Reality shows everywhere and I am sick of it
Weather channel - reality shows
History channel - reality shows
Etc
Etc

These crappy shows are sickening

The only good nowadays on tv is AMC - that is the only redeeming aspect of this dark age of television

Well first of all, that's completely wrong.

Having said that, reality TV will never go away. Our long national nightmare will never end.

I'm waiting for the show about Evilore's daily life.

Never. It's too cheap to produce. It doesn't matter if you don't get a tenth of the viewership of a well produced show if it cost you less than a tenth of a regular show.

High ratings, extremely cheap to produce, don't have to really pay for writers (high quality ones, anyway) and the "actors" are nobodies so they will get paid accordingly.

Really don't see it going away simply because of their profit margins.

For me, reality TV stopped as soon as I stopped paying any attention to it.

Surprisingly, it worked great!

when it stops being good business. it's cheap and reliable investment.

idk why people complain in a netflix and recorded tv world. there's probably tons of good shows that you want to watch and haven't, watch them instead of mindlessly browsing. chances are the reality tv shows are financing the risks the companies make on the drama or orginal comedy you enjoy.

Who cares? You are still getting good shows.

Are we? I literally can't remember anything that's caught my interest as being worth watching in, well, years. Breaking Bad is the only thing I can think of that's airing that's pretty good, or at least the first couple of seasons are. I stopped keeping track after that.

I think once people realize that the newer shows are actually staged to the point where it becomes unwatchable.

I met with someone who does contract work for the towing show and the storage show. He said that it's all set-up at this point. He says that he doesn't know of any legitimate shows; though, he admitted that he's never worked with the big networks.

Game of Thrones
Sherlock
Adventure Time
Legend of Korra

is pretty much all I watch throughout the year

I think people know but they don't care. They just enjoy the fun/stupid/non-sense drama and the ability to look superior compared to those idiots.

It won't. Cheap to produce and people watch. There's no reason to STOP making them really.

Bingo. You think people actually assume the real housewives are real? Or that the Jersey Shore crew are really walking up and down the shore freely like they were a couple years ago? When reality tv is scripted it just becomes another form of fiction. Why would people stop watching? It's still entertaining.

How are people still so pissed at reality TV when it's been around for so long now?

Reality TV's a huge genre too. Should a really solid show like Shark Tank go away just because Jersey Shore is shitty? Pretending every reality TV show sucks just because there are a lot of bad ones is surprisingly close-minded (again since they've been around so long now). It's like saying "when is this comedy television epidemic going to go away" just because stuff like Whitney and Two and a Half Men are on.

Godamnit this too. GAF is on fire today.
In this thread anyway

Reality TV's a huge genre, too. You've got competition shows like Survivor and Amazing Race, talent shows like X Factor, skill-based shows like Top Shot, etc. - the Kardashian stuff is it's own thing as far as I'm concerned. I mean, any genre that can produce a show like The Mole is pretty great. Just ignore the crap and give the quality stuff a chance.

Edit: also can I point out that AMC's got a reality show now as well

there are so many good tv shows in now / recent history... You'll definitely be able to find some quality TV on HBO, AMC, Showtime and FX.

The past several years/decade has had so much good tv it's ridiculous. If you're complaining about the state of TV now you might as well just cancel your cable. The past decade has been a golden age for television.

Reality tv is obnoxious though and I wish it would go away. Maybe once every 3-4 years something worthwhile comes out of it that I enjoy for a couple weeks and then burn out on (Kitchen Nightmares, Shark Tank), but they're so cheap to make that they'll probably be around for a very long time.

Probably never. It's too easy to make money off of. Simply set up a few cameras around whatever the hell you want to film and bam, reality tv. I do find it annoying myself, but whatcha gonna do.

People always tell me this and every time I try to watch some recommended shows I end up bored out of my mind with very, very few exceptions. I kind of just gave up on watching TV to be honest. I disliked everything so much that after we moved I just decided not to keep cable in my room so I really have no idea what I'm missing.

Nothing of value was lost.

So basically, you don't watch a lot of TV.

I'm with you...but here's the thing, those shows get record ratings for their respective networks. I'm sure if the old format would have gotten those types of ratings they would have been more then happy to stick with it.

Seriously! FX has Louie, Always Sunny, Justified and Archer. There is also Sons of Anarchy and Wilfred (I don't follow these but they are decent shows).
HBO is still king even tho they haven't had too many shows for my taste. Boardwalk Empire is only show I'm interested. Can't wait for American Gods.

I used to? I actually I used to watch a ton but I lost interest in the shows airing. So I just stopped since there wasn't anything of any worth to me. Like I said I try again every once in a while to get into something someone recommends but I usually end up really disliking the series.

Seriously hate this garbage TV. I remember when the craze first started, interesting concept. I liked Big Brother and similar shows. But it went from an at least somewhat interesting group of people interacting and living together to shitty celeb wannabes, bright orange women and Pete Burns.

Over and over again.

Most reality TV these days is so incredibly shallow it makes the X factor look classy. A lot of this shite my friends and family still lap up and chit chat about until blue in the face, which annoys me to no end but I've long given up hope any of them will stop watching this bullshit.

As for me I've pretty much given up watching TV altogether. I like Dexter and Breaking Bad and used to watch Mythbusters until it too turned into scripted, fake poo.

We'll all be dead before reality TV, I fear. This shit just doesn't want to die.

Soon as game shows make big come back!

Game shows is another genre that's cheap to produce.

U.K. still has a ton of them. America, not so much outside of the ones that have been on for 30+ years.

The new game shows that have premiered in America this last decade or so have been way too influenced on the reality show craze with over dramatic tones, commercial breaks before the answer is shown, etc. Just not really fun to watch IMO.

That and they have their own network now.

Why does this bother people so much?

Nobody is forcing you to watch shows you don't like.

This doesn't make sense. You realize those shows do exist, right? TV time slots follow the same law as matter, two objects (shows) can't exist in the same time and place. When was the last time you flipped to Discovery and they were actually showing Mythbusters, some sort of special, anything science-based at all, or went past History and it wasn't Pawn Stars or some shit about logging? The precedence of reality shows leaves no room for the shows me, the thread starter, and other people may actually want to watch.

Just because a reality show isn't made doesn't mean a show you like will be.

I just ignore most reality shows. The only one I watch is RuPaul's Drag Race and on occasion I check out The Amazing Race/Survivor. They are cheap to make and they pay for much better programming so as long as my quality TV stays and my television doesn't become littered with 'reality' then I will be happy.
