When people say, "you look tired".

Just saw a coworker tell the other that she looked tired. You could tell she was annoyed.

I hear people say this shit all the time. I feel like it's a pretty rude thing to say. Basically telling someone they look like shit, which I've overheard people tell others as well.

What do you all think of this?

Does anyone here actually tell people this? Do you get told that you're tired? What do you think of it? lol

Don't tell anybody outside of your good friends that they look tired, especially coworkers.

Conversely, don't say "You look great today!". Because that means they look like shit every other day.

She was probably annoyed because she didn't get enough sleep.

I know when I don't get enough sleep I get grumpy.

"Really because you look like how I feel".

Then just walk away. Let them decide how to take that.

I used to do this, guilty. my wife set me straight. I always meant it as a sympathetic/empathetic gesture. I was wrong.

I've had people tell me this at work before, I just laugh along with them after I acknowledge it and maybe tell them why I might be tired. Never gave it a second thought until now.

People get way too offended at small stuff like this these days.

when people tell me I look like shit at work I usually feel like shit.
that just tells me I need to not overdo it that day.

I have naturally occurring dark circles/bags under my eyes due to my Indian genetics, and people always think I haven't had any sleep or am high all the time. Really goddamned annoying and no way to deal with it. :(

There was one time at my old job where one of my co-workers had on some formal looking clothing when normally she (like everyone) wears casual. I told her she looked nice today. She was happy and said thank you. I probably should have left it at that cause afterwards, I asked "is there a reason for that?".

Maybe it doesn't sound as bad the way I described it, but saying it out loud it made it sound like I was insulting her. She had this shocked look on her face while my other co-worker sitting right next to her was laughing her ass off. Henceforth we became enemies.

Good times.

Someone told me I looked really mad the other day when I was just zoning out with a neutral expression. I mean, whatever. Literally the first time I've heard that.

Tell women this at your own peril
"You look exhausted. I mean frumpy. I mean fat! Oh god stop looking at me..."

Sometimes a motherfucker looks tired, man. If I say this to someone it's usually followed up with "did you get enough sleep last night?" It's usually in the eyes.

I've told that to friends when they look like they're about to literally pass out if they don't get some sleep. Like "whatever you're doing right now isn't as important as taking a nap, please I'm concerned for your wellbeing"

It's a shorthand, but I eventually say the rest of it so dunno :p

I never get asked that question, btw, because I almost never feel tired out and about. I'm usually on full blast living my life!!!!

Red and/or puffy eyes, dark circles, sallow or dull skin, and facial inflammation are signs of exhaustion.

A face wash, BHA exfoliant, sunscreen and some coffee will take care of all of them.

I guess but as the OP said it's deflating to hear. I think people use it often to get under other's skin.

I guess. I don't feel like people do it for that reason tho

A couple months ago I told my boss she looks terrible and asked if she was sick. Turns out one of her friends had died in a car accident. I felt rly bad about that

Sounds like someone needs to dump their SO and hit the gym.

In all seriousness, if the person that says that is a work buddy I see nothing wrong with it. They are actually saying you look tired. i.e. baggy and glossy eyes.

I say it to people I know well enough. That way I have some license and can genuinely tell a difference from how they normally look.

In other words, just have some tact.

It's a polite way of saying u look like shit

It's basically telling someone that they look ugly.

you guy are crazy. you look tired is you look tired. you're asking about the well being of a co-worker or friend. there's no ulterior motive.

It's not something polite to say, unless you're a concerned close friend or something, but I don't take offense if people say it to me. I just don't say it to others unless I literally see them nodding off. Even then I wouldn't say "you look tired", I'd say something more benign like "wake up sleepy" or "hey grandpa, try and pay attention to the road please".

People usually:

1) know they look tired because they ARE tired and don't really need to be told when there's not an offer of relief attached or;

2) aren't tired and all they hear is "you look like shit". So like, thanks so much for that comment. :(

When a co-worker has said that to me, they've usually followed it up with, "Are you ok?"

I usually see it as a conversation opening for them to see if everything is ok at home or if I need any help with work.

'Its because of all the sex I'm having with the wife!'

*and smile*

Works like a charm, disarms the other person completely and they laugh with you, whilst you laugh at them.

Of course change it to your own preference.

When people tell me I'm tired

It's cause I am

You do longass graveyard shifts and NOT look like you're about to fall apart.

I mean, if someone says I look tired I basically go "no shit" because I always look tired. I need like 9 hours of sleep to feel normal. I almost never get that.

So it doesn't bother me.

I have a genetic deficiency that affects the thickness of my skin around my eyes, making me appear permanently tired. If you say this to me I will fucking smack you

Yea, if a friend or family member said it, I think that's fine.

I've wondering about this, especially when women do it to each other haha.

and lol at that Bourne gif. The funny thing is, she doesn't look tired!
