What's the worst game you've played recently?

Gears of War 2 - awful, awful characters and the cheesiest dialogue ever, sluggish controls, repetitive gameplay, and then the game locked up on me 20 minutes into it. Traded it for LBP to a fellow GAFfer and that was one of the best decisions I've made recently.

I don't have enough time to finish (sometimes even play) all the good games I buy, I certainly won't play bad ones. So I don't want to declare any of them the "worst" since it would still be a good game.

Edit:
Wait! Far Cry 2 was packed in with my GPU so I tried it. That was really bad.

Farcry 2. At first it seemed like it had potential but the quickly respawning enemy checkpoints, the fact that virtually every person you ran into began shooting at you the moment they saw you, and the forced game mechanics (fixing vehicles and ridiculously fast weapon degredation) completely pulled me out of the game. It was an open world game but it didn't play like one. It sucked out all the enjoyment of exploring the world and I gave up on it pretty early.

Lost planet (ps3). I rarely regret purchasing stuff but that one made me regret.

Same here. I got Lost Planet and Pure during the Best Buy sale and just can't seem to enjoy LP. Pure is pretty decent though. On the plus side, I recently found Uncharted for $10 at a pawn shop and am loving it.

Farcy 2, my god what a bore fest, has to one of the worst games I've played this generation.

I'd have to agree. The fact that it had so much potential makes every second of its gameplay worse...

Resi 5 - The controls ack!!
I just couldn't like it. I took the game back straight away. I liked the controls in REmake aswell, but it just didn't click with me.

Resident Evil 5.

I played RE4 like 5 times, but RE5 doesn't feel like a survival horror game, more like.. just an action game :(

The whole time I played RE5 I kept thinking how it should be in a arcade cabinet with a House of the Dead title above it.

Far Cry 2 - Repetitive shit, annoying driving, respawning checkpoints, and shitty sniperfest multiplayer.

Assassin's Creed - Repetitive shit, boring missions, crap combat. Ubisoft is dead to me now since their games all seem to have seriously fucked up design decisions that ruin them yet they still continue to get high scores.

SFIV - annoying 3d bullshit still does not feel as responsive as the 2D games to me. Could never pull off the moves consistently online like I could in HD Remix. Not sure if it was lag or not but I didn't like it. Pretty game though and I can see how some people would love it.

Viking - Boring, repetitive, unfinished piece of shit. Why does it seem like half the sound effects are missing and fuck you and your mandatory stealth bullshit.

Mercenaries 2 - Ugly, janky, boring ass game. How does this pass as a next gen title. At least I can put in cheat codes and blow shit up with the air-fuel rocket launcher when I get bored. Hopefully Red Faction: Guerrilla fares better.

Infamous (demo) - Love the controls but the fact that the guy is such a pussy is a huge turnoff for me. I can jump from a skyscraper and land unharmed but 2 shots from a rifle kill me. Also getting killed by my own electric power grenade is dumb as hell. I think I'll get Prototype instead since that game makes you an unstoppable badass. When Infamous drops to $30 I'll get it then.

Wow, that's VERY interesting.

I was disappointed with RE5 as well, but for pretty much EVERY reason other than the controls. I seriously never saw issue with them. In fact, I prefer the Type A control scheme over the control scheme in pretty much any action-based shooting game.

My biggest gripe with RE5 is that Capcom took an unforgettable game, RE4, and made it forgettable.

"Recently?"

Resistance 2 - I've already created threads chronicling my disappointment in this game so I don't need to go into too much depth.

AITD - The biggest mistake in modern gaming. How this game was ever released (including its Inferno cousin) is a mystery that should never be solved. The potential this game was incredible but there was literally not a SINGLE thing this title did positively save perhaps the score in some areas.

There are other games I was disappointed with, but this thread is for the worst.

Killzone 2. Was just expecting more I guess. Average at best. Plus the motion sickness I get with it is unbearable.

Same here, just didn't like the weight and movement in kz2. Gorgeous game but gameplay didn't do much for me.

007 QoS was horid all around.

I was dying for a flight action game on ps3 so i picked up hawx but after beating it i don't know that i'll touch it again. the missions were pretty easy and kinda forgettable. i like a few things they did with the game but I just picked up a 360 so i'm gonna try ac6, dead rising and mass effect.

hoping demon's souls doesn't turn up in this thread for me, i have it on the way.

Found it at Fry's for $9.99 a few weeks ago. What a pointless game. I very much regret the purchase.

Mortal Kombat VS DC

my friend bought it a month before SFIV came out - itching to play some fighting game on his 360. SO FUCKING TERRIBLE :lol

the whole game is a mess - shoddy hit detection, poor animations, etc. didn't expect much from it, but it's really laughably bad.

Then SFIV came out and we all basked in it's glory.

By no means a bad game but still the worst that i have played recently is Motorstorm 2 (Pacific Rift?). I just didn't find it particularly fun in either single or multiplayer. For an arcade style racer some of the vehicles are just horrible to use off the bat (quad-bike mainly) so maybe i just need to spend more time with it. Shouldn't have to and probably won't though.

Disaster: Day Of Crisis is basically a compendium of things you should never do when you design a game.

Hmm...

I feel that Disaster is one of those games where it really is more than the sum of its parts. Sure the graphics aren't great and the individual gameplay scenarios are quite derivative (SHOOT, DRIVE, WALK!), but the gameplay is still fun and because it's held together by the ridiculous story and style it really does make it an entertaining, though flawed, game. I certainly had a lot of fun with this game and was compelled enough to even finish.

