When you don't know what to play next

I'm been stuck in this predicament for over a month now. I turn on my PS4, look at all my games and can't decide.
In the end I just stay on Gaf all day.
I also have a little backlog, but lately I really want to replay an old game. Of course I don't do that either.

Anyone else having this problem right now?

It's the worst thing OP.

You could try just closing your eyes and flipping through the games and choosing something.

Or just go alphabetically.

Honestly it's still a problem for me.

I do this most the time. Hell the other day had a full day to myself and had every intention of getting some gaming in. Ended up playing some minesweeper on the laptop and spent most the day on GAF.

I just pick a game at random, and usually within 5 minutes I know what I want to play

I suppose it's a good problem to have a backlog and/or be the type to enjoy replaying games. From what I hear some gamers don't ever replay old games.

Post a list of the games OP and let GAF argue over which game you should play first

Sure. I got these in my backlog-
Bloodborne, The Evil Within, Tearaway Unfolded, Rayman Legends, The Wolf Among Us, Alien Isolation, and Shadow Of Mordor.

Actually, if I can be completely honest, I play about an hour of Overwatch almost every day - I love that game but I can't play it that long sometimes.

Not right now but I do it all the time. Well, actually I just beat Doom last night so ... fuck, I'm probably in the same situation now haha.

Yeah I have a similar problem. I just simply do nothing (Usually the case). Or try to dig up a Vita/PS3 game. I've been playing older PS3 titles lately. Working on No More Heroes: Heroes Paradise.

This is a great backlog! Drop Shadow of Mordor, and play any of the others. Bloodborne, Tearaway, Rayman Legends, Alien Isolation and, to a lesser extent, The Evil Within, are all among my favorite games in recent years.

This is me 24/7 for most of my life. I'm just an omnivore gamer and unless a game has just come out I don't stick with it consistently.

I love so many game. I own thousands of games. My backlog is thousands big...

Today I bought Kero Blaster. It's great. I don't know how far I am but it's the 6th level.

I currently consider myself actively playing about 50 games across multiple platforms.

I was literally going to post something like this in 2 or 3 days, I'm exactly where you are. I'm so bored that I may go give FFXIV : A Realm Reborn with my friends for a while. If that sale has nothing of interest on PSN tomorrow, I'm probably spending the month playing that with 7 Days to Die. (Edit) I feel like my friends and everyday go on PSN and end up sitting there begging the same question day by day "What are we gonna play today?" always end up with nothing and saying we're bored. Then the sadness comes when one of them is like "Let me go on the PSN store see what there is to buy" then he realizes he owns everything. It's really sad tbh lol. This summer has sucked for us when it comes to playing stuff cause we're lacking motivation to go back to finish some of our backlog.

Bolded. Man, seriously. Have you given it a go yet?

edit:

This is my close 2nd recommendation as well; great game.
I played about 5 hours of BB before something happened and I played something else instead. I did enjoy it and have been thinking of picking this up again first since I'm sure I'll like it.

I have a quite a different problem. I'm up to date. Right now, I'm progressing through Odin Sphere on Vita, but once it's done, I have no game to start. No backlog at all. I was planning to get Star Ocean 5 but after reading reviews I decided not to. So next on my list are Monster Hunter Generations, Gundam Ex VS, Shiren the Wanderer, Romance of the 13 Kingdoms and 7th Dragon III. All yet to be released games. I guess I have to wait one of them to come out.

Sometimes i get this but usually i will force myself to play a game in my backlog that i usually then end up loving.

Id recommend wolf among us for from your backlog. Amazing story and atmosphere and relatively short compared to the others. But you have a really great backlog with games i enjoy so any should be fine

What are the games you have finished recently?

Sometimes, without meaning to, I find that I have been playing the same type of game (fps, 2d side scroller, 3rd person adventure) in a row which can lead to game fatigue.

So I look for something outside what I have been playing lately to change it up.

From your list, I can say Bloodborne and Rayman: Legends are Both games I have played and would highly recommend.

Usually what helps me when I can't decide is just spend a week or so doing other things and when I start jonesing for video games again it's easy to decide.

Actually just did that and ended up starting the witcher 1 again for a full trilogy play through haha, hopefully I manage to focus enough to beat it this time

I think you just answered your own question, my friend. Go for it, you won't be disappointed. And make sure to pick up the DLC as well.

OP, I have this happen a lot when I don't have "that one game" that I've had marked on my calendar for a while.

