What's your favorite game ending?

(Please tag spoilers for recent games - stuff released within the last year is probably a good line)

A lot of games (and media in general, I guess) have pretty milquetoast endings. The good guys win, the bad guy gets what he or she deserves, the standard happy ending. While there's nothing inherently bad about that, sometimes writers subvert expectations and deliver something that's immensely satisfying. What's your favorite?

I'll have to go with The Last of Us. I was consistently impressed with the game's writing, but that final act just blew me away. Everything just felt so organic rather than forced closure. It tied together all loose ends believably with some unbelievable voice acting from Troy Baker and co. And that last scene, holy shit.

Witcher 3

Ciri goes on to be a "Witcher" and Gerlat retires with Yen + all the other stuff I influenced in a good way during the game that gets show before the ending too. It was made even more awesome in the expansion with Yen visiting me at Corvo Bianco and talking about how they finally did it and settled down and got their happy ending.

Planescape Torment True Ending. It's oddly satisfying despite your character
being damned to eternity.

Majora's Mask after all the Sidequests completed is wonderful, you feel incredible, more than any power fantasy could ever provide.

Perfect and very satisfied :)

The same goes for this as well:

The Last of Us: Left me just sitting on the couch with my mouth open.

Uncharted 4: My heart was just swelling with happiness.

The Witcher 3: Real sense of satisfaction when my whole ending passed by.

The Wonderful 101

The sheer outrageous spectacle about it, sheer fun all the way through. Just when you think it can't get more crazy, it turns it up.

I also loved that it turned out that the Geth has a some what legit point and were screwed over and you can view yourself as the start of/eventual cause of some good ol villainy.

Also Bioshock Infinite. One of the few games where the ending IMHO was the most satisfying part, say what you will about it, but it really came together in an impactful and moving way.

Might be an unpopular opinion but I like it when games have a "True" or "Secret" ending, been replaying Virtue's Last Reward reminded myself how much of an impact going the extra length to get an extra ending makes.

Though I feel its not suitable for all games, like with Last of Us it might just be something people might want but not necessarily makes the narrative batter.

I also been replaying some Kingdom Hearts and I remembered how much I loved unlocking the secret endings, you get kickass CG about abstract events that turns out to be important plot points for future titles. Though that adds up to the weird Nomura-style that makes the whole story confusing...

It's hard to pick an absolute favorite but either MGS3 or Killer7. MGS3 is self explanatory but Killer7 is a bit different.

The whole hotel sequence with Garcian retracing his steps of killing the Smiths and eventually confronting himself on the roof and opening up the case is amazing. Garcian's VA delivered his lines so perfectly and Dissociative Identity starts playing and picks up right when the screen cuts to black. It is perfect. There is more after those credits but it doesn't top that ending.

Edit:

This too. The whole final level ramps the game's already over the top nature to one thousand and that final sequence had me standing up from excitement.

Ever is difficult to say.

But two recent ones that jump to mind were both bittersweet and I loved them: The Last of Us and my Witcher 3 ending.

Definitely. The game itself wasn't as good as its predecessors but still a fairly good game in its own right but the ending was definitely one of those moments. One of last gen's greatest moments.

Beat me to it

MGS3, the feels
The Last of Us, bittersweet
Uncharted 4, adorable
Final Fantasy VI, pretty epic and thorough (and bittersweet too,
Shadow NOOOO
Dragon's Dogma, kind of a mindfuck but cool
Panzer Dragoon Saga, epic and bittersweet
Final Fantasy Tactics, ditto

Not saying it's the best ending ever, but something really resonated with me about the undertale ending.

Toriel placing the piece of pie by Frisk's bed was a beautiful scene to end the game with.

Despite its relative simplicity, I dug pikmin 1's ending:

The way that you taught the passive little helpful yet helpless critters on the bottom of the food chain to kill really cracks me up.

TLoU

MGS3 is very, very close. But TLoU is such a special game in respect to nothing is probably going to ever get close to how perfect everything came together in terms of the story, pacing, characters, themes, acting...

So yea, I can only think of two times when I was awestruck by a games ending. MGS3 and TLoU

I really liked how in Majoras Mask you got to see how things went down with everybody. The ending of Final Fantasy VI is also awesome for the same reason, and then there is Monkey Island 2 which just came completely out of left field lol.

In no particular order:

Ocarina of Time
999
MGS
MGS3
The Walking Dead Season 1
Steins;Gate
Banjo-Kazooie (not mind blowing, but so damn satisfying)

All Silent hill 2 endings , specially the dog ending , love it.

Also the real ending of no more heroes is the hypest thing ever.

Edit: Forgot to say all the endings of Nier , so fucking good.

Witcher 3

Ciri goes on to be a "Witcher" and Gerlat retires with Yen + all the other stuff I influenced in a good way during the game that gets show before the ending too. Yep, mine too, the gold standard in how to wrap up a multi-game spanning AAA RPG in a meaningful and satisfying way. Was very impressed that
Geralt and Yen's Blood and Wine dialogue reflected that I was using a post-Wild Hunt game and thus their conversation was playing off of and embellishing their late game plans from the main game.
That's the way to do it.

Nier is another good one,as is The Last of Us.

I was not a fan of the ending, as it basically says that his son is going down the same way as John. But then again, i think the storytelling was pretty terrible all over this game, with the ludonarrative dissonance being on a completely other level.

Got two:

Final Fantasy VIII
Persona 4

Both games left me with that empty, hollow feeling of "Now what do I do with my life?" after the post-credits scenes.

The ending you get after sitting there for 15 minutes in Far Cry 4.

For actual game endings, the true ending of Persona 4 Golden made me cry a bit.

Vagrant Story.

You stop the real villain after discovering the truth of what Sydney came to Lea Monde to do, and come away from the experience a changed, and far more powerful, man. I only wish there had been a sequel, as I really wanted to see what Ashley would get up to now.

Shadow of the Colossus
The entire game was building up to the ending. There was a bit of sadness and was you went around killing Colossi and then at the end, it's confirmed you were being used the entire time and killing innocent creatures for power. You die in the process but you are reborn and life goes on. It's a beautiful ending and leads perfectly into Ico.

Double Dragon II
The slow motion ending, the cut scenes and a great ending song. I played the game constantly just to beat it and see the ending. Very memorable

Red Dead Redemption
Marston's death and then getting to play the rest of the game as his son was pretty mind blowing. The extended ending was very satisfying and played perfectly into the story.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow had an amazing ending.
You were played all the time. After killing the three Lords and facing Satan you realize your wife is never coming back, oh, and you unknowingly killed her in the first place. You're left in the door to hell, alone, powerless, screaming in agony.

Oh, you're also Dracula in modern times. Good night!