I don't ever play bad games because I'm an informed consumer, but Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume is definately the most frustrating game I've played recently with the isometric viewpoint (which makes it hard to see) and the archaic interface, especially when I compare it to the streamlined interface of Fire Emblem GBA which came out over 5 years ago. It really grates on me when I die / restart a battle only to realise that I'll be spending a few minutes loading, skipping story and re-organinsing my team to replay a battle (for the 10th time), whereas compared to Fire Emblem you can save all of your preparation just before a battle and pretty much restart that battle as soon as you reboot the game.

Prince of Persia 2008, it looks great, at first it looks like it plays well, but it's extremely repetitive, like, in 20 minutes you've seen everything the game has to offer gameplay wise, it's don't really feel like a game actually, it feels like an interactive movie. It's really disappointing considering the awesome art direction and the goodness of the last gen PoP.

Assassin's Creed and Far Cry 2 has been pretty terrible and repetitive too, I wonder what's going on in Ubisoft these days, they used to make great games.

They're on some kind of a "open world" binge...every game has to be open world. Though, I didn't mind it on Assassin's Creed, and was only mildly annoyed in FC2 (I think cause I played the save-anywhere PC version), I really thought it brought PoP 2008 down...

Wow - a lot of hate for well received games in this thread.

For me it would probably be Sonic Unleashed for the Wii. My son bought it with some birthday money when it came out and I decided to give it a go and didnt care for it too much. Other than that, random iPhone games that someone suggested so I gave in and gave them a try - I dont even remember the name of most of them, thats how bad they were.

Yup, because trained military men stand still to shoot at axe weilding, hood covered zombies running at them at a thousand miles an hour. True story.

i'm sure military men face zombies everyday. >_> so it's an old mechanic from RE4, but that doesn't make the game any less fun once you get used to the controls. to each their own.

Resident Evil 5- holy shit, it's amazing how a brand can sell such a shitty shitty outdated game with shiny graphics.

Didn't you guys play the demo? It just didn't click with me at all, hated the controls.

The last bad game I've played is:
Merc 2 on PS3 (it's pretty boring)
Mass Effect on 360 (I don't really buy many games for the 360, my last one was Gears 2 which was good)

Worst I've played lately would probably be Star Ocean 4. I wanted so bad for it to be good. Maybe I just need to put more time into it.

You should have. Most of the problems with the game are really overblown by people that didn't understand the reasons behind the perceived shortcommings. It is easily one of the best JRPG games this generation.

Chris Redfield has killed more zombies than I have eaten hotdogs. :|

I enjoyed the PC demo of L4D when it came out on steam but I recently played it local coop on 360 and it was sooo bad. We got just past the hospital and couldn't play anymore.

You guys need to play more games if Dead Space and Gears of War are the worst things you've played recently... I'll have to go with Bionic Commando's multiplayer demo, but the single player still looks great. In the trailers, the guns seem to have weight to them, but in the MP they don't. It feels like the bullets are all passing through everyone, and the auto targetting nonsense is a pet peeve of mine in multiplayer.

Sorry, but RE5 was awesome. I wasn't expecting a survival horror game, so I had a lot of fun playing it. I got Dead Space as well for my survival horror needs.

Picked up Dark Messiah on 360 at $5 from BB last. After 4 hours of hoping it would turn into something worth the $5, I figured it wasn't gonna happen.

Yeah, we all don't expecting a survival horror game, if we read the name Resident Evil.

Background: I just ripped my entire Wii game collection to my USB harddrive. This is kind of mindnumbing stuff, so I grabbed a random freshly-ripped game and played it.

Alien Syndrome (Wii version)

I mean, it's not that bad. It's just ... really sloppy. You see, there's a good game in there somewhere, and aside from severely flawed/imbalanced game mechanics, horrible user interfaces, and graphics that would make the Gamecube blush (PSP port) it's quite a nice multiplayer-enabled dungeoncrawler... or rather, it COULD HAVE BEEN. Which is the root of my anguish.

The issue I have with the game is that it could be a really fun "campy" game with just a handful of painfully obvious tweaks. It's like they did it on purpose, just to tick me off.

This makes playing the game worse than playing an actually BAD game. It's actually painful to play. It makes me shake my head in wonder when I read on their forums that they went to great lengths to hide mutated cow easter egg bosses everywhere, and describe that both devs and QC wasted a huge amount of time on them. All that time could have gone into a scarce few optimisations like... I don't know... NOT controlling the camera via Nunchuck tilt. Or giving the menu system a five-minute usability overhaul. Arrrrgh. Urge to kill... rising...

I still like it though. It has its moments. And what can I say, I'm a dungeon crawler addict.

And now, to soothe my homicidal urges and induce some suicidal ones: Mercury Meltdown Revolution. See you on the other side, suckers.

the simpsons game (360) i played and beat the ds version and liked it ok. got the 360 version via goozex and not liking it much everything else ive played this year ive really liked.

A few of the posts in this thread come off sounding like "Ugh, A Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich? That's peasant food! I normally dine on the finest caviar."

Basically there's a lot of games here that I wish I could be playing right now.

As for the worst game I've played recently? Hmmm...

An Xbox 360 Community game called "Chalk". It's basically a glorified game of tag. Maybe it would've been more fun with actual human players but playing with just the CPU was a real drag. It's a shame, because the game has some kind of an alright style. It's just super, super boring and super, super annoying in the gameplay department.

I played Fallout 3 a few months back.....holy whatthefuckisthisshit?

Horrible graphics, "story" was umm...yeah..."gotta find my dad so he can tell me what's going on!" :lol :lol
Too much open world for my liking; easy to get lost and trekking back was a chore.

No thanks. Not my cup of Tea.
