Whats the most optimised game engine?

The gaming engine that resides inside my 4090 😎

I'm sorry loll.. That's the first thing that popped into my mind that as no relevancy whatsoever with this thread.. Just thought it was funny.

But yeah naughty dog and insomniac are really up there imo but there's quite a few others too.

said already a million time before but Idtech seems to be the most optimised but it's geared towards a certain kind of game which I suppose is the whole point of optimisation. Is it the most flexible/versatile engine? Who knows. Maybe once we get a game on it that isn't Doom, Wolfenstein, Rage, etc we'll find out. As long as ID keep making first person shooters then IdTech looks like it will be powerful enough for them.

not enough love for Decima and whatever the name is for Insomniac games engine
Decima is a good engine but nothing amazing. Horizon Forbidden West looks great and Death Stranding was smooth as butter (not that it had much happening at any point) but I wouldn't say it's anywhere near being the most optimised engine.

As good as DS/FW look I don't think they will be able to push the visuals of the engine much further and performance wise it's already struggling.

Blizzard's inhouse engine for Overwatch.
It runs on a potato while maintain good graphics and frame rate.
Afaik it's not even an "engine" used in other games, but it's called Prometheus. Maybe they put in some existing Blizzard libraries innit (netcode and whatnot), it's proprietary code written from the ground up. Fit for purpose.

Frostbite in BF2042, not a lot of game engines could offer 128 players on one map with destruction and still works so flawlessly.

If we're including all generations I'd like to toss in the Slavedriver engine from Lobotomy Software (Saturn), DF Retro did a great video on them. They did DN3D, Quake, and Powerslave.

Team Andromeda too with their Panzer Dragoon engine. PD Zwei and PDS look stunning. Team Andromeda said that PDS was as optimized as you could possibly get on the Saturn. Still impressive to this day.

Team Ninja have great engines. Dead or Alive games have always been excellent, great visuals, very quick loading.

Yeah Id tech.
It's crazy how good Doom Eternal looks on my 1050ti laptop while running at 60fps

Honorable mention to whatever modified version of Unreal The Coalition uses. I'm not the biggest fan of the new gears game but they do look amazing and run really well on low end hardware.

The one they used for Tomb Raider 2013 amazed me back then and still today due to it's scalability, at least in this game. There was everything between 30 and 150fps possible on Hardware back then without touching the resolution, not counting SSAA. You could throw the visuals back years and run it on a potato or make it a damn fine looking game for 2013.

The game also never crashed once for me.
