Brilliant movie. Got me teary towards the ending.
Yup. This is the only movie I can remember genuinely crying after.

I don't have a picture of that scene but when Sullivan had to leave the girl back in her room forever it was like instant teary-eyed moment for me.

That's not sadness, that's happiness.

You get tears from happiness too.

"Sad" in the sense that a bunch of people devoted their entire lives to making it, but their complete lack of talent caused it to be one of the worst animated films ever made.

The story behind the making of this film is just incredibly depressing.

Good grief. It's tragic. My mouth hit the floor when the box office numbers came out. The numbers weren't even rounded up.

Not a movie, but the Wire and Lost have had some of the saddest and emotional scenes.

Where Wallace comes to mind.

Thinking of movies, Glory was really sad (and awesome).

I was a complete sobbing mess after:

-The Green Mile
-Dear Zachary
-Hachiko
-One of the Kenshin OVAs
where he dies
This was after having just watched 90 episodes of the series.

I easily tear up during movies but the ones mentioned above ruined me.

that Grave of the Fireflies is a powerful sad image :(

but im kinda disappointed in GAF that nobody here have yet mentioned Dog of Flanders.
Believe me, this title is one of the top 3 saddest animes ever.

I was bawling uncontrollably towards the end. Good grief.

I had a loved one I knew I was going to lose really soon, so it hit me hard.

But I found all of those to be easier to watch then this (I know it's TV but lots of other people have already cheated!)

Goddamn.
Can I get a name for this? From the name of the pic, I get: Now_and_Then_Here_and_There

Is that the title of the show?

Not a movie, but this is objectively the most depressing piece of animation ever made.

Yeah, that's the name. It's really, really good. Akitaro Daichi has some incredible work under his belt.

My GF hated me for showing it to her. She cried badly and i had salty eyes too. And she even don't likes anime.

Sad movie.

Remarkably, he's good at comedy and drama about evenly. A very talented dude.

Now and Then, Here and There = saddest anime I've seen.
Jubei-Chan = funniest anime I've ever seen.

But this isn't the anime thread.

Have you read the book? I didn't really think the book was that sad. The movie was a little more sad I guess, but it really didn't effect me too much. It was kind of hard to feel bad for the kid. He brought it upon himself, and they way he treated his family was pretty much horrible.

My vote for saddest movie would go to Big Fish Really hit me hard, the relationship between the guy and his Dad reminded me so much of me and my Dad, plus the acting, writing and directing were all great. Best Tim Burton movie by far.

Paris, Texas and Lost in Translation get me to shed tears every time I watch them. There are way more depressing movies, but those two affect me the most.

Didn't cry, but holy shit that was totally unexpected based on the trailers and commercials.

I agree with many of the previously mentioned like Monster's Inc. (happy tears at the end) and Grave of the Fireflies (sad tears).

Initial reaction to the thread title makes me surprised I'm saying this but it's dawned on me what a powerful film it is...

The Lives of Others.

I should clarify the first (and only) time I saw it I was mightily impressed.

The White Balloon was kind of tragic too.

I was one of the "tough" guys until I saw grave of the fireflies, now any movie with even the most obvious manipulative scenes makes me tear up a little.

With that said I haven't seen a mention of this movie.

I don't know why but I only got halfway through Grave of the Fireflies before I gave up. Their life is depressing, I get it.

Only movie thats made me cry since childhood, for some reason is this
American History X[IMG]
This one also made me lose my shit.

Oh shit, how could I forget The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Awesome film and, whilst it should've been uplifting you can't help but be a little wistful.

Didn't really have the impact on me, because as far as "Gut Punch out of Nowhere" films go, nothing will top My Girl.

it's a short film, but seriously it's great

They did a manga that goes a bit further into the story than the OVA did.
She and the ship survive the fight, and the guy joins the space agency to be on the rescue mission. Turned it into a happy ending.

5 Centimeters per Second.

I must be one of the few people who didn't find Grave of the Fireflies sad enough to cry over, although it was pretty depressing.

Magnolia

Or the 1st half of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance

Honorable Mention: The Good Shepherd, Pan's Labyrinth, or Control

I seem to remember an episode from Fruits Basket, featuring a seahorse, to be impossibly sad for a cartoon about people who turn into animals.

I know it's mentioned so much but the only film to totally and utterly destroy me emotionally was Grave of the Fireflies.

Dancer in the Dark

Yes. The amazing part is that Dancer in the Dark managed to have such a powerful emotional impact despite it's completely ludicrious melodrama story. I was depressed for days after watching that movie.

I can't believe we went 5 pages and no one brought this one up. I suspect most of you have never seen it. Very good movie . . . but fucking depressing.
