What's the worst NES Mega Man?

according to inafune even 2 and 3 had thousands of fan submissions. the wording in the complete works book makes it sound as if practically ALL the robot master designs were either taken directly from or inspired by fan submissions.
Yeah, I think this is the case, but MM4 is where the contests started proper. Fun fact: if you're ever in Tokyo, Super Potato in Akiba has one of the eight gold MM4 carts given to the winners of the Robot Master Contest. They're selling it for something like 250,000 yen, but I doubt anyone will ever bite.

6

MM1 isn't all that good either. Really MM 2-3 are the pinnacle of the series. 4-5 are good. 1 is decent, but has issues (first game and all). 6 is still better than most games, but a huge step backwards.

2 and 3 have the nostalgia for them but they aren't much different that the others to be honest. 2 has its share of random and badly designed levels, and 3 has gone a little too far with the recycling of MM2's boss and the overly long Willy Castle.

4 and 6 are uninspired, 5 has a lot of pretty neat feature, but it's too easy, 1 is the first game and has tons of pretty bullshit sections, plus no password. So I'd say 1. But well, they're pretty good, it's just that by the time you finish the first 3 game, you're tired of the formula, so 4+ gets a lot of undeserved hate :lol 5 is really underrated, but the fact that it's so easy don't help.

I dno't really get the hate for Bass, 7 and 8, for me they shit on all the nes games big time :lol Especially 7 and BAss , the boss battles in these games are pure awesome, the levels are pretty nice and the music are great. I liked the bigger sprites too, the NES games feel a little empty I think, it's especially apparent in the boss battles. 8 have too much gimmick though, but 7 and Bass are fucking awesome.

I can't wait to download 10 on the PSN :D

3 was awesome. Rush, Protoman, good music. Loved Gemini man, and Shadow man. Plus some of the old robot masters from 2 make an appearance. Kinda like two games rolled into one.

2 is my second favorite. Never played any of the rest.

:O blasphemy! But I know i'm probably one of ten people on the planet who really enjoys 4 so it's cool.

I must be one of those 10 people. Fuck the haters! MM4 is awesome! Though I really should try playing 4-6 "Charge-less" sometime.

I'd say 1 is my least favorite because of how clunky it is in comparison to the later games.

2 > 4 > 3 > 6 > 5 > 1

Now I'm sure people are going to give me the eye for putting 4 on the list (and so high). I really do enjoy it, but it might have to do with the fact that it was always an exciting treat to rent MM4 from the video store every weekend (they had 3 and 4 and I would interchange between the two of them).

I got 5 for Christmas, and as a kid, I just couldn't help but play through it and think "This is *OK*, I wish I was playing 2, 3, or 4 right now though."

.

The "recycled" enemies were in addition to the eight originals. It's not like Capcom didn't think of any new masters. And Wily's castle is 4 stages long, which is standard.

6 is my least favorite, but 5 is probably the worst. I have some sort of special attachment to 4 that I really can't explain, but it could probably be considered to be the worst, especially the boss fights.

I guess I confused the willy castle stuff with another MM game then :lol Isn't it in 3 that there is two set of Wily levels? Maybe it's 4, I don't remember :lol

Mega Man 6 by far. The others are all great games, but 6 really is not. Sure some graphics are nice, but the levels aren't that interesting. Also the robot masters are just awful, the weakest collection of bosses in the series for sure. They all just shoot stuff at you... there's none of the variety of boss types that you find in most of the other NES games. The new Rush Suit stuff doesn't work that well either, this is classic Mega Man, not Mega Man X, and that feels like something from an X game sort of. Also, Mega Man IV for the Game Boy came out before this, and Mega Man V was in development or out (depending on region I believe), so why doesn't this game have the money and shop systems from those games? All I can think of is because the game was obviously a cheap final effort done in the system's last days just because of how successful the older games had been. That had been true for some time though I think, and through the fifth game the NES games were great (indeed Mega Man 4 is my favorite one of the NES games), but the sixth one's just not even close.

