When will this gens blockbuster new IPs appear?

Everything is a franchise these days.
That's true I guess but regardless it will be one of this gen's "blockbuster new IP's" the OP is referring to.
Why? :P Guerrilla's track record is pretty bad.

I know this sounds cynical, but I doubt that we will get any new blockbuster IPs this gen on the level of an Assassin's Creed or Mass Effect.

Edit: Crap, forgot Destiny
It's being written by John Gonzalez (the writer of New Vegas which is known for its story) so at least the story will most likely be better than the Killzone games'.

There are some odd definitions of blockbuster in this thread. Even No Man's Sky is a bit of a stretch given the team size (although it is probably going to sell very well).

They were still all new IPs that came along with the new generation. The fact that they were also on older generation consoles should have been even more reason for them to attract an audience (well Destiny did I suppose).

Right, they were crossgen new ips, not current gen new ips, which is what this thread is about.

They would not have been economically viable without the previous generation of hardware too. The crossgen requirement necessitated that their design could not be build on tech which would be incompatible with the 10 year old hardware.

I loved Shadow Warrior but at this point it just sounds like you're saying random games you're looking forward to.

Right I'm definitely looking forward to them but I think they have potential to be big series like Shadow Warrior could be like a Saints Row and World of FF could be like Kingdom Hearts type of big franchise.

Good rule of thumb: If it's got a "2" in the name, or "Final Fantasy", it's probably not a new ip.

Titanfall should've been one, but the first game was handled poorly. (lack of content at launch, console exclusive) I don't much care for it personally, but I can't deny that the sequel(s) have the potential to be huge.

It's crossgen, but I'd say Destiny is a bonafide blockbuster.

As others have said, Horizon Zero Dawn. Also Scalebound looks super fun too. But I think Horizon will be bigger.

I'd call World of Final Fantasy a new ip. Maybe a spinoff? I don't know or care really. As for Shadow Warrior yes but it's like Red Dead Revolver and then Red Dead Redemption. Nobody really cared until RDR. Or original overhead view GTA. It was a good game but it didn't go blockbuster until GTA III.

There is obviously Destiny. Watch Dogs, Ryse, The Order and Knack were attempts that didn't quite reach it.

I feel Horizon and Quantum Break hold a lot of potential on this regard. Quantic Dream's next game may also be a huge hit, I think it is hard to tell. The concept is appealing, it looks ace and interactive film-type of games are becoming a well accepted genre with a healthy market. I expected Until Dawn to bomb horrifically but even that one did really well. If the next QD does well critically I can see it becoming a blockbuster title.

The Titanfall series may also reach blockbuster status in the future as well. I feel like EA is going for that one after Battlefront, to have two major blockbuster scifi MP shooters.

Hard to say, but we've had a few valiant efforts - Titanfall, Destiny, Watch_Dogs now Battlefront. None have really caught on wildly like the series you listed.

Seems like most developers and buyers are playing it safe, honestly. The big names are going to be around for a while, honestly.

Destiny and WD has sold just as much as UC or gears .

I had another think, and I guess Dying Light qualifies. It is a new ip, even if it's heritage is fairly obvious. It was planned for the previous consoles, mind, they just cancelled those plans.

I think Project Cars probably falls short of the definition of "Blockbuster", but that's a subjective matter.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor probably qualifies.

I think The Lord of The Rings predates this game, and there is a version of this game for PS3/Xbox 360.

OP is specifically discussing games which are not sequels, reboots, spin-offs, adaptations from other mediums. Also specifically for games which are not available for the previous generation of consoles.

Titanfall is the safest bet. Respawn are crazy talented and have hired a lot of new staff since the first. This should hopefully help them create a more content rich product.

Quantic Dream I would have laughed off but they do have a new writer on this one so I remain hopeful. Quantum Break and Horizon are unknown but both look nice and Horizon seems to have great potential, but it is Guerrilla so again who knows.

Personally I don't care too much if a game is a new or old IP so long as it's a good game, but so far this gen we have mainly had our big releases as sequels or reboots, and I'm curious if this is going to be a feature of this generation.

Thinking back to last gen I know it wasn't until a year or two in that the big new IPs appeared, like Uncharted and Gears and CoD, but just wondering if you guys think that we will have equally huge new franchises this generation or if we will likely see new IPs as more niche titles and the big blockbusters being new entries to existing series?

