Where do you buy your games?

Darkness no more
I typically use Amazon for most of my purchases. If it's a Friday release I will preorder at Gamestop if it's something I really want for the weekend. Sometimes Amazon is late.

Lately a lot of stuff is missing from Amazon (Detriot, RDR2) so I probably need to start shopping elsewhere. Where do you guys buy your games and what places are the best at getting games to you on release day?

For PC, mostly humble, steam during sales and GMG.
For Switch, I buy eshop codes when they're on sale, or I buy gamestop gift cards at a discount and use those to buy eshop credit, and get my games from the eshop.
For PS4, same as with switch, just the PS store instead of the eshop.

EBgames because it close to my house. I know most people have bad experience with Gamestop/EBgames but I had no problems so far.

For PC basically everything is Steam or sites that sell Steam-activated keys.

For consoles - the past few years getting games from Best Buy (with GCU) has been my go-to. If it's something older that I can catch on a decent Free Shipping sale on Gamefly that's usually my backup plan. Obviously waiting for sales is kinda my thing.

But getting games delivered on release day is the reason I've started switching a lot of my purchases to digital. I live about two hours drive from the nearest retail store that sells games, so ordering from anywhere has always been a crap shoot for me. My copy of Detroit just arrived last Thursday (almost a week late) and it's not uncommon for places like Amazon to get delayed several days, if not more, because of their ridiculous insistence on using UPS Sure Post. My copy of Far Cry 5 was nearly two weeks late - and in the meantime I had purchased a digital copy and played it as much as I cared to (when the physical copy arrived, I already had a return label printed and it went right back into the mail box).

Amazon is usually my second choice for new games, but I imagine now that GCU is gone it's only a matter of time before those discounts start drying up there too.

I guess you could say I'm being dragged into digital purchasing on consoles kicking and screaming. :goog_tongue:

Xbox Marketplace... gets you two X1 copies and a PC copy if it's Play Anywhere. 3 copies for the price of one is too good to pass up.

Bestbuy, a thousand times Bestbuy. Gamers club is $30/2years (or was until very recently); 20% off new and $10 preorder certificates. Smash Switch is $48 with a $10 certificate, heck I got Arkham Knight and Deus Ex for $2 each.

I'm crushed the program is ending but thankfully mine is good until 2021; In the 4 years or so I've had it I've saved thousands easily. Gears of War 4 was $48 release day plus a $10 certificate for a future purchase with a free $20 copper mug/coaster set. Amazon Prime is a good second choice for 20% off but Best Buy was that plus preorder $10 bonuses plus points which lead to more certificates.

Edit : Also worth noting anything with a game was included, so Rock Band on release was $200 not $250 for the full set, and Destiny 1's $99 collector edition was $79.

What other answer is there?

I usually stick to brick and mortar shops like EB Games, Best Buy or Walmart. I'll sometimes make exceptions if I'm buying the game as a gift or I don't have any other choice, like buying an expansion to an MMORPG, in which case I buy directly from the publisher's website.

Usually Amazon or Target.

As much as I hang around places like this and keep up with news, I honestly haven't bought many games in the past few months that's not of the smaller, e-Shop variety. Yakuza 6 aside, nothing much has interested me in the pre-E3 lull.

Yeah, Amazon has been screwing up lately. I usually get the preorder Amazon Prime price. I went to Bestbuy for God of War.

Amazon for the prime discount but as soon as my student discount expires I'm dropping it cause price increase. Target if I'm feeling gross.

Best Buy almost always with the GCU, since I have to pass one on my way home from work. I just order-get discount-pick up and play. Plus the reward points add up eventually and save me another 5-10 dollars on top of the GCU price. I think I paid $2.99 for Horizon around christmas. Rarely, I will buy direct from the publisher if there's a good CE that I want.

Digital Download mostly. It feels disgusting and old fashioned that if I want to switch games, I have to remove a disc and insert another disc. Looking at you SONY.

It used to be exclusively Best Buy before the chain killed off GCU. Now I'm going to Target a bit more, with FunkoLand— I mean, GameStop— as another alternative.

For retro stuff, I use eBay and local game shops.

I usually buy from internet stores, but following this year I´ve been leaning more and more towards digital purchases from PS Store. Physical copies just take up so much space and I´m in a process of keeping the materialism to a minimum. I´m also lazy and changing discs is a nuisance.

On PC I purchase from Steam, Humble, or Fanatical. Consoles, always Best Buy thanks to GCU. I guess that will be changing next year when my GCU runs out since they are killing it. I'll probably buy a lot fewer console games unless someone else comes out with a good discount program (that doesn't require the purchase to be a pre-order). I also buy the occasional digital game from the eShop, PSN, or Xbox store if the price is right (or if the game is only available digitally).

