What's up with Etrian Odyssey V?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mr4WKuiQKfM

This teaser trailer came out nearly a year ago and there still hasn't been a single word about the game as far as I know. At first I thought that was because they wanted to focus on EO2 remake, and then Etrian Mystery Dungeon. Those have been out for a while now though (especially in Japan) and there's still nothing on EO5. As far as I can tell, it was completely MIA at TGS as well. I guess the Persona delay took front and center.

Anyone know anything? I'm assuming not, but maybe we can speculate as to what might be going on. Or maybe it's just taking its sweet time. Who knows!

no platform, either

nx? or maybe v = vita

either or it feels like they announced it too early considering how short the announce to release timing is for EO games usually
Lol.

I'm still holding out for it being on Wii U and they're holding back the announcement until after #FE. Wii U and 3DS are the only platforms that really make sense until we have more details on the NX.

The released two this year, right?

Maybe they want to space it out a bit?

Japan only got Etrian Mystery Dungeon this year and its a spin-off. And I think it performed slightly better than the previous entry, Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold (This is the one we just got last month).

Maybe if they hadn't announced it already. And it's not like I expect it out this year. I just want to know more about what it is. So far we have a tree and a song.

Welcome to Persona 5, where we had a bunch of chairs and were waiting for emancipation for about a year. That game was announced on November 24, 2013 and only resurfaced on September 1, 2014.

Etrian Odyssey V was announced on November 24, 2014 and... well, we're here. Just a bit later in the timeline compared to P5, but not anomalous compared to that flagship game. Maybe we'll see it again this year, but it sounded pretty early from developer comments back in January, so it never sounded like a 2015 release to me. Won't be an early 2016 one, either.

Maybe something is up with Atlus? EO4 had about a 6 month turnaround from announcement to release. I think P4 had something similar though.

I can't imagine it being on anything other than the 3DS unless it's delayed so far that it doesn't make sense for it to be on that platform anymore.

Honestly, it's probably for NX.

ATLUS is really on top of supporting Nintendo's consoles from the getgo (ignoring the Wii U).

I don't think it's necessarily something that's up with the company instead of it being more of a shift in how they announce the most anticipated games in their tentpole game franchises.

But I will say that if it was that simple, one would think they would have already announced the platform for the game, right? And if that game was, say, for the NX, that could explain its radio silence, too.

The absence of a platform may lead one to believe its for a platform that does not yet exist.

Or, they scrapped it or put it aside for the time being due to either concern of franchise saturation in this vein of gameplay/design, or just believing it will not perform well.

Or, they've gone back to formula and are looking at tuning the franchise a bit differently now and look for potential growth. Maybe they wanted to incorporate more external elements after the good performance of PQ.

Or, games just take a long time to make and this was announced too early.

Right now... who knows?

I'd guess 3DS even if it comes out after the NX lol.

Atlus has always been a bit slow to move to the next platform (though P5 seems to be bucking that trend to an extent), and they really haven't supported the vita at all. Could be mobile, I guess.

Given how much they're pushing P5 right now, I don't think they want to muddy the water with details about another game during TGS. Maybe we'll get more details in a separate event later in the year.

EO is dead.

Well, that's not technically true. Persona 5, Odin Sphere Leifthrasir and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim were featured at TGS (more about the former two, though). Plus, we had Naoto Hiraoka stating on the Sega panel right as TGS began that Atlus is into new IPs and that they'll have a new game to announce real soon.

Well the other 2 games are not Atlus internal games. Just like when they were pushing DAN, they only focused on it when they still have P5 in the wings.

Also, they only announced that they'll have more announcements. Not exactly news here.

Seems as if though Atlus likes fully announcing Etrian games within six months of their Japanese release (in the case of Untold 2, three months), so when it does get re-revealed, it likely won't be too long before it actually ships. But as things stand, Persona 5 had a 281-day gap between trailers, whereas it's been 301 since Etrian V's first trailer.

Untold 2 released in November of last year, though – three days after the announcement of V.

That's true. I don't know if there would have been a conflict of interests between EOV and P5, but, between their two currently announced internal projects, the latter was definitely meant to be the sole focus.

