What's your favorite HD JRPG?

Ermac

Proudly debt free. If you need a couple bucks, just ask.
I've been playing a lot of current gen RPGs lately, and it's a real shame how few are available and decent. Sure the DS has a ton, but to me stellar graphics really up the immersion factor.

Lost Oddesey for me without a doubt. Jansen is THE most refreshing character ever and the story and graphics are top notch as well. The dreams were icing on the cake. Bring on the sequel Mistwalker!

What say you GAF?

Jansen? That guy was annoying as fuck.

Demon Souls. Its like the perfect videogame.

Probably Lost Odyssey. And yeah, Jansen is a great character. I just wish the villain was more interesting than the "Ming the Merciless-looking" Gongora. He just felt like some generic villain IMO. It was probably the best RPG I have played since FF X. Almost felt like some long-lost Final Fantasy game, which isn't surprising considering who was involved in its production.

I haven't played enough of Vesperia to say if I like it more.

FFXII

None of the RPGs I've had the chance to play on the 360 (not many since it seems only one or two have demos :| ) has seemed like they were worth the purchase for me. Might reconsider when SO4 and ToV make their way to the PS3 since that is my main console gaming system.

I don't consider VC to be a JRPG, but even if I did, it wouldn't be as good as FFXII (well what I've played so far).

Valkyria Chronicles. Nothing else comes close because this gen has been horrible for JRPGs.

Of course, I lack a 360, so I might change my mind if I was able to spend more time with Lost Odyssey.

Lost Odyssey is so boring

I don't think i have a favourite HD JRPG so far, there is so little to choose from at the moment across both platforms. Next year is very different however :D

Nothing even close to these two in terms of their overall composition. What an ass gen :\

Blue Dragon is pretty good, The Last Remnant isn't bad, and Tales of Vesperia isn't bad either. But in terms of games that I think are really once-in-a-generation, it's really just Demon's Souls.

I completely agree, but Blue Dragon charmed me and was GORGEOUS

I really enjoyed Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, The Last Remnant, and Valkyria Chronicles, all for very different reasons.

I tolerated Star Ocean 4's horrible story and acting, but still liked the game.

I played through Blue Dragon. It was decent enough, but I'll probably never touch it again.

Infinite Undiscovery, well, at least I only blew $25 on it and not $60...

I've got Demon's Souls, but haven't yet gotten into it.

Tales of Vesperia, then Blue Dragon, then Demon's Souls. I'd put all of them up there with the best from any given era/platform.

The fuck.

Slim pickings, isn't it?

Haven't been impressed enough by any released so far to put up with the motion sickness that comes with it.

I just realised I haven't played one. =O

Oh well, Demon's Souls is on its way.

It's really been slim pickings. Lost Odyssey was good up until you got your 4th party member. Plot was more coherent and game play was much more streamlined with the original 3 members. Bluedragon was cool, but mediocre.

Valkyria Chronicles and Tales of Vesperia have been overall the best of the HD JRPG.

SO4 was really fun, the lack of customization up until the end game side quests really killed it. Edge Maverik makes me want to punch a hole in the wall, kay. Oh yeah, and the plot was mediocre.

I'd probably pick up Demon Souls if everything about it didn't scream WRPG.

Lost Odyssey - Dull, has no charm and a terrible villain.
Blue Dragon - Pretty bare bones, nothing special.
Infinite Undiscovery - Decent, but completely generic, would be wholly ignored last gen.
The Last Remnant - Has some interesting ideas and IMO one of the better titles - loadsa technical issues.
Valkyria Chronicles - One of the better titles, conventional anime mixed with unconventional gameplay. (Some people want something more traditional)
Tales of Vesperia - I've not played this, but it's a Tales game, you know what to expect.
Eternal Sonata - BLRGFFGBFH!!!11
Demon's Souls - Not 'JRPG' in any traditional sense (this is a good thing!) but it's hard to jump into if you're not in the mood
Folklore - Most people don't consider it a JRPG. I do, it's great.
Star Ocean 4 - Hur hur.

So there's either 1) Good but unconventional (PS3 lineup) or 2) Shite and derivative (360 lineup).
Nothing has quite hit the spot for me yet.

Tales of Vesperia, for a traditional JRPG.

I also loved Valkyria Chronicles, but that's much more strategy than RPG, and Demon's Souls is completely different again.

Depends what you define a JRPG to be.

As an RPG out of Japan:

Demon Souls
Marie and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Valkyria Chronicles
Tales of Vesperia

As a Genre:

Tales of Vesperia

Anything anyone else says is a lie.

What the fuck? Neither of those are JRPG's....

Look folks, JRPG's aren't "RPG's made by Japanese devs" - it's a genre.
Denotatively it refers to where a game was made. Connotatively it can mean either where a game was made or the style of game. Hence why the question frequently leads to intricate discussions with no answers.

So please, for the love of god, don't continue this argument.

I welcome it.

Actually it's a pretty arbitrary term that's useful to discussion when used descriptively and an affront to everybody's intelligence when used prescriptively.

Edit: See: The gaming world's use of the word "hardcore"

Way better than I was led to believe.
My choice as well.

Honorable mentions go to Lost Odyssey/Blue Dragon.

Pretty sure the OP is talking about traditional jRPGs, so Valkyria Chronicles (SRPG), and Demon's Souls (ARPG) shouldn't apply, even though they are great.

I usually would've included Folklore in the second paragraph as well, but I realised that that's actually an Action-Adventure and not an ARPG, so it has no place in this.
