For me it would probably me Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb, especially the version from Live 8.

Probably tied with Nessun Dorma

EDIT: Actually I just watched Nessun Dorma again and that wins.

Man is it dusty in here...

;__;

Maybe not the most powerful ever, but definitely up there. Three incredibly powerful verses, the first about being an immigrant, the second about being a child of divorce, and the last about being gay in America (of which the artist is none).
The last verse especially is very powerful.

Brother Ali - Tightrope

"cause there ain't no flame that can blaze enough//to trump being hated for the way you love//cry yourself to sleep and hate waking up//its cold world ya'll shame on us"

This song always stirs something in me.

It's that huge cathedral organ sound, along with the fact that there's two parts where more of the band kicks in. You get a few more added instruments in the song a little while in, then you get the whole orchestration joining in a bit later in a big buildup.

Arcade Fire - Intervention

Off the same album, Limousine

Hallelujah, none of that watered down cover shit, by the actual master himself:

To be honest I kind of prefer the Jeff Buckley version, Cohen's voice distracts me from the song.

Neither am I religious but I found Seven Swans to be crazy moving.

He will take you
If you run
He will chase you

Sigur Ros has a lot of tracks that would be appropriate for this thread.

Kafari
This one really kicks in when the strings start underneath the twinkling notes

Fljótavík and Straumnes back to back

Good choice. I still reckon its the best song they've done. I'm a sucker for a good build-up.

Brand New - Seventy Times Seven, Okay I believe you but my tommy gun don't, Sowing Season, Deguasser... almost everything they do is awesome

In terms of sheer majesty something like Mount st micheals mix + saint micheals mt would probably fit my bill.

In terms of emotional resonance with songwriting lets not shit ourselves by bright eyes is also pretty damn incredible.

In terms of simplistic beauty I'd have to say Cherry by ratatat.

but, I really have no idea. i can hear a song one day and it will bring me to tears and then hear it the next day and reach for the pause button.

Sia - Breathe Me.

all of you should be ashamed for not listing that song SMH
Oh my god yes, this. Some of Dido's stuff is powerful as well.

Left Outside Alone by Anastacia is awesomely powerful imo, too. Obviously there's the classics like I will Survive by Gloria Gaynor, California Dreamin, the Titanic song, etc.

Pink Floyd has some strong stuff as well, but i'm enjoying looking through this thread and finding great news songs. :D

[EDIT] Oh my how could I have forgotten, Rigoletto 'La dona e mobile' (performed by Nessun Dorma), O Fortuna (Carl Orf), & Lux Aeterna (Clint Mansell).

There are some good songs here. I love some Dream Theater, been a fan of them for a while. I've also thought of some Queen, but that's too easy, Freddie Mercury could make "Happy Birthday" into a powerful song. So, here it is, I suggest these guys to the Dream Theater fans out there. The whole album is an experience, but just one song grips me, every time I hear it.

The band is Porcupine Tree
The album is The Incident
The song is Time Flies

Now listen. I'm a grown man. I sleep on a bed of gravel, eat cinderblocks for breakfast and bench press walruses. But damn it all. I had this song playing in the car and I looked in the rearview at my 3 Y.O. girl gazing out the window, kicking her feet happily and taking in the sights as they whizzed by. I'd be lying to you if I denied getting a little moist in the eyes. You would too, and if not your just a cold hearted zombie.

This is honestly one of the most powerful, emotional songs I've ever heard. I'm not even a huge fan of Tool or anything. Listening to the lyrics and knowing the story behind it, about Maynard's mother... I honestly almost tear up every time, especially at the "Fetch me the Spirit, the Son, and the Father Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended."

Another really powerful one for me:
Sigur Ros - Popplagið
Ever since I saw this live it brings back memories of that amazing concert.

My God yes. I was addicted to this song for months because of just how powerful it is. That climax.
