Whats the point of Supercars?

Because there are no substitutes OP.

I appreciate them for what they are, but I'm more of a luxury car guy. Sitting in traffic or cruising down the highway, I'd rather just be comfortable. Part of me wants a Corvette though.

My uncle has a S65 V12 Biturbo, which is a luxury car...one that has 631 horsepower. It's crazy fast.

Have u ever driven a 500hp civic?

Not a civic, no. But I've driven or rode in plenty of modded cars. As well as plenty of super cars and everything in between. Even ridden in a hyper car.

The difference in feel between a Lamborghini Gallardo and an Audi R8 V10 is substantial and they use the same engine and single clutch transmission.

Civic vs even a Porsche GT3 isn't in the same universe around a track. And the GT3 would probably still give a less noisy, less smelly, less bumpy ride than the modded civic. And the Porsches interior is heads and shoulders better, with a warranty. Even the customer service at the dealer is a vast step up.

It just doesn't compare in any level.

Why didn't you just post a picture of your car? :P

Out of curiosity, what cars do you deem to be "comfortable"?

The '86 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham I drove in high school is probably the best example. Among more modern cars I've driven, I've found the Jaguar XJ and the Cadillac XTS to be exceedingly comfortable. If I had the money, I'd probably get an XJ.

I currently own this '76 Olds.

I appreciate the "feel of the road" in sports cars, but I can also appreciate the complete lack of awareness of the road the land yachts provide.

What's the point of anything really.

Exactly. What's the point of expensive fine wines when a $2 bottle gets you just as drunk ? What's the point of $300 shoes when $20 shoes protect your feet just as well ?

Why don't we all just use the same boring stuff regardless of our income level ? Why should a Billionaire have nicer things than someone who makes $25K a year ?

Some people like to drive fast and want a car that not only drive fast but want a car that is unique so average joe like us won't buy it (mostly because of the price to get it).

For us, we don't need to buy a very expensive car to feel the speed. They're many car which we can buy at a price that is reasonable.

Supercars give normal people something to strive for.

It's part of the reason I bought a bike. I like the speed and excitement that it gives me, which I'm assuming is as comparable as I'll get to the feeling that a supercar gives.

Here you go then:

0-60 mph in under 4 seconds and even comes with the numb "can't feel shit" steering as well.

This isn't the 90's anymore, the ideology that supercars are not comfortable is so outdated.

Cars like the Audi r8, Ferrari F12, porsche 911 turbo and continental GT speed all offer comfort settings for the road which make them as comfortable and drivable on a daily basis as anything else out there.

Then there are even cars like the Ferrari FF, Porsche panamera Turbo and the Audi rs7 which all offer supercar performance (all do 0-60 in under 3.5 seconds and a mid 11 second 1/4 mile) while very comfortably seating 4 adults in a sea of premium leather and are drivable in all conditions thanks to 4wd systems.

So let's not kid ourselves here.

What have you been in?
I was just playing when I typed that :P
Audi R8, GT3, GTR, GT500, Boss 302, KTM X-Bow, Ferrari California.
The only one I didn't drive was the KTM.

While it's not a supercar I also get to drive a Tesla P85D constantly for work. That'd be the car I'd buy over any of the other ones to be honest.

Ride in style!
I remember your post where someone asked what cars gaffers drove :P

Oh, I'm well aware of what's available. I didn't intend mean that as though I thought comfortable cars were necessarily slow. I do have a tendency to put blinders on to what I don't think I can reasonably purchase. I like pretty much all of those, but all of those cost more than my house. I have had a chance to test drive some unobtainable cars though, like the CTS-V, XJ, and XKR-S, which has a way of sticking with me.

A Continental would be sweet, but I think I'd go with a Phantom, if we are talking high end luxury. I believe the power rating on those is "sufficient."

Sure, you can overclock a mobile i3 processor using liquid nitrogen cooling and maybe eek out a SuperPi benchmark higher than the stock top of the line processor. Then throw a normal game at it and watch it burn down your house.

But a Ferrari will probably burn your house down too.

