When people say, "you look tired".

I always get this.

You look tired.
You look high.

I have neutral face and my voice is monotone. I also don't really show emotions or expressions that much, so it's really hard to judge me if you don't really know me. My demeanor is also easy going. It does get annoying at times. People will always ask me if I'm ok and all that shit. Once people get to know me, they realize that's just me.

It did bother me when I was younger, but now I don't care. I get it so much that I've gotten use to it.

I can understand why that could be interpreted as insulting, but it can also be humanizing, too.

In many places of work, you're expected to be on your A game all the time. Acknowledging that someone appears worn down can be empathetic. It can demonstrate understanding that we have lives outside of work, too.

Yeah. It shows a level of concern. Be happy that people even give a shit. If I don't give a fuck about you, then you won't hear a single word from me. I've never really taken, "you look tired" as a negative. I appreciate it, if anything.

If someone tells me I look tired it's because I am. I have two kids under three, I can't remember the last time I had a full night's sleep. I don't get get offended by the truth.

Surprised people get irritated by such a comment. When I'm asked the same shit I just say, "Yes". That's it.

It's not about getting irritated as much as its what's the point of saying it all? What kind of conversation do you expect to get out it? haha

Yea, but some people don't even look/act tired when people comment on it. Or like others have said, some have permanent eye bags or it's just how their face is.

I feel like it's more humanizing saying it to a friend or a family member as you have an established relationship with them, but to a coworker? I feel like they lack social awareness by saying it.

This is on the level of "bless your heart" to me. Its idiomatic function is separate from the words being used and I have to be mindful of what I'm saying if someone I know genuinely looks tired.

I don't give a fuck about looking tired. I probably am. And anybody who wants to criticize my appearance can fuck themselves over a cliff too. "You look like shit" might reach me and actually let me know they are concerned.

Basically, don't be polite with me haha.

Sometimes people look tired. Sometimes a thing said is just a thing that was said..

It doesn't bother me, but mostly because I'm actually feeling exhausted when people say it...

Right? What person who doesn't work all week not look tired sometimes? lol..It happens.

What annoys me more is when people tell me. "you look like you just woke up." It fucks with my head and makes me feel like shit.

I've told that to friends when they look like they're about to literally pass out if they don't get some sleep. Like "whatever you're doing right now isn't as important as taking a nap, please I'm concerned for your wellbeing"

It's a shorthand, but I eventually say the rest of it so dunno :p

I never get asked that question, btw, because I almost never feel tired out and about. I'm usually on full blast living my life!!!!

How's that cocaine bill?

What's the tone when people say that to you? When people have said that to me, I interpret it as gentle ribbing.

I dunno, maybe they think you didn't shower, you smell, and are angling to get you fired.

Take a shower stinky. You look tired.

I hate when i get told to smile or something along those lines. Im not much of a smiler if im walking around busy at work, why should i smile to make someone happy. Its so rude.

If I'm obviously tired and my coworkers comment on it it feels nice to know that they understand I'm not at my best and are cutting me some slack.

If I'm not tired and someone says it, it makes me feel self conscious as all hell.

I'm weird I guess.

This drives me up a fucking wall. Unfortunately, when you're a girl working in the service industry there's a huge swath of older men who like to end their order with "and a smile!" I give them decaf.

I have bad sleeping habits so I do look tired a lot of the time. I generally assume that they're concerned, or at least trying to show a polite level of concern. Never struck me as rude to be honest.

Is this something only women get? I've seen it mentioned on GAF more than once but I've never heard it before.

Na, im a male and i some times get it. It hasnt happened for quite a while but i remembee my ex girlfriends mother saying it to me a couple of times and old bosses.

I said it to my gf today, cause she looked tired. She only had 4 hours of sleep.

Then she probably felt fucking tired, and didn't need anybody to tell her so.

The point is that nobody needs to be told what they already know and understand. Even if it's coming from a place of concern, nobody wants to hear that they look like shit.

Like, would you go up to an overweight person and tell them that they look kinda porky?

Well she's usually peppy so I was wondering if she was tired, not meant as something spiteful. And she didn't look like shit, just a little tired.

Same. If I don't like you I just don't talk to you or waste my attention on you. If I bother saying stuff to you outside of what is mandatory for work related things then It means I care.

Yeah, that's how I interpret it too. It's a sign of concern and/or empathy.

Bahaha, wish I had thought of this when I was young barista...

I was waiting to cross the street in NYC once and a random dude walked up to me and said "you're the most tired-looking person I've ever seen."

I just laughed.

Honestly, if you get angry because you're being told this from a particular person that's ok, but if it bothers you when anyone says this to you I think you have personal issues.

i dont get the people saying it means something else. Usually i say it when my coworkers look like they havent slept or slept well.

this kinda shit is why Ten will never be my favorite Doctor

Harriet was fucking right

But Midnight though.