Mega Man 1 might have aged pretty badly, but it's such an amazing game for its time and still such a classic that I can't rate it badly... and plus, it is still great despite its flaws, particularly in versions like the Mega Man Anniversary Collection version where you can actually save. 2 almost everyone loves. 3 isn't one of my favorites, but it is still a good game... I might rank it fourth or fifth in the series, but there's a big gap between that and MM6. 4 is my favorite as I said. It's just an amazing game... the charge shot was a fantastic addition to the series, and the game has my favorite bosses and music too. 5 is pretty good; it's too easy, but other than that it's great, with some interesting levels, cool robot masters, and good new ideas. 6 isn't a bad game or anything, it is still a good, fun game, but it's way behind the first five for sure.

My order, best to worst: 4, 2, 1, 5, 3, 6 ... though 1, 5, and 3 are pretty close and I could see putting those in another order. I could easily swap 5 and 1, it's hard to decide between those two... but also, maybe I rank 2 a bit high, I mean it is great but I don't love it as much as some people. Whatever the case though, as I said the first five are all fantastic games, which definitely makes it harder to choose between them. Being just good the 6th game's definitely in last, but still it is a good game.

4.... charge shot ruined it. You had to use it on practically everything to do decent damage with the mega buster. And the sound effect....

Castlevania II is the worst Megaman.

Seriously, it's hard to choose between 1 and 2 for best. 1 blew my mind when it was new "it's like playing a cartoon, for real"

2 I knew what I was in for and was surprised how much better it was than I expected. So polished, so loved by the developers.. too bad it was f-easy.

3 was really good but starting to feel tired, and didn't look as nice as 2.

4 I don't remember.

5 I REALLY don't remember. Do I even own it? (last megaman I played, if I even did)

But now I am inspired to play through 4-6. Thanks, gaf!

Yeah I hated 6. Never liked it. Between the Rush implementation and the hidden powerups and playing stages twice... nah. Robot Masters were also pretty bad.

I always hear people say 5 is the worst, but I liked 5 more than 4 even. Still not as good as 1 2 3, but 5 is okay. 4 is also okay. 6 isn't.

Just for the record, I think 3 is the best, then 2.

Either 5 or 6.

Probably 5 due to the overwhelmingly easy difficulty. And that boring jet ski segment in Wave Man's stage.

They're all great, though.

I'm surprised to see so many people mention 6. I thought it was great, and one of the last NES games to be released.

- Interesting robot masters
- 2 "Wily Castle" segments (One for Mr. X and then another for Dr. Wily)
- Mega Man actually CATCHES Dr. Wily, giving a satisfying ending
- Great music, as always
- 4 levels had alternate paths to take, as well as secret areas to find
- I think it was the first introduction to Beat (could be wrong...)
- Rush got a complete makeover to transforming into a jetpack and a power suit.

I'd have to go with 4 or 5 being the worst, though all the MM NES games were fairly consistent in terms of quality. 3 was hands down the best though.

Okay, well the reason I ask is that my friend Alex and I are getting Let's Playing back up and running again and I want to do a full game run through to celebrate. I figured the worst Mega Man would still be a fun enough game to play, but give something interesting to talk about and not be too long.

4. oh god 4 absolutely. horrible music, shit robot masters with awful attack patterns, inexplicable audio glitches/bugs, samey, gimmicky level design. it's the only bad 8-bit mega man game if you ask me. mm5 and mm6 are both great.

My positive memories of 4 are probably a little clouded by nostalgia (it being the first MM I owned -- 3 was the first I played), but man, it had some great tracks.

I know it's not a popular opinion, but I'll never understand why 2 is widely regarded as the best.

This is the order for me:

3 > 4 > 2 > 5 > 6 > 1

YES! I thought for sure it was dead!

4 is the worst one. Uninspired levels and it doesn't help that it has the worst soundtrack in all the classic series.

I don't really get the love for MM3. It's good, but a tad unpolished and the special weapons are really meh. Great music, though.

Out of the NES games, MM5 is probably my favorite, with MM2 behind it.

I actually like MM9 and MM10 better than all older ones. I know it's bit early to say that about MM10, and my opinion can change in the future, but, right now, it's my favorite Mega Man. It took a few playthroughs to grow on me, though.

4 and 6 for me. MM4 felt rushed out. It's the easiest of the originals (the only exception would be Bright Man's stage) and was the start of the tonal shift of the series into something lighter and even more cartoonish. Coming off of the first three games it just looked and sounded noticably lacking. MM6, while harder than 4 and 5, gave me the feeling that the developer no longer really cared to put much effort into it. It felt kinda shallow.

