Honestly, I think at this point trying to push any character newer than the SMB1 up to that level is just going to feel awkward, regardless of their level of popularity.
But popularity is all these characters have going for them

They're just mascots. Mario has no depth, but no one is saying he's a "gary stu" or whatever because he's the hero in every game.

I really do not like the use of the idea of "Mary Sue" and "Gary Stu" being thrown around so much anymore.
Its like every other character that is popular or seems too good to be true is immediately labeled as such. Even when they're not.

It's baffling. Mario characters don't have enough character to qualify for those labels. There's no single criticism that can be levied at Rosalina that can't be at Peach or Mario, or any other Mario character.

Rosalina comes across as a Mary Sue. "Oh but she is so wise and motherly and has super cosmic powers!" At least she had an interesting backstory which showed some character, too bad that whenever she physically appears in the series it is as the most stoic Mario character ever and nothing like the storybook.

Peach has a lot more going for her in that respect. She's had a ton of history with the series which has developed her as a naive airhead always stumbling into trouble to the detriment of those around her. The RPGs in particular make her a very fun character to have around. As far as Daisy is concerned, being a hotheaded tomboy is at least something that sets her apart from the other two.

I think this is a large part of where the hang-up occurs between those that like Rosalina and those that don't. Longstanding characters like Mario, Luigi, and Peach have had a few decades-worth of games, in varying genres, being depicted in slightly different ways to help round out and familiarize people with the character. The RPGs in particular understandably further this a lot.

Rosalina, for all the hand-wringing about "awww they're shoehorning her into everything!" hasn't actually appeared in that many games, and a lot of those instances don't exactly afford her much opportunity to develop and show off her character. She's shown to be very powerful in the two Mario Galaxy games and is given fairly prominent standing, but outside of that what's she appeared in? Super Mario 3D World as an unlockable, where there was no real story to speak of and no chance for any of the characters to show off; a few Mario Kart games which are loaded with Mario-universe characters from all over; now Smash Bros, where she was included as a rep for the more modern "era" of Mario and was probably picked for the unique moveset with her and the Luma as much as anything. We'll have to wait and see before we know what sort of expressions she'll demonstrate in that game.

If anything, the complaints about Rosalina only serve to show that, considering her backstory, a game more focused around her could do a hell of a lot to show more breadth to her personality. I don't personally believe at the moment that she'll ever really step out much farther than Daisy has as being a Mario party-game side character, but the possibilities intrigue me.

Shit this single screenshot make me want to play it again.
On topic, if a Rosalina game was to happen, I can't imagine a platforming game, it's a bit strange in SM3DW, she doesn't look acrobatic at all with her long dress.
Some kind of flying game like Nights could work.

How does it feel forced though? What would be "natural" progression for the character's exposure?

Because its not the character they like most.

" hey why is gamfreak puttinng lucario everywhere it feels so forced "
"You mean one of the most popular pokemon in existance? Its because people like [inset character here ] more than whatever character you like. "

should have been captain toad x rosalina combo pack

the story is wario x waluigi steal the lumas for cash and rosalina goes and gets them

do it Iwata

I. I don't personally believe at the moment that she'll ever really step out much farther than Daisy has as being a Mario party-game side character, but the possibilities intrigue me.

Smash bros and Mario 3d world prove that has already happened.

The only Mario character with any real sort of multifaceted personality is Luigi if you combine the RPG games, Mansion, etc.

Peach, Mario, Daisy, etc are no more a character than Rosalina is.

I mean that due to her being treated as an "idealized" character instead of as an author insert. Basically Rosalina is treated as being "perfect" and lacking in any interesting character traits.

It took Peach and Luigi years to develop their character traits, Rosalina however hasn't appeared in many games.

Rosalina will eventually grow and evolve.

Mushroom Kingdom Hearts it is then.

I would so love that.

Rosalina's fanbase kind of baffles me

She has a lot of fans because Nintendo blatantly designed her to be sexy with that stupid hairdo.

Nobody likes admitting that, though, so we have a bunch of people telling us they like her non-existent personality.

Uh she's the newest "human" space thing in the Mario universe. Galaxy was a hit a huge hit for Nintendo, one of the most critically acclaimed game that had wayc more rosalina screentime than peach in any mainline Mario game.it also helps that unlike daisy ... She cute and iconic looking IMO :P

What the hell are you even talking about?

