When did Ricky Gervais get so obnoxious?

God that cover..

When will athiesm move on from attacking/mocking Christianity and organized religion, and start having actual informed and logical debates about the existence of a god/higher power in this universe.

Such sweeping generalizations. Most Atheists I know are just silent about their lack of religion and don't bring it up. I, for one, generally don't have anything wrong with Christians or most other religions.

That said, Ricky Gervais is fucking embarrassing. Get off your high horse. Nobody cares that you don't believe in a higher power bro.

I'm a bit more worried about Abrahamic theism in this regard... There's far more of them and they've got a storied history of doing far worse than 'mocking' the 'other'.

One is ingrained into the power structure of many countries and actively fights against progress solely at the urging of their faith. The other is a vastly outnumbered minority with a handful of vocal, relatively impolite, notable public figures.

Pretty sure people have been having those debates since like, forever.

Not in my experience. The debate seems to always revolve around God as defined by the bible.

I know there are many wanting and willing to have thoughtful conversations, but the vast majority I've dealt with only seem interested mocking and belittling organized religion. Which I understand, but that's such an easy fucking battle to win.

Once the conversation is moved to the mysteries of human consciousness, string theory, DNA, the universe etc. they have nothing meaningful to add.

Again this is just from my own experiences.

I have no problem with him.

It seems Americans are more offended of the "atheist" angle than Europeans where atheism instead is the default setting nowadays.

There's this great conversation between Jerry Seinfeld, Louis CK, Chis Rock and Gervais talking about comedy that gives some insight into his personality. Which is to say, he's quite full of himself and overthinks everything to the point of being tedious.

Definitely recommended viewing for fans of comedy in general, as well:

If an atheist is in a god debate they are put up against someone from the major religions that account for 99% of religious people on the planet. Have to start somewhere.

Gervais boasting on Twitter recently about the "rave reviews" his new David Brent movie has been getting hasn't done much to improve my opinion of the man either.

Yes but there are also a great many that havent ruled out the possibility of a higher power who aren't, by any stretch of the definition, religious.

It's as if a liberal were debating a moderate, but all the liberal ever referenced are stupid things Sarah Palin said lol

"now he does this"

Cover of 2011.

To be fair he's saying the exact same stuff five years later. Easy to get confused.

- Great comedian.
- A prick that I'd hate to spend any one-on-one time with.

So you're arguing that these tweets are somehow a bad message?
Did you read what that poster replied to? I think you're seeing what you want to see.

I think that's exactly what people find annoying about the atheist angle in general.

It's not an edgy, new or interesting point of view, so trying to sell it as some sort of rule-breaking rebellious behavior usually just comes across as obnoxious.

Gervais has always been a bit of a twat.

As is James Corden, another insufferable arsehole riding the current wave of Britomania in America.

Nothing quite like a magazine cover he posed for five years ago to start a great discussion about the kinds of things he does nowadays.

This pretty much. Nobody even talks about being an atheist around here. I didnt even know its a thing people get annoyed with overseas if it wasnt dor GAF.

I mean...

Ricky Gervais and David Brent are essentially the same people. All his characters are always the same, which is basically him. That's the long-running joke isn't it?

--

But is the David Brent movie bad? I've wanted to watch it.

That is one edgy magazine cover. Usually people like him were always like that but they knew to hide it until they built enough fame before they could begin leaking their more unrefined characteristics.

The interview with Garry Shandling (RIP) remains one of my all time favourite comedy moments. Garry just broke him. It was beautiful.

Watching the body language of these guys towards Ricky is also pretty telling.

Lol

He always was, I could never stand the guy despite The Office and Extras.
Just like Bill Maher, I generally agree with him on most things, but I hate how both of them present their opinions. If a left-wing liberal atheist like me wants to punch them in the face really hard, I can only imagine how other people must feel.

Atheism started having actual informed and logical debates about the existence of a god/higher power in this universe for several centuries now.

As others have noted, that's an old magazine.

But, I do get the impression he's become more of a cock over time. I remember reading an editorial on how his facebook/twitter/website promotes only his content, he's never given a nod to his 'friends/collaborators' when they may have needed it (ie. Merchant with Hello Ladies/Karl Dilkington with Moaning of Life/Jonathan Ross when he left the bbc) which paints him as little more than a shameless self promoter, using people to his advantage and dumping them when he's expended that relationship. Which, let's face it, is a dick move on his part.

And dude, we get it. You don't believe in God. Nor do I. Give it a rest.

But, we'll always have The Office. And to a lesser extent, Extras.

HE can get a bit annoying at times, I agree. But I've been following him on Facebook and his career in general for the longest time and he still makes me laugh way more than anything else.
