The oldest skeleton joke I can think of that might have led to this was how many scary stories were ended on 4chan's paranormal board, /x/. What became an eventual widespread meme of intense fear of skeletons and sub-branching skeleton jokes started off by concluding an OP on /x/ with, "and then a skeleton popped out." It was funny because there was tons of build up, then it'd end with a shitty skeleton line, kind of like that joke post about gamergate that one guy did here not too long ago.

This is less of pasta and more of a story ender. However it has been used so many times that it is as close to being creepypasta as a meme can be. To use it, end your story with "and then a skeleton popped out." Instant horror story.

KnowYourMeme, which is a terrible source, claims "and then a skeleton popped out," dates all the way back to 2008, but I wouldn't be surprised if it existed before then as well. So yeah, skeleton jokes have been a thing on 4chan for at least 8 years. Spooky Scary Skeletons is just an offshoot of that.
