When GAF and real life collide. 5000th post edition.

I'm happy to say that my girlfriend has not only come to enjoy browsing GAF, but that she is a member (and really unhappy about her junior status).

Otherwise, I try to keep GAF out of the rest of my life. If I ever saw someone browsing GAF at school I would probably stay as far away from that person as possible.

I'm pretty awesome so even if I say any internet meme in real life and no one understands I'd just say:"Just forget about it" and people would forget about it and love me anyway.

Wow at the people who feel ashamed and embarrassed for browsing GAF. Must have limited views if you think this board is bad. There are far worse out there and I'm not talking about /b/ and the chans. I know quite a few people who post on GAF offline and it's just another public message board to us. However, I still wouldn't want to meet more people from GAF i don't know too well. Not looking to get molested again.

Cue silence. Everyone at the table is looking at me. It's like a scene in an old Western film where the piano player in the bar suddenly stops playing and everyone stops and stares.

To be fair, I think that has a pretty good chance of happening if someone said "lol" out loud or mentioned any other Internet meme in a public place that was filled with people not familiar with Internet culture.

But yeah, they don't mix. :lol Except for maybe the really obviously self-explanatory stuff, like "FAIL" or "owned."

I think this place is okay. I just make sure not to browse any of somewhat questionable threads in public (like the photoshop ones and whatnot). This place is nowhere near the shitstorm that is 4chan and the like, and that's a big reason why I like it.

I've learned over time who I can talk to about this place and who I probably shouldn't. Most people I've lived with just know it as "That Forum I Visit", but it helps sometimes to have at least that level of familiarity when discussing things that were posted here.

nobody of my friends posts on neogaf. and i think it's good that way.
they know that i'm interested in video games but that's about it. they don't need to know everything about my life on the web :lol

One friend of mine has heard of this forum, though, and he called it a "watered down 4chan" or something like that.

I think by "Watered down" he meant "without retardation".

For some reason I chuckle when people refer to it as NeoGAF. :lol I really don't know why but it's just GAF for me and whenever I talk to friends or family about it I just say GAF.

I brought up GAF once or twice in conversations, it didn't go anywhere. I stopped bringing it up. GAF is what I'd call a closed system, with the occasional reference to it in other internets.

My girlfriend is the one who introduced me to Gaf, so I can always talk to her about it.

Not so much anyone else though. I just have to say "this forum" I talk on.

For me it's not shame, it's a recognition that none of my friends would get it. A few of my friends know that I'm on GAF 24/7 and know what it is, but just don't get it.

My wife actually likes the site, though :lol

After showing her the LOST thread she was hooked.

It's always so awkward when someone excited sends you a link or calls you over to watch a video and it's some extremely old ass shit that is totally off the hook for them.

"DUDE! Try and solve this maze game. There are tips on how you win if you turn up your speakers..."
yea i know the feeling. Last year around this time my friends were just catching on to rick rolling, they thought it was hilarious doing the cell phone rick roll.

Some people around me still don't even know what a "forum" refers to. I have to make sure I call it a message board. :lol

You only wanted to brag about having 5000 posts, admit it.

I usually show my gf the fun side of GAF (cats, hilarious avatars, photoshops etc.), so she doesn't mind talking about it. She was even pissed at duckroll the last time he banned me because, and I quote, "that's a retarded reason to ban someone". :lol

Trying to explain GAF to some of your not-so-internet-savvy friends in a social setting is pretty stupid, though.

Its not GAFs problem you dont know how to explain yourself in public :P

A simple "oh some shit from some forum" would do
pretty much. :p

Most nights I usually say to my girlfriend "I'm jumping on NeoGAF for a bit".

I'd previously made it clear exactly what NeoGAF is, otherwise I might be wrongly accused of something...

Oh. My. God.

I just clicked the first link. How did I miss that thread? I'm wiping tears out of my eyes here! The alarm clock just about killed me!
The most telling thing in that thread is that fistful is rocking an HP PC. That just about throws any successful-person conspiracies out the window.

You talk about GAF to your family and friends?

I will be going to King's College London (at Guy's Campus) in September 2009 and Raist will be working at Guy's Hospital.

We'll be within close proximity.

I'LL TRACK YOU DOWN, KID

On topic, you know there's something wrong when people act like it's shameful to be on an internet VG (and other) forum.

Not in real life. I tend to separate my real-life from online life.

But many of GAF's often-used meme and games have actually spread to other online boards (ie. Pedobear, "I know the Japanese and this is unforgivable" bitter tears speech, omegle). There have been times, however, when other boards' posters don't understand about certain meme and I have to explain things to them.

GAF stole all those memes from 4chan.

RJNavarrete mom: Lolz, he is creepy.Hope he get a tag. Goddamn.

Happens every day. :D

Anyway he starts whining about her again and I said, without even realising it, "More Girl Age." Cue silence. Everyone at the table is looking at me. It's like a scene in an old Western film where the piano player in the bar suddenly stops playing and everyone stops and stares.
:lol

Some of my friends know what NeoGAF is. The one's who I've introduced it to usually think it's a comedy forum though, where people post funny pictures. I'll be sitting around with my laptop near my friend and she'd go "Oh, go to NeoGAF and open some funny pictures!". Usually because their only exposure to it is when I've showed them some funny memes.

Fuck, yes. A group of my friends just yesterday were showing me the videos/gifs of the little baby putting it's finger on his chin ("orly baby") and laughing hysterically at it since it was the first time he saw it.

Better not have said anything bad about me to your wife behind my back.

GAF in real life discussions is a normal occurrence for me... over the years I've managed to convert nearly 100% of my close friends into GAF-lurkers!

Im the only one in my group of friends who is a regular gamer and knows all the internet stuff way before them. I wish I had more friends.

Ditto. I am also the only one that plays games often, the others play games some online, some off and the only one I one I play on live with our game prefers do not exactly overlap much.

Most of the time when I am lurking on gaf its in class >.> or if at home they know it as a site I fool around on. Gaf do help me stay up to date on current events though.:D