I used to hate MM5 for the longest time up until I played it a couple of years ago before MM9 came out. I ended up enjoying a lot of the level design much more (except for Charge Man) and most of the musc is pretty memorable.

My ranking goes pretty much:

MM1/MM2/MM3 > MM5 > MM6 >> MM4

Getting married, moving and YuGiOh! just made things a bit hard to get rolling!

Weird timing

I'm actually posting my thoughts on all of the original Megaman games.

(Yeah sorry no direct links ATM but 1-5 are listed on the page just scroll down.)

I just finished part 6 and I'm not quite sure what to say about it. It's certainly different. Hell I'm hesitant to even call it a pure Megaman game..but I like it.

Random quotes for non-fans of giving hits:

Megaman 4 said:
The fights with the Robot Masters feel a bit clumsier than they should be. In fact a lot of the damage and subsequent deaths are going to come from the boss bumping into Megaman. Sometimes this is intentional like with Dive Man's charging attack but usually it feels like there isn't any real pattern and Megaman just ends up trapped.

Megaman 5 said:
Actually "Not worth the trouble" does a fair job of describing Megaman 5 as a whole. There are some improvements over part 4 like the useless Rush Marine getting jettisoned but the game itself is so predictable and so easy that it actually comes out to be a worse game overall. Then again I'm not even sure if that's right cause if I played Megaman 5 before part 4 I'd say 4 is the worse game. What kind of sense does that make? It's almost as if they're interchangeable in quality.

So far I'm thinking either 4 or 5 are my picks for worst.

You can include me as one of those 1 in 10.
Pharoah Man power is awesome!

Or the glitch where you just use your brain to memorize his pattern, after which he becomes extremely easy.
Come now, we all know thats just an urban legend.

Megaman 6 is a great Megaman game. Highly polished, great music and stages, Rush power adaptors were a hell of a lot of fun, Megabuster balanced out (wayy too powerful in 5). Nothing but love.

I think the problem people have with 6 is just it's existence. It was the 6th MM game, Capcom were the Ubisoft of their day, 6 games is a lot of milking. This created hate.

But looking back that cow was still giving off a damn fine glass of milk for MM6.

Anyway my pick is MM1. I love all the NES Megaman games, I think they are all great, the thing is each subsequent MM game improved so much over 1 in controls, bosses, graphics, stages, music, that MM1 gets the short end of the stick by default.

4... 4 feels rushed. 4 has it's moments, but it's definitely the least memorable title in the series, for me, and this is including MM1. Still a fine game, though.

Subsequently I think it was Capcom themselves who said 3 was rushed, and that's my favorite game of the entire series.

I'm guessing the one where you use Elec Man's weapon, then pause and unpause repeatedly to make it hit multiple times.

It took me like 30 tries to beat him. I did use elec man's power but I didn't use the glitch. Man it was satisfying when I finally killed that thing. Dodging all those globs takes pinpoint accuracy.

What glitch?
MM1 is the only game in the series that has an actual pause button. If you pause during the hit flash of some weapons, then unpause, it registers another hit. If you do it quickly enough you can get up to eight or nine hits off one Elec shock, for example. Note this also applies to Mega's hit flash, so you can actually kill yourself faster if you pause at the wrong time.

Anyway rk, if this is for Let's Playing, I really recommend MM4. MM6 for whatever reason is butt-expensive, or at least is around here. I found mine at a steal of a price for 1980 yen, but usually it's 3980 or 3480 at most places. MM4, on the other hand, is usually the cheapest to pick up, along with MM5, both easily found under 1000 yen.

MM1 and MM6 are both pricey.

None of the are really "bad", but I think 6 is definitely at the bottom of the barrel of the NES games. They made it incredibly too easy and it showed the most evidence that they were running out of Robot Master ideas. What exactly is a Yamato? Tomahawk man?! Seriously?!

Alex actually has them all (except 2 I think?). A store going out of business had fami carts at 50% off. I myself got some stupid deals. (Bangai-O in box for about ¥500.)

Exactly. Plus having to charge it slowed the gameplay down.