Man, car posts on non-car forums are always so great!

OP, how are you even asking this?

500hp civics are fun too. Get over yourselves. You are going on on-ramps a lot more than you would ever be tracking a factory 500hp+ car.

the same post even

Came in expecting tons of car pics showing how awesome super cars look, kind of disappointed

Jaguar XJ220 is my dream car. Sure maybe you can mod a car to be better than a super car, but for me it is the combination of speed and looks..

Because why not is my standard answer. They look amazing, and unlike 20k pieces of apparel they actually serve a purpose which helps validate their existence.

OP, are you James May by any chance?

James May loves super cars. He's owned numerous Ferraris, including a 430 and now a 458 Italia which he's selling for a new 488.

The OP is hilariously misinformed and living in the 90s.

I call this Nintendo-complex.

Worse. The OP is living on a different planet. He probably doesn't even know the hood from the trunk.

Status symbol. Most supercars will never be pushed to anywhere near their limits... but they do tug at the emotive heart strings of many, including those that have the ability to afford them, even if not the ability or desire to push them to the point that justifies or validates their functionality.

Fixed that for you.

OP needs to go watch one of those Megafactory documentaries on building a supercar to get an idea of what sort of work that goes into these cars.

Its a little bit different to the work your average garage monkey does tuning your civic.

True but let me fix that for you.

The greatest hypercar of all time, fuck yes. THE hypercar (and that's no hype) and its top speed record stood for over a fucking decade.

And you sit in the fucking middle of the car.

FUCK

The central seating is pretty unique. I can only think of the Contera MD1 that shares that layout.

Supercars are the pinnacle of automotive engineering. They're there so us car people can drool over them, and non-car people can benefit from a wealth of technology trickling down to lower models in the range. Sure, the driver is as likely to be a clueless city trader as an automotive enthusiast, but that's because money and desire don't go hand in hand.

I feel motivated to go and scour some car forums looking for opinions on video games.

Edit: none of the modern stuff captures my heart like the F40 / 959 / Countach triumvirate.

Wow OP

Some supercars are basically works of art, they are just beautiful to look at.

They are also integral when introducing technologies into more main line cars. Lots of this technology is created in F1, take ABS for example. Then the Supercars get ABS, taking that technology modifying it form the track to something that can be more mass produced and used in a road car. That process happens a few more times and next thing you know every new car in the world now has ABS as standard.

Why an XJ220 though? It just looks a bit bland compared to other supercars of its time. Plus they gimped it at the last minute by changing the v12 it was designed to use for a turbocharged v6.
The cx75 that jag concepted a few years ago looked insane, it had a bloody jet turbine! Unfortunately it will never see the light of day :(

I'd wager that a 200hp Civic that had been stripped bare and had some serious work on the brakes / suspension would be even more fun.

Because it was literally built by a bunch of engineers on their fag breaks for shits and giggles. That's awesome.

Thats why I love the new Ford GT also. It was built as a side project too.

This!

There is more to supercars than just high HP numbers.

And let's not forget that many of these ultra tuned 'regular' cars that can actually compete with modern supercars are often not exactly street legal. They may be driven on the streets, but they'll often to have be de-nutted before inspection in order to pass.

Back in the days with the existence of supras and integras, and other highly moddable cars that are able to become modded and have the ability to reach the same or similar power levels of a standard supercar at a fraction of the cost, i always wondered why they were so desired

I mean its not like supercars are known to have to have good interiors, they are crap actually, so why the high price?

to make an example that you can easily understand, lets say your goal is to travel at city-legal speeds. imagine having the choice of a) a good-reliable city motorcycle, and b) to strap an 125cc turbocharged motor on your skateboard.
both achieve city-legal speeds. are they the same?

Some supercars are pure art, in terms of design, engineering, both and very few are a for mof art in the sense that design and engineering fused together to create something magnificent. A harmony of steel and soul, making sweet love to the asphalt as it cruises over it, ever touching it with it's rubber lips. The roar of the engine it's cry of passion, the interior taking it's passengers in a loving embrace.