I mix it up between digital and EB Games. If there's some sweet deals on PSN I'll buy there, certain Switch games I want on my console I'll buy from the eShop. Anything physical is from EB though just because my local one has some decent people working there.

Amazon is out of the question ever since they dropped the Prime discount on games. I used to not mind waiting over the weekend for $20+ off a new game but now it's pointless. I'm in Canada, btw.

Amazon for all new releases.
eBay & Amazon for retro/imports.
I also buy from digital storefronts. I have a Sony Rewards membership and if I earn enough points from digital purchases I get a PSN gift card.

I did buy a game at GameStop and a local store called Gamers this year. I don't go there often. The 9 PM launches aren't bad, but its such a better feeling when the game arrives in the mail or unlocks. That's one of the many reasons stores went to 9 PM instead of midnight. Playing Bloodborne a few hours before midnight was a good feeling. You also aren't fighting traffic to get the game you want.

I use to drive to different stores, Walmart at 2 AM for games. Now a days it just isn't worth it. I'm usually checking my tracking number for the package to arrive.

Best Buy until my GCU membership ends in two years.
Next January for me and this is my exact answer. Too bad for them, GCU discount on new games got me to exclusively shop from them these past few years, even after Amazon began doing the same discount. Not going to be so after January.

I only buy retail games on consoles dont play with my pc that i only use to compile codes
I buy games on Amazon Gamestop MediaMarkt Saturn and if i can get good prices on Playasia or in SecondHand Stores

Online retailer or local supermarket for new releases and Amazon for stuff if it's too good an offer to turn down.

don't think I've used anything except for PSN and Steam in about 5 years o.0 and even over the last 10 years, maybe physical only a few times... I guess they were usually from Wal-Mart or EBGames just cuz they had physical stores like 5 minutes away.

... but pretty much everything digital marketplaces: only physical games I've bought since Half Life 2 ... MMO collector's editions, mmmm that MGS collection on PS3 ... umm, The Settlers (2007) on PC. oh, I bought a PSP just for FF Tactics and I guess that was physical. same with a PS TV for Tactics Ogre but I think that was digital. Oh, and I got GTA 4 physical somewhere haha. I guess Mass Effect 3 was technically on Origin too not Steam =p

but pretty much 99% of my games since HL2 have been Steam or PSN (granted, I didn't play many console games for most of the PS3 generation so when I entered it a late a lot of them were now digital). but I think every PC game since probably either Warhammer Online or The Settlers both around 2008ish has been on Steam and every PS4 game I have is digital.

i dunno, I treasure my old 16bit cartridges but I hate game discs as much as I hate computer software discs.

Today, I only buy games mainly from Steam.
Sometimes GOG and Humble if the price/deal is better there.

When I was a kid with my PS2, I used to go to these shady "game stores", like a bootleg GameStop that sold a pirated version of games for a very cheap price. I used to buy all my PS2 games from there, I could buy 2-3 games for the price of 1$.

It was like a gamble every time I went there, I could either get a good disc that plays well with no errors, or a bad disc that doesn't work at all.
After I sold my PS2, I discovered steam when I was a teen and never went back to that place ever again.

Steam mostly. GOG whenever I can. Xbox and PSN.

Amazon if I purchase physical, which is rare.

I did it for Civ 6 Collectors, and I might do it for RDR2 since I'll trade it in when it comes out on PC.

Xbox Store. Otherwise Amazon for physical, and also VideoGamePlus once in a while.

If it's a game I know I'll be (re)playing a lot, digital all the way. Chalk this up as first world problems - I can't be arsed to get up and change the disc.

But if it's a game that I know I'll play for a bit and that's it, physical. I know I could sell the games afterwards, but in practice I never do - I just borrow it to my friends. And when buying physical, I always support my local brick-and-mortar store instead of say Gamestop, which exists here as well. Because they're a dying breed.

Wait, GCU is going away after current subs run out?? How did I miss this news.

On PC steam and CD Keys
PS4 the PS store , am 99% digital , However today i Preordered RDR2 Ultimate Edition from Game for the sweet steelcase and Map

I go between EB Games (Canada) and BestBuy, they recently killed off the rewards program at BestBuy and I've always had issues pre-ordering anything from them so I setup Amazon Prime, sorry BestBuy, you shouldnt have killed the rewards program.

3ds games - Best Buy
PS4 games - Playstation Store
Wii games - gamestop/ebay
Everything else - ebay, play-asia

Usually wherever I can get the best deal for a physical copy. For the few digital/PC games I buy, I stick with GoG.
