What's your favorite canceled game?

This!!

Lily Bergamo, looked really cool.

And this!!

Oddworld: The Brutal Ballad of Fangus Klot

I've only seen concept art but I've never forgotten about it. I adore Stranger's Wrath and would like more original Oddworld.

Does footage need to exist? Because for mine it doesn't.

Lufia 3: Ruins Chaser

Nothing exists except for a few concept artworks and 1 music theme, which you can find here. The story would have been this:

Since the japanese publisher went bankrupt, the project was put on hold and instead was later repurposed and turned into Lufia - The Legend Returns for the GBC.

I was so excited for that one. I still gotta try the Lufia games that came after 2, but none of those seemed too good.

Starcraft: Ghost
Opening Cinematic
Gameplay Footage 1
Gameplay Footage 2

Being able to get down into the battlefield with all of the familiar elements present in the pulled-back RTS view looked cool. Being able to call in Siege Tank strikes, use the familiar unit abilities in third-person, jump into all the different vehicles and even Marine armor against waves of Zerglings? Yep... what a pity.

This post nailed it for me. StarCraft: Ghost really needs to be revived. I really love the story and world of the StarCraft games. Ghost was the perfect opportunity to show the really cool stuff from this world up-close and personal.

Nova is also a really cool character. At least we have that Nova Covert Ops DLC thing coming to StarCraft 2, which is cool. But it won't be the same as Ghost.

- Metroid Dread. I hope it returns in some form. It boggles my mind that Nintendo decided to put out Federation Force instead. Lets hope that Reggie really "knows what the fans want".

- Star Wars 1313. Probably the one that hurt me the most. I was hooked from the very beginning as the demo just did it for me. It seemed like it was a story driven game, too.

- Darth Maul game. The early stage footage looked like a better version of "Forced Unleashed". Thankfully, (and I appreciate this a lot, like infinite respect for the devs) they are still working in their free time on a demo for this gen. They want to show it at some point. Fingers crossed for this.

I'm missing a lot of my favourite cancelled games, but those always come to mind 1st, whenever cancelled games are discussed.

They are okay. Legend Returns is different enough, the battle system is interesting and fun, but all dungeons are randomly generated, which is a shame. Ruins of Lore has basically the Lufia 2 Gameplay with puzzles, but it's plot is basically a side story that plays some time after Lufia 2. No sinistrals and nothing.

And then we have the remake of 2. I only played that for a short time. Gameplay is more like Kingdom Hearts, but it still has puzzles.

Troika's post-apocalyptic RPG
To put things in perspective; imagine a time where Fallout 1 and 2 blew your mind and the original dev team got together independantly, after Interplay was falling apart together with Fallout 3 Van Buren, to release the next best post-apoc CRPG.
I wanted this game so bad.

Runner ups:

Duke Nukem Forever 2001 build with the E3 trailer.
I was a fanboy and this still looks like the most faithful and fun version of the Duke Nukem sequel.

Earthbound 64
I played Earthbound

Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans
Classic point'n click adventure in a Warcraft setting? Fuck yes, the trailer (that came with Diablo 2?) got me super hyped.

Ultima Online 2 / Ultima Worlds Online
UO x 3D engine x steampunk x Todd McFarlane character designs

This too:
The Warhammer 40k MMO. I was so excited. Stupid Games Workshop and THQ :(

This looked like it was going to be focused on open world, massive scale PvP with strategic objectives.
The game looked like a lot of fun in the trailer with all the controllable vehicles and structures. I was hoping this would deliver a DAoC RvR experience in the Warhammer 40k universe.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

We may be getting XV, but the game looks too different for me to be as excited as I was. Hell, Versus was realistic Kingdom Hearts, while 15 is weighted combat that seems very different. I'll still play XV and I'll probably love it, but I regret that I'll never get to play the original Versus XIII. It kinda sucks; Kingdom Hearts is my favourite game of all time, so a game like that but with a realistic story would have been right up my alley.