Are you Type A or Type B personality? I think people generally fall into those two camps for backlogs and here's how I'd proceed:

  • Type A: you need to work that backlog like a To-Do list. You're the type of person that enjoys seeing progress and that unorganized dumpster fire that is your backlog is not going anywhere.

You need to be decisive and pick one game, play it for at least 3 hours, and then decide if you want to keep playing or move on to a new game. To pick the game, you should ask yourself if you want a short vs. long game, a leisure vs intense game, or if you just want to cross off a game that's been on your backlog for a while.

If after 3 hours you aren't feeling it, consider that game "played", and move on to the next one. As you get older, you have to be OK with playing games and not completing them, so hopefully you realize that at this point.

  • Type B: you're all about finding your rhythm with a game and it's more important that you have a connection with whatever game you're playing. If this is you, then you need to stop thinking of your games as "a backlog", and strictly focus on what game you want to play at this moment.
You may not play half of those games you have, and you should be OK with that.

Be laser focused on the types of games you KNOW that you like - RPG, action, etc - then once you narrow it down to that group, focus on a game that fits that criteria that you haven't tried and are genuinely interested to know how it is. Then when you try that game, play it for at least 3 hours; if you're not enjoying it, then move to the next game.

Lastly...if you've done this and still just aren't feeling it, then walk away and do something outside of games. You will come back in time for a game you've been waiting for.

I'm Type A, and I run into this all the time. I have to be productive with my backlog, but I also need to be OK with playing a game for a few hours and then moving on if it's not my thing.

Bloodborne is the best but it's long, I'd go with The Wolf Among Us first.

I pick three games. Sometimes they have a theme, like they all come from a company, or sometimes they are of a certain genre. And I set a goal.

For instance, I try to clear like three floors in Dark Cloud every time I play it. Or maybe a whole dungeon if the day strikes me so well. But I never make it into a chore, elsewise what's the point of playing?

I just put all my recently bought (and not so recently bought) games into a randomiser and had it pick one for me. So after DOOM I'll at least know what I will be playing next and then I don't have to choose.

But I did just buy Overwatch as well, so all of this might just be pointless.

I absolute fell in love with this game but you know what really bugs me about it? It takes more and more experience to level up and get loot boxes. The first 10 levels were sweet.
I love getting that sweet sweet loot.
The grind isn't so bad compared to other games like it. Getting more xp for consecutive games is something every other game in the genre should do

What are the games you have finished recently?
Mega Man 3 from the Legacy Collection. And while I had fun, it was really hard for me. I assumed I'd be a better gamer by now - nope. I abused save states for sure. I'm not eager to keep going with that game right now.

EDIT:
Actually I take that back, I beat SF5's new story mode. Didn't really care for it. Before that I finished MM3.

  • I'm probably type B. I don't see it as an obligation, this is just a hobby I enjoy.
The thing is that I'm missing out on some great games. I know that. I wanna play them, but not rush through them.

The grind isn't so bad compared to other games like it. Getting more xp for consecutive games is something every other game in the genre should do
I play it til I level up, which by now takes a little over an hour. I'm level 29. It's become my podcast game, which I'm sure some would look down upon because teamwork and communication is very important with this game. I just don't like talking to strangers.
I'm always down for some Overwatch...for about an hour.
    And I'm alright with that.

When I have this problem I go back to some smallish game I already beat, some sports game or GTA V and drive around listening to the music.

Maybe you just aren't in the mood to game and need a break.

Or pick the genre that you're most interested in at that time, and if it doesn't stick, maybe spend a day or two doing other hobbies and get back to it.

You know, I've done this several times and I've fallen in love with great games this way. I won't rule it out.
I'm thinking Bloodborne.

Bloodborne is such a great choice to force yourself to play.

Push yourself through those grueling first few hours where you have to learn the game and might be bored. And at the end of the tunnel you'll find a pretty damn good experience.

I usually play something that's easy to play in short bursts, like Resogun, Driveclub, or Destiny. Sometimes I also return to Bloodborne's dungeons.

Me after Uncharted 4. I have been meaning to start The Witcher 3, but can't muster the energy. So, rational and logical person that I am, I bought Valkyria Chronicles Remastered. Every time I don't know what to play I buy more games. Need to learn some self-control.

That's me right now. Just finished Odin Sphere the past weekend. Was set on playing Zero Time Dilemma, but the whole Amazon thing happened so I don't have it. I have a massive backlog, but nothing really that I feel inclined to go out of my way to start.
