What's your favorite old school punk band?

Impossible to pick a favorite. I love Sham 69, Adicts, Misfits, Bad Brains, DK. So many others. I also love bands like Descendents and Jawbreaker, but I think they're a bit late to be called "old school."

edit: I'm adding Fear and Naked Raygun to my list. (thanks for reminding me, swoon)

Jawbreaker maybe, but Milo Goes To College came out in '82, that's definitely pretty old school.

But that was the modern/second wave of punk. Not sure what it should be called.

They're like... 5th wave. Punk rock revival, maybe?

Oh fuck, really? Yeah, I guess they count, then. Still one of the best live bands out there.

edit: Damn, they've been around since '77. I didn't discover them until '91 or so.

Misfits and Ramones.

Serious question: What is it about The Clash that makes people love them? I've tried listening to them a few times, but from what I can remember all I heard of them reminded me more of boring, mediocre reggae than the punk frenzy of things like Ramones, Misfits, Bad Religion etc.

OT, but damian from fucked up's podcast "turned out a punk" is pretty great. basically interviews people of ages about their time in the punk rock scene even if they aren't currently in hardcore. it's very candian focused, but still great picture of how hard it was to be be punk outside of major cities, before internet, and not knowing anyone who liked punk rock.

The Clash made reggae acceptable in punk, as well as other crossing-of-genres.

Oh shit, this is gonna be cool. Thanks!

Bad Religion, X, Social Distortion. Punk was never my favorite thing, but the cali bands in general always were more pleasing to me than other acts out there.

Bad Religion, but there are dozens I enjoy. First punk album I remember hearing was by Dead Kennedys.

I was sent home from school in third grade for singing Holiday in Cambodia, and Kill the Poor :p

Misfits and Ramones.

The Clash were eclectic, so if you want to listen their punk songs you have to limit at the ’76-’78 period.

“I’m so bored with the USA”, “White riot”, “Protex blue” or “Janie Jones” are far from boring reggae.

i love the clash but they're not my idea of a definitive punk band by any means

joe strummer was in a silly pub rock band until they played with the sex pistols

Hmmm. I see. I don't mind reggae, but I don't really like it mixed with punk except when NOFX does it just for shits n' giggles. I will give their older stuff a try :)

Everyone was in a silly band until they listened the Pistols/Ramones :P

The Damned, Buzzcocks, Undertones, Adverts, Slits, SLF, Sham 69.... list goes on.

Both my parents were into punk music from the 70's-80's and as a result I grew up listen to alot, and Ska.

Dead Kennedys
Minor Threat
Conflict
All of the bands called Subhumans

I was more in to contemporary stuff though, or at least contemporary for the mid 90s.

Since when the hell is Sublime a punk band? Actually, there are a lot of bands being listed I'd take issue with being classified as either A. Punk or B. old school

My picks:
Big Boys
Naked Raygun
Husker Du

Aren't these lists really just post your favorite music threads disguised with rules in hopes of limiting the answers to what we want?

People have already mentioned all of the ones I would mention except Cock Sparrer.

Really GAF, no Cock Sparrer love?

I saw them play last year and was unfamiliar with them. They were great, but I haven't listened to enough of their music to put them up with my faves.
