What's the worst US city you've been to?

I regularly visited Bakersfield, and I could barely tell the difference between it and the desert.

I lived in Modesto for the good part of my life and that place is hell, but it's no Stockton.

People saying anywhere else in CA haven't lived in the hellish pit hole that is Central Valley.

As a resident of Philly(and a shit talker of it myself), I'm really curious as to which areas of Philly some of you have been.

Los Angeles is great. You're just bad at cities.

For me Indianapolis sticks with me as just a bummer -- Detroit, of course, is pretty much a complete write off. The whole state of Michigan is a bummer in that regard because all of those boring middle class strongholds the rest of the place are the reason why Detroit got so bad.

But Indianapolis is one of those cities, especially downtown, where you can see that the place is going to just barely cling to life for another hundred years but never get it right. It is doomed to worse than mediocrity forever.

newark nj

get off exit 56 on route 78..

drive four blocks down...

you'll have at least three dudes hollering at you to buy drugs

and I'm talking about DRUGS (crack smack)

los angeles gets an honourable mention, but i'd have to say las vegas. LA could conceivably be fun but i just cannot believe people live in vegas.

Leeroy, Alabama.
Essentially the perfect portrayal of every stereotypical "redneck" thing you've ever heard. If you go there alone and you aren't white and straight, you will probably die. Not that there's anything there.

I went there in high school because I was in the drumline and there was a football game in the lovely town. They threw rocks through the bus's windows after the game because we almost won, and multiple people had knives pulled on them.

Its amazing how many times la is listed. And some of the reasons are pretty funny too.

But worst city goes to riverside. Being stuck in that cesspool for 3 hours felt like a fucking eternity.

Detroit. I found LA fun, don't know why anyone would call it the worst. I felt really awkward the entire time I was in Texas though, is it common to be treated like a freak there if you're Canadian?

Probably Trenton.

Haha. Yes. I love passing by this bridge.

Trenton and Newark aren't that bad guys. Camden and parts off AC...yeah. Jersey City? Please. Y'all don't know nothing :p

I guess I'm just used to it

After living in/near Victorville I see all of lower San Bernardino as somewhat nicer.

Tallahassee

Someone else already said it, but I can't imagine you've been to too many places if you feel like Tallahassee is the worst city you've ever been to. Annoying college kids aside, it's a fairly beautiful landscape. Tons of ancient oak trees, Spanish moss, and rolling hills. What's not to like?

Ocala, Florida.

Eff that place.

Yep. Rochester is pretty shit as well.

Wat? I live in the city of Rochester and it's not THAT bad here, but then again I only think Buffalo is slightly worse *shrugs*. Anyway, the worse city I've been too is probably Philadelphia, soon as the sun sets that place becomes depressing as hell.

Cleveland.. think i accidentally strolled into parts of East Cleveland. Shit was filled with tons and tons of abandoned buildings.(by strolled i mean drove, walking im sure i wouldnt be here today)

East Cleveland is weird. It's 2 of the top 5 hospital systems in the wold surrounded by beirut....

Sacramento. That place is a fucking shithole and it's surrounded by flat land of fields. So fucking boring. A close second and really just a shitty scummy place is San Bernardino.

So far LA, Detroit and Florida sucks.

Still surprised to see Gainesville up there twice. For a town of roughly 125K people, that not good. Would be interesting to see a thread of best cities visited for comparison.

I guess the worse city I've been in is Ocala. I don't travel much.

LA-proper is just a sweltering shithole. Around it is awesome. Santa Monica, Hollywood, Long Beach, Pasadena (small, but can be chill) amongst others.

Ive driven all throughout the states and I have to say the top 3 cities that we fuel up before we get there to avoid having to stop is Detroit, Downtown Atlanta and Baton Rouge. Can meet some pretty scary folk in those places.

All around Baltimore and N.E. DC. You know it's bad when dudes playing football in the street at 3 AM in the morning. Oh, and when a little kid punches your teeth into your gums with brass knuckles or something while stealing your hat. (Friend, not me. Crazy night.)

Detroit. It was a real bummer, and it didn't help that I stayed in the most disgusting motel I could ever imagine. Had some good donuts the next morning, though.

Bedbugs ? fuck that I'd have looked around/slept on a bench than the possibly of a shithole motel.

Easily NYC...and I live here. It depends on your definition of bad, though, of course. Yeah, there are much more dangerous places to live/visit, but NYC is awful because it's so expensive. It's borderline unlivable, really, and full of 20-nothings walking around pretending to be somebody and emptying their pockets to impress others. I look forward to the day I can move somewhere a little more sensible.

Don't get all the Philly hate but I've only been there twice so maybe I was fortunate in experiences. My vote would have to go to either Gary or Detroit. Although Detroit may actually be improving here soon.

LoL. You just named all the shitty suburban parts of LA. I see some people just can't handle being downtown (anywhere, apparently -- Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore). Hollywood is miserable and touristy, Santa Monica is a mall on the ocean. Oh well.