All my picks were already said;

Especially Mega Man Legends 3, heck all the Mega Man sequels and remakes that were bound to happen at that time...

Also did not know about True Fantasy Live Online, kinda glad Level-5 managed to make Fantasy Life after all these years.

My favorite canceled game is Prey 2 because I love sci-fi games and the premise looked awesome.

Second favorite is Star Wars 1313. Simply put it's Uncharted meets Star Wars, and it looked like it had a lot of heart in it.

Honorable mention is B.C., obviously a Peter Monyleux game but one with potential as it was Far Cry Primal meets Populous.

Urban Decay

http://web.archive.org/web/20080418064949/pcgtw.retro-net.de/index.php?id=games:urbandecay

At that time and rightfully so, Andrew Spencer was described as the Quentin Tarantino of video game programmers

Also had EA not screwed things up with Origin programmers, we'd had probably seen Crusader 3

Urban Decay, a violent action game set in a present-day American inner city, was announced in mid-1995 for a summer 1996 release. It was initially based on the same engine as Ecstatica, but with some improvements to allow SVGA graphics and the characters to have facial expressions. According to an old interview with Andrew Spencer, the game was influenced by John Woo and Quentin Tarantino films. Little is known about the plot: The main character is being chased by the police for a crime he did not commit; to prove his innocence, he must track down the real culprit.

Some more information by Mike Clarke, who worked as a musician at Psygnosis for many years: “Ah yes, Urban Decay. [...] There were loads of tech demos done and the game looked amazing. It was still a bit “Alone in the Dark” in parts with fixed camera locations, but was very good. It was pretty much the first proper adult game I’d seen, with swearing and “proper” violence in it. The stuff I saw was character anims synced to voice overs, some rag-doll demos (guy would fall down a set of stairs after you shot him), and a warehouse scene where you could stealthily walk up to someone from behind and slit their throat, or lean out from behind crates shooting with a gun in each hand. The only thing that I remember hearing was that they couldn’t make a good enough game out of it. They had all of these bits and pieces of “cool stuff”, but took too long to get anything together into a coherent whole. It was a great shame because it was the game that I was looking forward to the most out of all of the games of that era.”

Beside the popular ones like Silent Hills and Lily, there was this video of a first person horror-ish game that was supposed to be PS3/360 title, set in a snowy setting, and the video showcased a tech where you shoot monsters and see their multiple layers of skin or something like that.

6 pages and not a single mention of Zone of the Enders 3? GAF pls.

Also Silent Hills.

My vote goes for kingdom hearts:Birth by sleep vol 2. I know some of the story went into DDD and some more will be in kh2.8 but I would have loved a separate game.

Also final fantasy versus xiii. Final fantasy xv is not the same game.

For me, it has to be either True Fantasy Online, which was an Xbox MMORPG, made by Level 5 with Toriyama's art style, or Mega Man Universe, which appeared to be a hybrid of Mega Man Powered Up 2 and Mario Maker. It would've been so amazing.

I was looking forward to The Outsider. It was supposed to be an open-world spy thriller with interactive narrative. Was really bummed when it was cancelled. There were some efforts to save the game by turning it into a Bourne title but nothing really came out of it.

I remember vaguely the Metroid Dread behind-the-scenes thing being leaked

can anyone provide a link to the info regarding what exactly happened with that game?

The only cancelled game that still stings is Mega Man Legends 3.

They should have released the prototype, at the very least. I'm pretty sure it was done.

I second Rogue Leaders for Wii.

Third.

Wii-style motion controls is just begging for a good lightsaber game. That's the absolute first thing that should have been done. Instead the game was finished and due to a chain of unfortunate events, never got released. Nintendo should have published it themselves to help fill a gap in the schedule, but it never happened. I hope it sees the light someday.

Fallout 3.
I love fallout 1 and 2 and everything we know about the orginal Fallout 3 project sounded really cool, but then stuff happened and we ended up with Beth's mess instead. Makes me cry every time.
