• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

What's the GAF consensus on the best Wii JRPG available right now?

Want to play a JRPG. I've played everything except ES on my PS3, so I turn to the Wii. Looks like a fucking wasteland.

Looks like we have:

  • Tales of Symphonia 2: Dawn of the New World
  • Fire Emblem I suppose
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time oh god
  • Opoona

I'm probably going to go with Tales. Is there anything I'm missing that I should buy instead? I'm actually kinda excited about Tales, but am I pretty much done after that?

EDIT I don't speak Japanese

EDIT 2 I was really hoping I was missing some stuff WTF

Yeah, I have nothing against Fire Emblem but really I'm looking for a more traditional JRPG. Still, I'll probably pick it up. But I think of those three I'd pick Tales first, mostly because I liked ToV so much.

ToV >>>> TOS2
But
TOS2 skits >>>>> TOV Skits

Opoona is a lifestyle RPG. The player must adapt to a new environment, meet new people, get a job, all while becoming aware of the precious world and people surrounding him.

Doesn't sound like my kind of thing unfortunately. I'll add it to the OP though.

the only masterpiece is FE: Radiant Dawn

Tales is a good game, but nothing more. It's better than his prequel (that i find horrible), at least

Rune Factory Frontier is really awesome, both in the action RPG part with exploration and even combat. but it's not a pure action rpg, it's an Harvest Moon game so there's a big farming gameplay too

Opoona is bad, it offers some of the DQ style, but i liked it anyway

Didn't like Chocobo Dungeon :/

the next months are going to be great: Shiren and Muramasa in Autumn and Arc Rise Fantasia, Fragile and Crystal Bearers in Winter :D

also there's Little King's Story, that Marvelous classified as a RPG, that have something about rpgs (not much anyway) but it's AWESOME

Well in that case Dawn of the New World is really your only choice. But I really can't recommend it to you, especially if you've already played Vesperia (DotNW is crappy enough but going back to sub-Abyss gameplay is really hard).

I'd take all these Fire Embelm reccommendations with a grain of salt.

I've played a ton of SRPGs before, but that game is fucking HARD. And I normally like hard. I just think when reccommending it, people should be sure to mention the fact that most people who play it will find it WAY too difficult to make any significant progress in.

I'm coming off of Demon's Souls...so, hard is relative.

None of the US released Fire Emblem games are hard. They just ask that you don't suck while playing them.

Err, it's a lifestyle RPG insofar as there are jobs that you can take on, but I wouldn't call Tales a lifestyle RPG because you can cook food. Opoona is good fun and it's dirt cheap to find anywhere :(

Honestly, though, if you're looking for already released jRPGs, you're on the wrong (two) system(s). Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon are probably the highest profile jRPGs released this generation. TLR continues SaGa, if you're into that. You've already tried Enchanted Arms, but there's also Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia (it's not clear if the PS3 version will get a US release although I'd guess yes). Star Ocean 4.

Over the next 12 months, PS3 probably has a slight advantage; White Knight Chronicles as well as support from the z-tier jRPG developers (Trinity Souls, Zill o'll ox9soiio, Last Rebellion, etc)

It sounds like you're set for your console buying, so I'd suggest retreating to the DS, where the great ones are.

I never played SRPG before Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and never played roguelike before FFF: Chocobo's Dungeon. Played both on Wii and both pretty much became my portal to the genres, so I suggest those two.

Well, see I've played all the 360 JRPGs already except IU and SO4. I've owned a 360 or two in the past. So I have those covered.

I have a DS, but truth be told I'm just not much of a portable gamer. Still, I've played FF3 and 4, TWEWY, Suikoden and a few others I think.

There's some PS2 stuff I haven't played of course because of the sheer size of the library, but no BC on my PS3 dampens my enthusiasm a bit. I don't have a PS2 anymore.

what's the best WRPG released for the Wii?

trick question

opoona has some really good parts, with an actual original world and art-style. it unfortunately botches a potentially brilliant combat system with uneven difficulty and a lack of interesting party customization options.

i played it a good part of the way through, and certainly had some fun with it. combat is more-or-less atb, but the main attack mechanic has you flinging stuff at targeted enemies with other enemies constantly moving and potentially getting in the way of your "shots". you're woring on timing and getting trajectories right.

it has an almost-good one-handed control scheme too.

secret of mana was a lot of fun with two players, but it has some enormously infuriating bugs that caused us to abandon it.

does ARF use the pointer at all? it's a tragedy that no one is really leveraging the interface for these games.

Here it is, the big list of Wii RPGs, compiled from various sources, with release date information from GameFAQs.

Each article contains the best known variation of the game title, the name of the developer, the U.S. age restriction, and the regions where, when, by whom and under what title the game was or will be published.

Please note that just because a game isn't yet listed for a certain region, doesn't mean it won't be published in that region. With independent developers, deals with publishers may not be sorted out until development is almost finished.

Every game on this list has been published or has been confirmed to be in development.

I have used my own judgment as to which games to include on the list. Clearly I don't own nor have I played all of these. If you feel certain games don't qualify as RPGs, or that other titles should be added, feel free to let me know.

Dates are month/day/year.

I guess Tales is what I'm looking for. I'll probably try FE after that.

You'd think the Wii would be the console to get for JRPGs, given the install base and the lower cost of development. What the hell happened.

handhelds and a general lack of innovation/risk-taking on consoles? wrpgs jumping from pc to consoles and stealing a bit of the jrpg thunder in the west? no final fantasy or dragon quest yet this gen on consoles? one of the most highly regarded console rpgs of the past year or so is on the ps2?

There's a handful of really good Gamecube RPGs to try out if you haven't played them already. Paper Mario 2, Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos 1 & 2.