She is popular because she is very good take on a very popular modern character archetype

the fact people find her sexy is also baffling to me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So you've never played a Wario title.
So you've never played a Yoshi title.
How can you say that and put the RPGs in consideration when Bowser has more characterization than Luigi?

Nintendo has never really designed any of their Mario characters to be sexy, thank the gods.

Some form of adventure/platformer revolving around Lumas I could see being a thing. The notion that having her in a game would be odd/awkward/annoying because character X didnt get one is odd. I mean, her getting her own game wouldnt preclude the others not getting their own game or that they ever would to begin with. Rosalina: Luma's vs Star Kids :P

Nothing wrong liking a characters design(whether its just because you find her pretty) then wanting a game after it. The notion this is somehow wrong is weird.

Pretty much.

The RPGs especially have been good to Bowser, because they not only gave him the best lines, but they do the most to make him the single most complex character in the entire Mario pantheon. And yet, he still doesn't have a solo role, but that's another story.

Conversely, what little bit of extra character development Luigi finally got in M&L: Dream Team was met with much resistance from Nintendo. If that's what AlphaDream had to go through for that game, I can only wonder IntSys may have had to go through for what tidibts Luigi got in the Paper series.

What about Yoshi? He was introduced in World and shortly after starred in several games of his own and made the usual rounds in Kart, Party, Sports and even Smash. Think about it, Yoshi was around for about the same amount of time that Rosalina currently has and he made it into Smash before Peach and Bowser.

Or how about Wario? A character who was introduced in a side Mario title as a boss who in 2 years got his own spin off series, starred alongside bomberman in a game and was the star of another title along with Toad. I wonder if back then people would've said "all he is is a fat Mario he has no personality or gameplay mechanics to justify his own series and now hes being shoved down our throats."

what kind of game will it be? platformer? shooter? gta sandbox?

will waluigi be to rosalina as peach is to mario?

Nah, it'll be Metal Mario x Rosalina. A metal, soulless robot who wonders what it's like to be human is in love with the princess far, far removed from humanity with Lumas as her only companionship for countless years.
Both cold, both distant but in different ways. It's so very poignant.

Until Pink Gold Peach moves into the space castle on her anti-gravity motorcycle and we get some wacky Three's Company-esque hijinks.

Also, if we're talking about Super Mario Galaxy spinoffs, I would probably rather have Super Wario Galaxy. Everything you loved about Super Mario Galaxy, but with Wario and Waluigi breaking the game mechanics, defying the laws of physics and otherwise just cheating their way through it.

Even if that was the case, that fans of her finds her sexy and likes her design, and wants a game... Why is that wrong?

Additionally she really isnt is she made interesting with substantial character depth like characters in other game genres. But yet the tone from Some people make her out to be this intrinsically interesting character. The only identifiable aspects seem to be that she is both generically attractive and seems approachable for "waifu" fans. Maybe I'm missing something from later in the galaxy games?

You don't need to look at "later" games. Due to the storybook sequences in Galaxy 1, Rosalina is basically the only character in the main Mario games built up like the ones from the RPGs, with a big backstory. Some people dislike her serious personality, but I don't see how it's problematic when the alternatives for female characters are two princesses often portrayed as airheads (and initially people thought that she wouldn't be used outside of Galaxy due to that personality, especially with most spin off games initially ignoring her, but then she got to appear in Mario Kart Wii).

There also haven't been any big characters introduced after her in the main platformer games in the same way, only one shot bosses or other similar characters without big presence. That kind of thing helps making her stand out and keep relevancy too. Look at the other characters mentioned in this topic, they're all old recurring characters of the series, many of them who are basically restricted to spin offs. There isn't any other new character to really compete with her for attention.

Rosalina character action with Daisy as her Vergil. Waluigi is the love interest/damsel and secret unlockable. Big bad is Toadsworth.

But if they make a Rosalina game... Why would that be awkward or "pushed"? I mean, do you think people would really feel awkward because Rosalina got a game 1st? Seems like a stretch.

Mario Kart 8 is her game. Everyone and their mother plays as Rosalina. Pink Gold Peach is the co-protagonist. No but really, it's not happening.

On the other hand, that's what I though about Toad getting his own game.

She's not like peach at all

And judging by your previous comments you don't seem to be in the business of even listening to other peoples comments so why even bother.

What post of mine are you referring to, exactly?

And the only reason I ask this is because I really want to see you explain why she's remarkably different than Peach.
