When did you figured out your favorite genres?

Jrpg. Final fantasy 4 and chrono trigger were the two stepping stones that led me to the genre. Just the scale of chrono trigger and characters in both games were exceptional. This was coming off streets of rage and sonic which were great games but not much for an actual story. I don't count Pokemon as an introduction because Pokemon is a genre itself to me.

From pretty much day 1 (10 years old or so) I somehow determined JRPGs were my genre. That was all I played until the 360 era when the well dried up, and I instead started playing everything popular, much of which I didn't like. However, the exposure to new things really blew up my notions of my own taste, and since then my gaming tastes are extremely broad. The only genre I can think of that I don't enjoy is horror, and I've even tried a couple of those in the last few years.

As a kid I mostly played racers, platformers and sports games. Turok got me started on FPS and I didn’t seriously try RPGs until Morrowind in my mid teens. Now RPGs are my favorite genre.

Adventure games, specifically ones with a detailed world or often relatively small maps that get fleshed out are the most rewarding for me.

It's probably a stretch to consider all of these "adventure games" but my favourites are games like, Psychonauts, Deadly Premonition, Yakuza.

Other games from different genres still capture this feeling. I always enjoyed Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, Clock Tower/Haunting Ground, RE and other horror franchises. I'm pretty sure they provide a similar sense of discovery in a intimate location.

Yakuza is the best genre.

They've changed multiple times as I've gotten older. My favorite games will always be my favorite games but I rarely play JRPGs or sports games like I did when I was younger.

Now I'm much more in to narrative focused experiences or stealth games. Writing and characters have become almost the most important thing about games for me now and I didn't care about this for probably the first 20 years I played games.

Just about 3 years ago

Went from "I hate RPGS," to playing Fire Emblem Awakening, Xenoblade Chronicles, and Bravely Default in quick succession. Changed my opinion real fast.

"I love Mario but...what's an Arr Pee Gee?"

Beat me to it. lol I didn't know what an RPG was either, but damn was this game amazing.

FF4 for RPGs... I did think Dragon Warrior was cool but I didn't own it and found it confusing as a young kid. Couple years later though, I tried FF2(4) on SNES though, and it was a game changer. 'Woah... this has a story, it's really interesting... and wow leveling is cool it feels like I'm building toward something or gaining something.' After that, Elder Scrolls Daggerfall and Shadowrun (Sega Genesis), then... Anarchy Online/Dark Age of Camelot (summer 2001) basically sealed the deal for open world RPGs and non-linear RPG exploration/leveling.

Strategy I guess was first Romance of the Three Kingdoms 2 (SNES) but it was really Warcraft 2, Ogre Battle, and Knights & Merchants that first got me into strategy via real time tactics/base building, then XCOM and Syndicate Wars adding a more management/tactics to my interests, Tactics Ogre and FFT for tactics RPGs, and finally Romance of the Three Kingdoms 4 on PSX that got me into grand strategy. Coincidentally, those 4-5 years or so as a teenager are why I ended up in economics TBH.

Then... I guess Metal Gear Solid and Tenchu for action or third-person. I was never a big action, adventure, or platformer fan. I mean, I loved and fully completed Super Mario World on SNES because who didn't, and Yoshi's Island... and there was one Contra on Sega Genesis that was bad ass. but in general I don't really like platformers, run and gun shooters, or most action or adventure games in general. Then MGS and Tenchu came along with the 3D action infiltration and everything changed for me.

Lastly, I guess it was Unreal Tournament and Medal of Honor AA that made me fall in love with MP and SP FPS, respectively. They were coincidentally my first real FPS games in general on my first 'good' PC with top graphics, surround sound, and high frame rate haha -- what a game changer that was. First time I played UT at max frame rate with surround sound was as big of a deal to me as playing my first RPG or playing Super Mario 64 for the first time. It was like, holy shit, this action let me catch me breath.

Those first 3 though are basically why my main 'regular' sort of trinity of gaming is basically MGS V and GTA V, supported by games like Tropico 5 and XCOM, and FF XII or Witcher 3. And then dabble in some FPS basically because I need a couple months of something that reminds of Unreal Tournament, MOHAA, or Enemy Territories: Wolfenstein.

Pretty much the only genre i dont really play is sports games, and thats only because there are so many other games i could be playing. But i think above all i like games with a good story and unique gameplay
