Where Are The Great Dinosaur Games?

Ugh I'm trying to remember this really old dos dinosaur game that I played all the time. All I remember is at the beginning you made a dinosaur from different parts so wings of a pterodactyl, head of a trex and tail of whatever. It was top down and i pretty much forgot the objective.

EDIT: Giantbomb to the rescue! http://www.giantbomb.com/designasaurus-ii/3030-9293/images/

It was Designasaurus II.

Best answer.

YES.

YES YES YES.

I've been saying this for years!

I want a Far Cry sequel set on Isla Nublar. First person driving frantically away from a Tyrannosaurus.

Problem is that people only think of shooting when dinosaurs are involved.

Operation Genesis is the best Dinosaur Game ever.

This!

It got some grief from reviewers at the beginning for being too basic and it's obviously dumbed down for consoles but FUCK, for a gamer who's obsessed with Jurassic Park and has been WAITING for a park simulator game for years, it DID IT.

It's one of those games where HOURS melt away every time I play it, even after years. Plus, modders and the community later found out there is an incredibly large amount of complexity in dinosaur behavior that NO ONE advertised at the beginning. Ways of putting dinosaurs together peacefully, even having a fence-free park with carnivores without anyone getting killed - and not because of bugs, but because of actual behavioral AI scripts.'

Look at me, I'm gushing. I truly love this game.

Oh and great narrator:

"Message from Dr. Grant-"
"Message from Dr. Sattler-"
"Message from Dr. Sattler
*sad voice* "Message from Dr. Sattler"

I GET IT, MY DINOSAURS ARE DYING OF TICKS, FUCK, IT SUCKS I KNOW, BUT RESEARCH INTO THE VACCINE IS TAKING FOREVER...

"Message from the park administrator..."

I KNOW, I'M FIRED, GOD DAMMIT...

Thank God I still have my copy of the game. The modding community associated with it is pretty damn interesting too, albeit not very active, and quite frankly I don't think it even existed until after the game's heydays.

They were really active until recently. There's a massively upgraded mod compilation out now with new textures and such.

They actually look pretty cute on the box art, but they ripped off the Dilo frill from Jurassic Park.

Most of the time the frill is copied.
Most everything people know about Dino's (The masses anyway) comes from JP after all

Right there with you.
Just seems like a perfect fit that no one has done.

Jurassic: The Hunted was a decent budget dino game I thought, nothing special, but serviceable for a couple hours.

I'd love a dino game that mostly focuses on hunting and survival.

Primal Carnage for pc. Online only but gameplay is something else. Very good multiplayer, though i havent played in a while. go on steam and see if you want to buy, but beware that there is not a lot of content other than very good gameplay and great graphics for a small indie dev.

A next gen Primal Rage would be amazing. I imagine fighting games in general are going to look stunning next gen.

Sad/Funny thing is, I believe at least Chris Strange (Godzilla: DAMM, Kaiju Combat kickstarter) has alluded to making a pass at a modern-day Primal Rage revival...but nobody at WB wanted to fund such a game.

I suppose it really will depend on how big of a splash JP4 makes before anybody will be willing to take chance at making a Dinosaur game again. Especially with how much costs are only going to continue rising next-gen.

Primal Carnage definitely is the best recent example, even if it's MP only.
Also I have high hopes for Primal Carnage Genesis since it's SP.

Not technically a game, but Microsoft Dinosaurs was one of the greatest things EVER as a kid. Makes me wish I could somehow play it again.

I was more of a 3D Dinosaur Adventure guy.

Here's one:

Carnivores
An okay hunting game, but with dinosaurs, so it's cool. Not too many different kinds of dinosaurs to hunt (I want to say seven?) but I remember having some fun with it. I wonder if it would even work on my current computer?

I don't know what the heck kind of animal they were trying to pass as an Allosaurus though.

Never played the sequels. The second one apparently has a bunch of new dinosaurs, though the third one was about ice age animals, not dinosaurs.

I swear if I ever get rich this will be the first thing I buy.

The best arcade shooter I have ever played!

Recently played all the way through at a Dave and Busters.
Still holds up great. So much fun especially with a friend.
Never had a chance to try the JP3 arcade game by Konami.
Though it seems most people haven't since I never hear anything about it.

It's kind of shitty, not as fun and the gunplay is slower.

People went so crazy over Zombies and Military shooters that Dinosaurs got left in the dust.

I really wish Dinosaurs would make a comeback, maybe Jurassic Park 4 will help inspire developers?

Is Jurassic Park: The Game just too terrible to be mentioned? I just started episode 1 today. : It is pretty janky.

You are only playing it for the story. If it's not for that reason and that reason alone you will hate it with every ounce of being. It is a game full of QTEs and basic point/scroll and click (whether you're playing PC or console). The frame rate drops actually bugged me on 360 as I figured this had to have been a low intensity CPU game. Still, it can build atmosphere, and the voice acting I thought was pretty decent.

Overall I'm glad I played and bought it...though I'm not that big an achievement whore to go trawl through it a second time.

Chalk another one up for those who think Far Cry 3 is the perfect fit for a dinosaur survival game. I was really hoping for a dinosaur island DLC as well, and it's not completely out of the realm of possibility seeing as the next DLC is going to feature dragons with laser beam eyes.

I bought it on X360 last night, after getting home from JP 3D. I've got to be over half way through the game now. For a JP fan, it has a lot of nice references and fits in with the Isla Nublar plotline in the films pretty well, I thought, and thus is a very satisfying little experience. It has some good tension in many of the scenes. The frame rate stutters a lot, but that doesn't bother me. Motion capture and voice acting is really good, surprisingly. Its similar to to the Sega CD Jurassic Park point-n-click game, except replace point-n-click with Shenmue style QTE's. A lady even asked me to move boxes. Another thing about this game is how it has actual John Williams JP soundtrack music (unlike some older games like the Genesis and Sega CD games which did not feature the soundtrack - why?) and I liked seeing Nedry's "ah-ah-ah, you didn't say the magic word!" (and Nedry's body) incorporated into the story.

Also - I wonder if the Troodons from JP: The Game are what Bakker refers to will be so scary in JP4.

I remember when The Magic Schoolbus had their episode on dinosaurs. They made Troodons the smart bad guys, and I certainly got terrified of them up until Jurassic Park introduced Velociraptors to me, so I could believe Troodons being fully introduced in JP4.

Its sad how little dinosaurs get used because they are such a huge fixation for so many people.

You see the guy solo redoing Trespasser in Cryengine and want to cry because its so freaking awesome but its something one guy wont finish for years if ever

I remember this, it was pretty neat. I seem to recall if you only wounded the dinosaur (which was likely) instead of shooting it dead, you actually had to follow its blood trail to finish the kill.

Can anyone help me remember an old SNES side scrolling dinosaur game? It was based in pre historic times and I think you played a caveman and would fight the dinosaur bosses at end of a stage ?

He's nut to go at it alone. Im sure someone would be willing to help.

I was never able to get to the Dino stage but I really liked the game from what I played.

That quote is pretty funny now.
