When is the adaptation better than the source material?

Sorry Carl, book was a bit boring.

The_Fellowship_Of_The_Ring.jpg

Cut out boring first half of the book

Harry_Potter_and_the_Order_of_the_Phoenix_poster.jpg

Cut down on the amount of angst that plagued 80% of the book.

Nodame Cantabile
Pretty much becasue the subject matter being classical music, both the anime and the live action show did better than the manga source which could not have the music.

Live action also deservs extra credit for the most accurate portrayal of a famous German conductor in film. An old Japanese guy dressed like a pimp.

Drive, Children of Men, No Country for Old Men, Social Network, Batman: Year One, High Fidelity.

What's the source material for The Prestige? Had no idea it was an adaptation

Worth reading at all, even if it's not as good as the movie? I loved the movie.

If you loved The Prestige, yeah.

When is not an adaptation, but a work in of its own doing things that can only be done in its medium. And the author is more talented in this medium than the creator of the original in its own. Or when the original is less than 10 pages like the Polar Express

Yes and No.

and had people blame Dr.Manhatten instead. Much more elegant way to tie things up.
What's not better is that the 'badguy' is not nearly as charismatic.
I love the movie.

I wouldn't say Game of Thrones is better than the books, but I do feel like the TV show benefits from only having 10 episodes per season. The books can be a bit...long winded.

You hit the nail on the head there, Man.

I love the movie.

I think they went from a visually stupid ending, to a logically stupid ending. World peace is to be achieved by America's defense paperboy going on a rampage? War would still start.

Agree, and I think it makes a good point of comparison with Watchmen. Scott Pilgrim's movie is much better movie that what Scott Pilgrim is as a comic book. In the other hand, even if Watchmen's movie is not bad compared to Scott Pilgrim or compared to the original material, the graphic novel is beyond the realm of 99% other comic books, so it is much better comic book (compared to what exists) than what its movies is compared to other movies.

This. So much this it hurts. The first book, while a fun quick read, is mediocre at best. I never got the second, and I heard the third was downright awful.

I made the mistake of watching Game of Thrones on TV first. Now I'm making my way through the books. I'm not sure I agree that the TV show is better, but they are at least about on par with each other. Both are very solid.

No fucking way. Ellie learning about her father and doing experimental theology at the end of the book was SSSSSOOOOOOOOOO much better than that shitty out-of-place shoe-horned in love story.

Contact deserves to be redone . . . as a TV mini-series so it can go into some better depth. I don't hate the Contact movie . . . it is OK. But it drops some of best of the book and inserts some crap that must have been required by the movie studio.

Fight Club is probably the best example.

Yeah, Fight Club and Blade Runner are great examples. And source materials are also very good in their own right but those movies just really came together and worked.

The Prestige definitely, was really hoping for an elongated version of the story/telling and characters from the film but it was a bit of a let down, i wouldn't recommend it unless you really want to check it out

I'd say maybe The Dreamers, never read the proper original The Holy Innocents but they basically rereleased it to coincide with the film with minor edits i believe, as The Dreamers, love Adair's book but i think Bertolucci nails it

Maybe Into The Wild if thats a fair comparison, never read the book but if its just a factual account then obviously the film really helps bring that story to life

Yep. I agree. Mainly because of the performances and the glut of little details. It's a film I can appreciate just for those two things, let alone it being an adaption.

I disagree. There were a lot of character interaction that was lost in the translation. it makes me wish scott pilgrim the animation would have happened.
