When is it time to pull the plug on failing hardware?

The Vita can live on as a high priced PS4 accessory and an indie game darling. It's not a big piece of Sony's bottom line, and they can afford to keep it around as a tiny but profitable business for the rest of it's run.

The Wii U, on the other hand...

Yes. Seems like the Vita has pretty steady indie game sales and a core that buys almost everything.

So you're saying the Vita can live on tacking on $250+ to the PS4 basically doing what the Wii U does natively. That doesn't make any sense.

When the company looses to much money and when retailers say it's time to pack it up. This is probably a stealth WiiU/Vita thread but I don't think you should worry about it. WiiU will at less do GameCube numbers with the Nintendo games coming. Sony is most likely making a small profit on vita and it takes up little to no retail space. Even PSPs will probably be on shelves for a couple more years.

Vita will probably be the same price as the wiiu gamepad in a little over a year from now :lol

Is the Wii U Gamepad also a standalone handheld that is receiving ports of a boatload of great indie titles? No. Is the Wii U a tiny piece of Nintendo's overall business? No. So, no, that's not what I'm saying.

I'd probably team up with another prominent Japanese hardware manufacturer.

Very, very unlikely to happen. It would be awesome to have Zelda or a Metroid game running on PS4 hardware. Think of what Nintendo is capable of doing with that power.

would not be shocked if the WiiU successor hasn't already been moved forward at least 2 years. 2015 Nintendo will have a new platform imo,

Obviously when some dudes on GAF say so. Are ya listenin', Sony, MS and Ninty??? We want to see vita, wii u and xbone blood now. The future is PS4 with 3DS crossplay functionality

Nothing. They've yet to fully tap the current platform.

Remember that Nintendo is in an entirely different position now than Sega was during the Dreamcast days. They're fresh off the most financially successful hardware generation (console plus handheld) in their history. Sega was... not.

Vita is getting plenty of indie support now and it isn't doing it any favors. The Wii U, going forward, will not just be getting ports/multiplats of indie titles but plenty of it's own as well. A Vita with a worthwhile memory card is damn near the price of a Wii U.

Whether Vita ultimately matters more to Sony than the Wii U to Nintendo or not (it doesn't) doesn't matter. The Vita is in no better position than the Wii U, even with it's significantly lower standards.
