What's your favorite Super Mario Bros game?

Interesting. I could see an argument for that but the full title is, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Its just a name, would you count Kirby Avalanche as a Kirby game?
The goal of Yoshi island is not to go from A to B anymore, but its to collect 5 Flowers, 20 Red coins and not get hit. Its more of a Collectathon than anything else. No time limit, no rush. Take your time, solve the puzzle and finish the level.
Same for Yoshi Story, and Yoshi Island DS.

And the Wario Land games are about collecting the more money possible while doing the level.

NSMB because it's the one I have played in the past 20 years and I don't remember all that much about the other ones I have played. Super Mario Sunshine doesn't count because no "Bros." And I didn't like that one, anyway.

1- New Super Mario Bros Wii
2- Super Mario Bros 3
3- Super Mario World

Favorite 3D one is Super Mario Galaxy 2.

I didn't play New Super Mario Bros U yet though. And Yoshi Island would be up there if the subject was about platformers in general. No, here again I have to tell it, it's not a Mario game. It's a Yoshi game with Mario World brand tacked on in order to favorise sales!

It is in fact a Super Mario Brother game. Its simply that the 3D ones have changed the formula but they still count in my opinion.
Super Mario Bros 1 ,2 JAP, 2, 3 , World, 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, Galaxy 2, NSMB, NSMBW, NSMB2, NSMBU, Super Mario Land, Super Mario Land 2, Super Mario Land 3DS

I dont think I missed one.

What did Yoshi have before Yoshi's Island? Just the tetris type games right? Or was there an earlier platformer I'm not aware of?

One of the reasons I consider Yoshi's Island to be a Mario game is because it's a prequel. I haven't played Yoshi's Story on the 64 since elementary school so I can't remember if it had anything to do with Super Mario World.

Like I said, I can see the argument for Yoshi's Island being outside of traditional Mario games it but I'll always consider it a Mario game mainly because I was like 10 when it came out and it was the new Mario game for me.

However, at the end of that day none of this really matters.

I've never been a huge fan of Super Mario World, or SMB3. I played them both as a kid (with SMB3 on the All Stars package), but I never really got it.

The games never really clicked with me the way Yoshi's Island did, and I always thought Mario games were a bit of an overrated mess... until I played Super Mario Galaxy 2 which is probably my favorite game of all time.

Yea but Galaxy doesn't have Bros nor does Mario 64.

I love Sunshine and it boggles my mind that most people dislike it. I love the setting, great use of colors, Del Fino plaza was fun to explore, and it also has an excellent soundtrack.

Plus, a lot of the best platforming levels in Galaxy were very reminiscent of the special levels in Sunshine where Shadow Mario removed your F.L.U.D.D.

I was 11 when it came out, and my hype for it began as "omg SMW2!" hype, but when I played it I realized it was a totally different, unique game, and I loved it all the more.

Super Mario World - my favorite platformer of all time. Perfect controls, tons of secrets (and secrets-within-secrets!), levels have tons of variety from puzzle solving, to platforming, to dodging enemies.

My favorite 3D game is, believe it or not, 3D Land. I really liked the much smaller, more linear levels and the mishmash of stage designs. It trims all the excess that I felt the other 3D Marios suffered from, and actually has a few really challenging parts in it.

Actually that's the western title. The title in its native country is Super Mario: Yoshi['s] Island. So it's still definitely a "Super Mario" game, but not a "Super Mario BROS." game. Just like how Super Mario 64 through SM Galaxy 2 aren't "Super Mario BROS." games based on a technicality. But are we counting that level of semantics or not?

This is difficult since I've since I've found brilliance in most Mario's with the exception of NSMB DS.

I would have to say its a 3 way tie between Mario 3, World, and the original Galaxy.

  1. Super Mario Galaxy
  2. Super Mario Galaxy 2
  3. Super Mario World
  4. New Super Mario Bros. U
  5. Super Mario 3D Land
  6. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
  7. Super Mario Bros. 3
  8. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
  9. Super Mario 64
  10. Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
  11. Super Mario Bros.
  12. New Super Mario Bros. 2
  13. Super Mario Bros. 2
  14. New Super Mario Bros.
  15. Super Mario Land
Haven't played Sunshine. Don't know if Yoshi's Island counts, but it'd be #3 or 4 if so. List can change depending on time of day.

