When will this gens blockbuster new IPs appear?

Personally I don't care too much if a game is a new or old IP so long as it's a good game, but so far this gen we have mainly had our big releases as sequels or reboots, and I'm curious if this is going to be a feature of this generation.

Thinking back to last gen I know it wasn't until a year or two in that the big new IPs appeared, like Uncharted and Gears and CoD, but just wondering if you guys think that we will have equally huge new franchises this generation or if we will likely see new IPs as more niche titles and the big blockbusters being new entries to existing series?

Not anytime soon I think.
If we are lucky, then this E3 will announce some new ip, and I hope they are multiplat and not exclusives.

Why make new blockbusters when you already have a dozen of them with guaranteed sales from last gen fanbases?

Introducing a new IP is super risky. Games like Watchdogs and Lords of the Fallen, among others, probably scared publishers to sink lots of money into new IP that doesn't sell.

2016.

No Man's Sky
The Last Guardian
Re-Core
RIME
Scalebound
Quantum Break
The Witness
Unravel
...

Just on the top of my head.

There's already been some big third party games like Destiny, but looking at first party, 2016 seems like an amazing year for both consoles.

Hard to say, but we've had a few valiant efforts - Titanfall, Destiny, Watch_Dogs now Battlefront. None have really caught on wildly like the series you listed.

Seems like most developers and buyers are playing it safe, honestly. The big names are going to be around for a while, honestly.

Not sure if you just mean high sales when you talk about blockbusters but I'd say Bloodborne and Sunset Overdrive would qualify.

Bloodborne and Until Dawn were 2 excellent new IPs.

Blockbuster? Debatable but it was popular enough to earn good amount of fans. Blockbuster doesn't happen in a flash for most games except FPS type.

Horizon: Zero Dawn or Quantum Break have the potential. Agree there hasn't been an equivalent of Gears of War, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed yet. Destiny is probably the closest thing to it but not on the same standard IMO.

Destiny and Watch Dogs sold really well, Titanfall and Driveclub did pretty well too I believe and Bloodborne is very succesful for a more hardcore title, even though it's more of a niche genre (but selling over 2 million in less than a year is hardly niche and it will probably get a sequel). And let's not forget how well Splatoon did for Nintendo. That will certainly become a franchise.

Lots of new IP next year, like The Division, For Honor, Quantum Break, Scalebound and Horizon. We'll see if any of those will kickstart a franchise.

Naughty Dog has the capacity to hit big with a new IP as The Last of Us proved. I hope we get their sci-fi game this gen. :)

Are these really blockbusters apart from maybe TLG and Quantum Break?
TBH I don't think any of them are block busters. I think of something like Fallout as a Blockbuster, and there is no way these games are going to come close.

All on last gen.

They were still all new IPs that came along with the new generation. The fact that they were also on older generation consoles should have been even more reason for them to attract an audience (well Destiny did I suppose).

It's too late, we had our chance to make this into a blockbuster but we blew it

This gen is doomed to mediocrity now :(

There are upcoming big new IPs, the problem is I don't think there'll be any "game-changing" new IP during this gen. We've reached a point where we just can't evolve genres.

Destiny and Watch_Dogs are prime examples. They both sold great as new IPs and will definitely get sequels. Having had last gen ports doesn't really keep them from qualifying either as the next installments will undoubtedly be current gen only, and they are heavily associated with current gen.

Fallout has been a PC game for multiple gens though. So what's the sense of comparing that to today?

In general, i think publishers are very safe these days , and we won't have anywhere near the kinds of new or offshoot IP's cultivated even last gen.

A lot of those games were apart of the AAA boom that no longer exists. Its just a fact that less devs are making big games, and so there are less big games to come out.

Oh. Blockbusters. What's a blockbuster? A game with tons of advertising. The games I listed are all quite ambitious and unique nonetheless.

We absolutely can, but when hundreds of millions are on the line, big risks are a tough sell. There are still changes going on, for better or worse though, they just come in increments.

Feel like The Division could be a contender. Ubi backing, has a big multiplayer component, lots of guns to shoot.

Overwatch maybe?

Destiny and Watch Dogs for the already released obviouslyt.

Aye. That's more important to me. Games like Scalebound, For Honor, The Last Guardian, Splatoon and others will pretty fresh. Blockbuster or not.

And yeah, Overwatch will probably be a big hit.

Quantum Break

Just on the top of my head.

OP mentions CoD and Uncharted and you respond with Unravel, The Witness and NMS? Not that those are bad games but calling them blockbuster games is a bit much, don't you think? I think we're talking AC and such.

Titanfall. I know GAF likes to downplay it, but once Titanfall 2 comes out on X1 and PS4 everyone will see it as the new big IP it is.

I would love most of these to turn into blockbusters, but I think only 2 or maybe 3 will.Last Guardian and QB with possibly Scalebound depending how it turns out

Guerrilla are already referring to Horizon as a franchise so that will probably be one of the big new IP's of this generation, especially if it's good (which it has a high chance of being).

Everything is a franchise these days.

I think Titanfall 2 will be huge, and it will be without the stigma the first game had from being a weapon in the console war.

Elsewhere, next year we have:

Horizon (if it doesn't slip to 2017)
Quantum Theory
Scalebound (will certainly be a critical darling even if it doesn't sell tons, a la most Platinum games)
Dreams ('Blockbuster' might be overselling it a bit, but it might sell as much as the original LittleBigPlanet)
Overwatch

Probably some other big 2016 I've forgotten.

Destiny is the only one so far I think. Titanfall 2 will probably be pretty huge. Bloodborne if you consider that a new ip is great. I hope we see another Rocket League and Life Is Strange type game. Those have mass appeal potential.

I would say Destiny. Despite being on last gen it was introduced during the current generation and has become huge.

Why? :P Guerrilla's track record is pretty bad.

I know this sounds cynical, but I doubt that we will get any new blockbuster IPs this gen on the level of an Assassin's Creed or Mass Effect.

Edit: Crap, forgot Destiny
