of you to drop in... through the new roof"

Jackalopes are interesting because they are based on reality. There is a virus that causes horn like growths to grow from the heads of rabbits which look very similar to early depictions of the animal. I've seen pictures, its ugly as hell.

Japan has a lot of really strange mythological creatures.

Namazue: Catfish that cause earthquakes

Mikoshi-nyudo: A creature that grows taller the more you look at it.

Rokurokubi: A creature with an extremely long neck that loves gossip.

Kasha: Cat monster that eats corpses before they are cremated

Waraime: A giant laughing woman.

Yanari: Imps that make creaking sounds in houses

Makura-gaeshi: A monster that moves your pillow as you sleep (DAMN HIM)

Oh man, it is absolutely the Minotaur. It is pure masculinity, unadulterated strength, unmitigated sex. Just pass your eyes across this beast:

Those are appendages that say "I give zero fucks - I can open a tight jar like nothing else". The Minotaur was the Wasp of his era, it's no mistake they looks eerily similar with their oversized glassy eyes and 'fuck-you' 1000yd stare.

Take note of the Taurus attributes; the horns, the hooves, the snout. He can clip clop his way over any ground. What's that, fire on the ground or broken glass? He gives no fucks.

Those horns? They're not just for looks or for snide remarks about honking if you're horny (though in that particular pose, make no mistake, he is there to fuck bitc... cows and get mon... milk). When they strafe sideways into a tavern after a night of raping and pillaging, no one short of a Viking King questions why they're there.

Even when getting tea-bagged there is more to admire about the Minotaur than all of the other soft mythological creatures mentioned combined. How many of them were the guardians of an almighty maze, eh? That's right. That motherfucker Cthulu went sliming its way back into the ocean after glancing at the mighty Minotaur*.

So to answer your question and refute you pissy arse answer OP, the Minotaur is unmistakably the greatest (ain't no 'best' about it either. Best is a word worthless goody two-shoes' like the Pegasus or the Phoenix use) mythological creature of all time.

Jesus, that thing is supposed to make water into wine, also walks on water and it can resurrect itself.

I have no doubt it could change water into whiskey as well.