But the thing between P4D and P5 is that they're both Persona. Etrian Odyssey stuff was being promoted alongside P4D this year, so they're not averse to doing that.

I figure EO5 is coming, but it may not happen before the inevitable Untold 3 release.

They've really been churning out games in this series (and spinoffs, like Etrian Mystery Dungeon and Persona Q). Much as I love the games it could make sense to back off and give this one a bit more time. My other friends who like EO are all burnt out on the formula now.

I so agree with this -- except that my way of dealing with it is to avoid the spinoffs/remakes and just focus on the mainline games. It's been 3 years since 4, which was awesome, and I'm ready to dive back in on a proper evolution to 4. Persona Q and the Untolds don't really do it for me like 4 did.

I don't mind it taking a while though. EO5 can come out at the end of 2016 and I'm fine with that. I just want to know what it is, what platform it is, what the new gimmick is, etc.

EO V is the next game in the pipeline and there's no way in hell they bump EOU3 ahead of it after U2's awful sales.

EO3 was my first one, so im bias when I say it's my favourite (others don't come close to class/subclass depth). It's the last one left to remake/"eo4ify" so EOV will be after that at the very longest.

I really did enjoy the spin-offs though (Persona Q, EMD) so as long as they keep them coming, im happy.

They might be waiting to see whats going on in the handheld market before committing to a platform. The 3DS is pretty weak compared to most phones these days and the N3DS probably doesn't have the user base to be appealing enough.

Even worse was DeSu2 RB.

I don't know if that will happen or not, but it really does feel like it's something that would slip to whatever the next-generation of Nintendo handhelds will be. At least given the kind of weird point in the lifecycle. Or one of the last for the 3DS.

I think it will be one of the last 3ds titles. On NX at launch sounds risky.

EO is so dependent on having the two screen setup that I can't imagine it on the Vita.

Using the touch screen to switch between the map and the dungeon view would be cool thought. No chance of it happening, of course.

Atlus won't be the first one to move on to new tech. This is a company that's releasing a PS3 game in 2016. The 3DS would have to be dead or a pirate haven for them to consider that and it's not, especially in Japan.

NX probably isn't out in 2016 anyway.

Lol.

Vita is a lot more likely than Wii U. :P

Neither are very likely to begin with, but putting EO5 on Wii U would do nothing but kill the franchise. There's no established audience for RPGs on the Wii U.

Persona 4 Dancing All Night was announced late 2013, and went into radio silence until it was delayed later in 2014. It was eventually released in mid 2015.

"SMT x FE" was announced in mid 2013, and it was only revealed as #FE in early 2015. Coming out end of 2015.

Persona 5 was announced late 2013, and there was only gameplay footage in early 2015. Coming out mid 2016.

Etrian Odyssey V was only announced in late 2014. Long way to go. :P

I still haven't decided if I should buy EO4 since the last one I played was the first one. I need a good dungeon crawler and I hated Grimrock

To be honest 4 is probably the best one to go to next. Very beginner/casual friendly while keeping the hardcore/long time fans happy with the difficulty options while being an awesome game at that.

I played 1 and dropped it pretty quickly. I heard good things about 3 and picked that up and it was enormously better. 4 is even better than that. I'd recommend at least playing the demo since it's a meaty chunk of the game and you can transfer your save into the real game if you want to buy it. It's on sale every other week too.

I think it will be a late 2016/early 2017 release on 3DS with more info early next year, and they haven't said anything about it to avoid confusion with EO Untold 2, Mystery Dungeon etc. No point in releasing on NX if they've been maintaining it's fairly consistent fanbase on 3DS, plenty of niche titles do well releasing on older hardware even after the release of a successor, EO isn't a game that would do well with a tiny NX installed base considering it's sales on the large 3DS base.

No chance of it going anywhere other than a Nintendo portable, it's cheap to develop for.

I wouldn't say Wii U would be better for sales but it does have the next best control scheme for EO next to 3DS and I would expect it there before Vita. It's really the only platform that could get an EO game without any gameplay sacrifices. Not to mention that the Wii U does actually have better Atlus support than the Vita in terms of original RPGs.

At any rate, I do think it was strange it was announced without a platform so i like to keep the dream alive.