I think the bolded part is what we're going to see most often but i do expect a few more big budget new IPs before this gen ends.

Personally though i'm just happy that new IPs that belong between mid-tier and blockbuster are still being made (like Bloodborne and the upcoming Ni-Oh) and i believe we will see a lot more of those.

It's still an original story with original character and original mechanics that weren't there in the previous gen versions.

You also added the "no spin-offs, adaptations from other mediums." part yourself as I don't see it in the OP.

Well the OP said new IPs (Intellectual properties) and Lord of The Rings definitely doesn't fall into that category.

Splatoon is basically new multi-generation Nintendo franchise in making, and that's something. Its tremendous success on Wii U, especially in Japan, and its "core gamer" focus secure the sequel on new, probably more popular hardware.

For comparison, all first-party franchises born on Wii and Nintendo DS either flopped in new generation without the way to recover (Wii Sports, Brain Age/Brain Training) or just haven't crossed the gap (Endless Ocean, Hotel Dusk, Another Code, Art Style).

Next year as games like Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, Overwatch and assuming Titanfall 2 gets announced for next year that.

Also we have Quantum Break (though being Xbox One I don't see it doing stupid amount of sales).

I know a lot of people hate on Destiny, and some of that is justified, but Destiny is by all objective measures a new IP and a blockbuster. It's huge. More than 20 million registered accounts. Although it is also on last gen consoles, Destiny came out this gen. I am unaware of another new IP that is anywhere in the same neighborhood player base or sales wise.

I don't see the OP discounting cross-gen games anywhere. Destiny is very heavily slanted toward PS4/XB1.

2016.

No Man's Sky
The Last Guardian
Re-Core
RIME
Scalebound
Quantum Break
The Witness
Unravel
...

Just on the top of my head.

Great list of games, but I don't see any of these becoming new huge AAA franchises like Gears of War or Uncharted. Some of these are smaller indies, and TLG is practically part of a franchise already. Scalebound is Platinum, and QB is Remedy, meaning they rarely release games, and I think Alan Wake 2 comes before QB2.

Still a great year, though, not complaining.

i'm not sure there will be any outbreak HUGE blockbusters that are analogous to COD, Wii Sports or AssCreed

maybe destiny, but in a different way with retention to player base being a more consistent thing then selling a bulk load of copies; I don't think there's clear evidence for the latter

Introducing a new IP is super risky. Games like Watchdogs and Lords of the Fallen, among others, probably scared publishers to sink lots of money into new IP that doesn't sell.

Didn't Warch Dogs sell really well, despite the reviews?

Yes, Watch Dogs was a phenomenal success despite most of Gaf seeming to dislike it, and its sequel will probably be even more popular now it is established.

EA UFC is a new IP that's already getting a sequel. Are all sports games blockbusters? Also Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm!

This gen is an extension of the previous gen. There are no games released so far this gen that have made the same impact Bioshock, Gears of War, and Mass Effect did. We're just 2 years in though, maybe we could see more next year or in 2017. I doubt it.

I think the Division and Wildlands have the potential to become a franchise.

I'm sure Titanfall will grow with the sequel and Destiny is huge so...

Witcher isn't a new IP but its the game that's set CDPR up as a top tier developer and made the series mainstream. I'd say it's has as much impact this gen as ME did last

One sold a ton and the other was made for 3 Euros at a tiny Eastern European developer and sold enough to earn a sequel

I hope there are less AAAAA blockbuster IPs and more Bloodborne type projects that cater to specific audiences and don't need to sell 10 million to be profitable.

I keep thinking about that.

One of the reasons last gen was so great was because of the many new franchises that started.

Gears
Mass Effect
Uncharted
Red Dead
(Kind of) Call of Duty
Portal
Dead Space
BioShock
Batman
Assassins Creed
Last of us

Of the top of my head..

The only new "blockbuster" I can think of is Destiny.

All on last gen.

Call of Duty also began on the PS2 though. It's not unfair to consider Destiny and Titanfall current gen blockbusters, and Watch Dogs is also worth watching because Assassin's Creed started fairly underwhelmingly for most gamers as well. It was the sequel that really delivered on the franchise potential... before being annualized to hell.

Pretty sure Horizon will make some big waves, and even though they're a good two or three years away yet there's a brand new Bioware IP from their core team, and Cyberpunk 2077 to look forward to.