I can not even choose.

SMB3 is the most thoroughly refined, I think.

SMW is something of a comfort game - it's easy to pick up and play. This probably makes it my favorite because that's a huge thing I look for in games.

Yoshi's Island fills me with a sense of childlike wonder every time I play the game. Something no game in this series (or many others) matched until

[i]oh my god guys this game has no business being this good

For as long as I can remember Super Mario World was my favorite Mario game. However I've just finished Super Mario 3D Land for the second time and I'm starting to wonder if maybe a new king is to be crowned. I'll have to let it sink in a little longer though...

Super Mario 64. I still remember the first time I watched Mario fly in 3D.

The DS port was fantastic, too.

I really liked the DS port, even if the d-pad was a bit tough to get used to and camera control was a bit obnoxious. Still, playable Wario and Yoshi in the same game as Mario and Luigi? Pretty cool, even if they were only used in a couple levels.

The improved graphics were very much appreciated too.

Don't hate me GAF, but while I feel that SMB3 is the superior game, Super Mario World is my favorite 2D SMB. What with the secret levels, world map, four different Yoshis and so on. I love that game, yo.

But Super Mario Sunshine is my favorite 2D game. Galaxy and World are better, no doubt, but I love the atmosphere in SMS, and running around in shades and a Hawaian Shirt.

Super Mario World is mine. I enjoy a number of Mario Bros. Games a lot, but I have the best memories of flying down to my cousin's house and playing World (along with Street Fighter II).

SMW is magical. The secret levels have unmatched atmosphere IMO. One of my favorite examples I did in Paint:

For me it is definitely Super Mario World. It could just be a matter of timing, but I haven't played and re-played any other Mario game like I played World. I loved the stages, the look, and the design of the over-world with its multiple routes and secrets.

I could never fully get into the New Super Mario Bros. games simple because they lacked that same overworld design.

Super Mario World.

Awesome Music, Gorgeous graphics (for the time), Yoshi, best bosses and best world map.

Hasn't aged one bit, either.

I think you'll like NSMBU. It's not the exact same, but it's more fleshed out than I thought it would be.

It's connected in a far more SMW way than I thought it would be when we were first seeing people pan over the overworld. I love it. NSMBU could end up being my favourite 2D considering the design, world map and co-op.

Yeah, exactly. I didn't think it would be much more than a lame gimmick from screens and videos, but the amount of routes is insane. In fact my only real complaint is that it doesn't seem as "cohesive" as SMW's, which was so because it was set of islands. NSMBU is the standard SMB3 arrangement of worlds all mashed all together.

Finding
the roller coaster from World 4 to World 6
touched my inner child, in a good way. Younger me would have been jumping up and down on the bed for that. And there's several others almost like that, too.

That is amazing. The secret stuff in SMW blows my mind to this day. For years I'd see Torpedo Ted in the credits and wonder where he was, then I found out you can descend the lower bridge into the lake.

BLEW MY MIND.

I've been playing this franchise since the first SMB hit shelves on the glorious NES.

And I pick Galaxy. It's so good, in fact, that I'm depressed at the thought that nothing could top it.

And no, Galaxy 2 didn't. It actually lost a good deal of the magic.

I love basically all the games in the Mario series, and many of them are all bunched very close to the top of my overall favorite games list, but:

I don't care if it's not a "real" Mario game, or how different it may be or whatever, but, it is an absolutely fabulous game, and I love it.

(Yeah, that's the All-Stars version in those pictures, and that would be my favorite version of it as well).

If by "lost magic" you mean got rid of everything that made Galaxy a chore, then yep, Galaxy 2 lost a lot of magic.

I didn't discover that until a good 5 years after I had first beat the game. I was floored I had missed something for so long.

What hurt most was how obvious it was! I mean, there's a Star Road right there in the lake! How could I not know that there was a level there? Granted getting to that level was insidious.

Also Blue Yoshi is the most broken power up in any 2D Mario.
